Presents
Theatre on San Pedro Square29 N. San Pedro Sreet • Downtown San Jose
Welcome / Director’s Note from Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Executive Director
Theatre is more than a show. Tabard.
Last season, we brought you the music of Tin Pan Alley. The 1920s through the 1940s, the heyday of Tin Pan Alley, was truly the era of the great composers. Those years were the prime years for the compositions
of Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Johnny Mercer, Jerome Kern, and so many others who wrote songs that people are still singing today. Songs at that time were most closely associated with the people who wrote them. That began to shift in the 1950s, though, and I think of the ’50s and the ’60s as the golden age of the great singers. It was during this time that the singer became the name and face associated with a particular song, due in great part to the invention of television and the proliferation of musical variety shows that brought these singers into everyone’s living room. I remember going through my parents’ extensive record collection as a young girl and playing the albums of Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Steve and Eydie, Frank Sinatra, Al Martino, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and so many other memorable singers. The music was romantic, the arrangements were gorgeous, and the singers created the perfect melding of melody and lyrics through what seemed liked effortless singing. It was a glorious time for music and singers, and everyone had their favorites. I would like to dedicate this show to my uncle, Pete Rocco, who would have absolutely loved the performances you are about to hear. Uncle Pete’s favorite singer was a fellow Italian, Anthony Dominic Benedetto. You know him better as Tony Bennett...
from Diane Milo, Director
What better way to kick off the New Year than with the fabulous tunes popularized by Tony Bennett! We are thrilled to present I Left My Heart for this special engagement as part of our 12th season: TRUE
Lives: Stories & Songs of Real People. Thank you for being with us. Our designated non-profit for this production is Sacred Heart Community Services for all the work they do for those less fortunate in our community. Through your concession purchases, you partner with us to help Sacred Heart help others. In February we are proud and pleased to present James Creer starring in Looking Over the President’s Shoulder, a remarkable, powerful, humorous and touching TRUE story of one man’s 21-year experience at the White House, a career founded in a passion to sing yet fueled by his commitment to provide for his family. Come back March 2nd and 3rd to experience Nineteen Jazz Ensemble in concert. In April/May, we wrap up our 12th season with another wonderful revue, this time featuring the music made famous by Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland: Babes in Hollywood. These are all terrific opportunities to experience the greatness in the lives and music of those showcased this season. Check out our website (www.tabardtheatre.org) for full information on all of these shows.
