Sandra Joy Friesen (Intermediate Piano)

Pianist Sandra Joy Friesen has developed many musical interests and has acquired a broad range of repertoire, from traditional to contemporary, to interpretation of graphic and pictorial notation, to interdisciplinary collaboration. As a music educator since 1992, Sandra Joy has balanced a career of teaching, performing the full range of solo and chamber repertoire, organizing festivals and concerts, and adjudicating. She has performed as soloist and chamber musician at festivals, conferences and programs in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Austria, England, France, Germany, and Slovenia. Investigating piano techniques, styles and aesthetics from the past century she has dedicated a large part of her career to lecture-recitals, presentations and workshops for music teacher groups and students on learning and teaching new music. After 16 years of professional work in British Columbia (Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Trinity Western University, Chilliwack Academy of Music), she pursued doctoral studies at the University of Alberta, with a goal to develop material for an online resource in the training of unconventional piano techniques and styles. In 2009, her studies in improvisation and free-interpretation with Douglas Finch (London, England) became a turning point in her musical sensitivities, and this practice continues to be a source of inspiration for her artistic development. Also in 2009, she and visual artist Werner Friesen began interdisciplinary performances blending music with live-response painting. They became members of the eXperimental Improv music Ensemble (Alberta) integrating disciplines of music and visual art with composers, dancers, and actors. She completed the Doctor of Music degree as a scholar of the Kule Institute for Advanced Studies, and is grateful for the knowledge and inspiration from all her previous piano teachers: Jacques Després, Jane Coop, Douglas Finch, Jean Broadfoot, Walter Thiessen, Kathy Klassen, Alice Cameron, and master-class teachers: Paul Roberts, Marvin Blickenstaff, Stéphane Lemelin, Bruce Vogt, Catherine Vickers, Marek Jablonski, Richard Goode, and Leon Fleisher. A member of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers Association, the Canadian Music Centre, and the Canadian New Music Network, Sandra Joy continues to be a committed voice for Canadian music, composers, and pedagogy of new piano music.

Friesen’s 2014 recording Sound Reflections, Vol. 1: Off the Shelf (funded by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Edmonton Arts Council) is a project of audio plus video that provides interpretive context and addresses the challenges of various technical aspects. It is available through the Canadian Music Centre. Her discography also includes Garden of Music (solo piano music by Alain Mayrand), which is a beautifully edited volume of music inspired by the poetry of R.L Stevenson with illustrations by Mayrand himself; a two-CD project From the Beginning with flutist Larry Krantz (pedagogy-focused repertoire for flute students); To the Garden the World by Stephen Chatman (a work Friesen commissioned for saxophone and piano, on the album Earth Songs), and Songs My Father Taught Me (Larry Nickel; as pianist for the West Coast Mennonite Chamber Choir). Friesen also holds degrees from the University of British Columbia (Master and Bachelor of Music) and Canadian Mennonite University (Bachelor of Church Music), and is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Piano at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
