SYNOPSIS

In a sleepy corner of post-Troubles Belfast sits Maguire’s Antiques, managed in his brother’s absence by Bostonian JOE MAGUIRE (Brendan Fraser). Joe is in hiding from his insanely jealous ex-wife and her mafia-boss father and is keeping a low profile there, although he has struck up a friendship with the beautiful SOPHIE (Yaya Dacosta), an Ethiopian refugee who works nearby. Joe has noticed someone hanging round the store recently and is worried that his whereabouts might have been discovered. JIMBO (Marty McCann), the young man in question, has no connection with his vengeful in-laws however, but he is interested in another aspect of Joe’s past life – he believes he’s his long-lost father, who had a summer fling with his late mother and then deserted her when she became pregnant. However, his bitterness towards Joe is not the only thing pre-occupying Jimbo – he owes money to local casino owner and hard man, MAD DOG FLYNN (David O’Hara) and if he doesn’t pay him back, Flynn has threatened to take his new-born son from him. Desperate to find a way out of his plight, Jimbo decides to rob the local fish shop Whole Lotta Sole - his pal SOX (Conor MacNeill) has told him that the Friday takings are always high in Catholic areas. But this proves to be disastrously wrong – there’s no money in the safe, just an old brown leather bag, which Jimbo grabs before fleeing. Unfortunately, the bag belongs to Mad Dog Flynn and contains incriminating evidence which his nemesis in the city police force DETECTIVE INSPECTOR WELLER (Colm Meaney), would love to get his hands on. With the law on his heels and pushing his baby son in a pram (the babysitter has let him down), Jimbo dives into the first place of refuge he can find - Maguire’s Antiques. As DI Weller’s police and then the SAS quickly lay siege to the store, Jimbo soon discovers that he’s acquired four unwelcome and unexpected hostages: Maguire himself, his girlfriend Sophie and two impish traveller children – PETIE and PAULIE (Jamie Kierans and James Napier) – who had been hiding in the shop, planning to pocket what they could and escape when the coast was clear. Weller however, is not yet aware of Jimbo’s involvement - having discovered Maguire’s murky mob connections; he comes to the conclusion that the mysterious Yank is both the fish market robber and the hostage-taker. Inside the barricaded store, Sophie is finding out that the new man in her life is not only married to a mobster’s daughter, but is also, as a result of that long-ago summer affair, a father to the increasingly unstable young man who is holding them hostage. When Jimbo tries to take his own life – and the gun jams – Joe finally manages to disarm him and calm

him down. And when he tells them about Mad Dog Flynn and they inspect the contents of the brown leather bag, Joe sees a way out of their predicament. As night falls, Maguire asks for a meeting – and with arms raised, walks out to parlay with Weller who insists that the baby and the children be freed before any deal is done. But as the pram is cautiously being wheeled out of the shop, Petie and Paulie’s mother, the formidable MARY ELLEN (Amanda Horowitz), seizes her chance to burst through the police cordon where Weller’s community police officer son RANDY (Michael Legge) had been looking after her. She races into the Antique store and liberates her two sons, ignoring Jimbo and his machine gun. The ensuing chaos makes everyone extremely jumpy but with Petie, Paulie, the baby and Sophie now safe, negotiations are eventually resumed. Weller agrees to Maguire’s request to give Jimbo and his family immunity from prosecution in return for the evidence that will put Mad Dog Flynn behind bars – and Maguire agrees to take the rap for the Fish Market robbery. But when Weller inspects the bag, he finds nothing in it – without the evidence, the deal is off. Joe races back inside to look for the lost items, while in a room across the street, Mad Dog Flynn, and his gang prime an old rocket launcher, determined to destroy the bag and its incriminating contents - and anyone unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity. The first rocket fires wide but the second goes through the shop window and explodes in a burst of flame. Rescue workers and fire fighters don’t expect to find Joe and Jimbo alive – but they had taken refuge inside the same old sofa used as a hiding place by the traveller boys. They emerge smoke-stained but unharmed. Jimbo is re-united with his family, Sophie is re-united with Joe, and Weller gets his evidence, discovered in the pram where it had been secreted by Petie and Paulie – he arrests Mad Dog and his gang later that night. Weller is true to his word and the next day, Joe and Sophie say good-bye to Jimbo as he and his family leave to re-start their life abroad, Joe promising to keep in touch with his new-found son. And as this particular corner of Belfast settles back into normality, he discovers that the police will not, in fact be pressing charges against him – and that his mobster father-in-law has become a police informer and is no longer a threat to

him. With Sophie by his side, Joe’s life too, can now return to normal.

After such intense, dramatic films as Hotel Rwanda and In the Name of the Father, George welcomed the chance to work on something that would show a lighter-hearted side of Northern Ireland. He co-wrote and directed Whole Lotta Sole, saying “I did want to show that I could do comedy. That I have a softer side, and I like, I actually prefer, people walking out of the cinema with a laugh and a smile, rather than feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders. So it was good to flex my muscles and try that.”

George, who also won an Oscar in 2012 for his comic short film The Shore, has made his career directing big budget drama about ordinary people facing extraordinary challenges, and in that sense Whole Lotta Sole follows directly from his own tradition as a filmmaker.

Brendan Fraser – Joe Maguire

Best-known for his role in family-oriented adventure franchises, The Mummy, and George of the Jungle, actor Brendan Fraser has enjoyed a widely varied career that has taken him to the height of art film greatness, as well as comedies with a broader appeal. It was from the comedic side of things that he began his career with Encino Man in 1991, before going on to earn accolades for his clean-cut charisma in award-winning offerings like Gods and Monsters, The Quiet American and the Oscar-winning Best Picture Crash. For Fraser, Whole Lotta Sole was an easy decision to make once he heard that not only was Terry George one of the screenwriters but he had signed on to direct as well. Fraser said about George, "In terms of do you aspire to better yourself and your understanding of cinema by working with those who have esteemed track records such as him, the answer is yes." During filming Fraser apparently felt strangely at home in Belfast and said with a name like Brendan Fraser the rest of the cast was constantly teasing him. Fraser joked, "Brendan being a very typically Irish name and Fraser being a typically Scottish name and then when I when told them my middle name was James which is typically a British name, they were like in an (Irish accent) "Who the (bleep) are you, pick a side." Everyone on the cast had a sense of humour which Fraser appreciated saying, "In the end that's what is important because this picture is a comedy and its set on the backdrop of a place that had some very troubled and challenging times." He feels that because he did not grow up in that environment he is almost looking through the perspective of his character. Fraser stated, "It is acceptable to touch on the subject as if from the eyes of this character, where as if it's with the locals, the locals will know the locals point of view." For Fraser it was an absolute privilege working with Terry George and said, "I was giddy to understand he would take on the directing assignment whereas first I saw he was names as the screenwriter." Whole Lotta Sole embraces what Fraser describes as the Northern Ireland film. According to Fraser, "It's a genre in and of itself, it’s hard to put your finger on it but it goes something like you got poke fun at yourself and then things are deadly serious when they are deadly serious."

Colm Meaney – Detective Weller

The Dublin native began his acting career at the age of 14, eventually receiving formal training at Dublin's prestigious Abbey Theatre School of Acting and going on to join the Irish National Theatre Company. Meaney eventually graduated to the English stage, working in various London theatres, and then began to audition for television work, mainly landing bit parts in such TV shows as the cop drama Z Cars. Meaney moved to the U.S. in 1982, continuing to work mainly on the stage, but gradually made the transition into television and film playing small parts and guest roles on a variety of series. He was part of the cast of One Life to Live from 1986 to 1987, playing Patrick London, and then was hired for a bit part on Encounter at Farpoint, the pilot for the Star Trek: The Next Generation series. He was hired again for another part and then given the role of Chief Miles Edward O'Brien, and quickly went from being a bit player to an important member of the ensemble cast. The character was transferred to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the pilot for that series, and Meaney became a staple member of the show's cast. During his tenure on both Star Trek series, Meaney's motion picture career began to take off, as the bit parts he was given gradually became more substantial. He made his greatest impact in smaller films like the so-called Barrytown Trilogy The Commitments (1991), in which he played the father of one of the band members; The Snapper (1993), in which he portrayed Dessie, who finds himself out of a job and suddenly a grandfather; and The Van (1996), which cast him as Larry, a layabout who manages to have a grand idea one day that results in he and a friend starting a business out of a derelict vending van. He has continued to work steadily well into the 21st century in a variety of projects including Bitter Harvest, Layer Cake, and Turning Green. Yaya Alafia (nee Dacosta) – Sophie

Model-turned-actress YaYa DaCosta reportedly harboured dreams of movie-stardom from the age of four, and gained acceptance to New York's LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts when she was in her teens. However DaCosta soon rejected the performing arts in favour of a more practical career as an educator, following in the footsteps of her university professor father and her school-founder mother. Years later, after completing boarding school in New England and studying international relations at the Ivy League Brown University, DaCosta heeded the prompting of friends who encouraged her, to enter the reality series America’s Next Top Model; she was accepted and shortly thereafter secured a contract with the prestigious Ford Agency. DaCosta broke through to feature stardom with her role (opposite Antonio Banderas) as urban high school student-turned-dancer LaRhette in the drama Take the Lead (2006), and followed this up with a string of appearances on high profile US television shows, like Ugly Betty and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, before starring opposite Mark Ruffalo in the independent break out hit The Kids Are Alright (2010).
