JOHORE CULTURESJohor has been influenced by trading visitors and tourists throughout history.
Zapin Dance: It is a popular form of dance especially in Johor and genera
Malaysia. Originally, it was performed exclusively in religious ceremonies onmales. However, it gradually became a traditional form of entertainment afemales perform it nowadays. Zapin dance is performed in pairs while tradmusic is played with dok, rebana, marwas, violin, accordion and gambus.
Dishes in Johor are influenced by MaritimeSoutheast Asian and Arabian cultures. Somerecipes include ingredients that are not foundelsewhere in Malaysia. Some of the popular dishesin Johor are dishes such as Laksa Johor andRoti Jala are prepared with special Johor touch.

Revitalisation of Sungai Segget
In the 1800s when Singapore was part of the Malay States, the
ruler then, Temenggong Ibrahim, adopted the Kangchu System
introduced by Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore. Sungai Segge
major waterway that leads to Johor Bahru’s main thoroughfare.
For decades the river was infamous for the pungent stink of
refuse as it was also a dumping ground for waste matter from t
living along its banks. The repulsive smell, most acute at low tid
permeate the whole neighbourhood. When the tide was high, w
the upper reaches of Sungai Segget as its river mouth opened
Straits of Johor.

Process in reviving Sungai Segget, some key
objectives identified are:

beautification programme.
• Execute river catchment management in terms
of planning and development controls for the
various land use and activities.
• Better environmental management of stormwater/runoff to prevent and manage pollutants
from entering the river system.

SUMMARY
Preservation and conservation are an integral part of a stat
as it is a vital link to past development.
We need to ensure that the historical and cultural aspects oare preserved, enhanced and promoted.
An important aspect of urban regeneration is theneed to be sensitive to preserve and even enhance the secommunity that has been built over many generations.
