General Manager’s Message

Brrr..really? November and December have been busy, busy months. This past November was a record breaker, giving us

events 16 days in a row! That was fun! No really, it was.

In December we had large holiday parties with as many as 400 guests in attendance. As we approach the cold winter

months of January, February and March, we have many events booked that come back faithfully every year.

The 2017 weekends are booking fast, so please contact us soon if you or anyone you know are thinking of hosting an

event.

Most weekends, specifically Saturdays for Weddings in the Ballroom, are already booked and we are booking into 2018 at a

rate.

We look forward to this winter and to seeing you all as we make Cosmopolitans and Margaritas, serve local brews and rumchata experiments in the Cantina ..."baby it's cold outside!"

I want to thank everyone in the gin family for everything this fall. It was a pleasure to host gin, and I am

If you would like to learn how to play, I will be available to teach you how to play or practice playing on Wednesday evenings this winter.

Give me a call at 899-5149, and we can arrange a time to play. We would love to have more members join us on Wednesday nights this

JANUARY ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT Saturday, January 14, 7:00 pm in the Cantina

La Scorta (The Bodyguards) Winner of Five Italian Oscars

Sicily, 1992: When a high-profile judge and his bodyguard are brutally murdered, four reluctant young cops are assigned as La Scorta-Italian for “the escorts”-to protect the replacement prosecutor from Mafia assassins. But in a country where high-level corruption and sudden violence are a way of life, the squad quickly finds themselves outnumbered, outgunned and desperately out of time. Even if they can survive the daily threats of ambushes and car bombings will they survive personal conflicts and backroom betrayals?

Movie is in Italian with English subtitles. Donations accepted to defray costs. Join us for complimentary snacks and a suspenseful story

FEBRUARY ITALIAN MOVIE NIGHT Saturday, February 11th, 7:00 pm in the Cantina

Louis Prima-The Wildest

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 1999 Hamptons International Film Festival before Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin or Tom Jones ever played the stages of Las Vegas there was Louis Prima. One of America’s most hypnotic and original performers, Prima’s career spanned several decades and turned out hits like “Buona Sera Signorina”, “That Old Black Magic", "Sing, Sing, Sing", and "Jump, Jive an' Wail". In Disney's animated classic The Jungle Book, Prima created the "hep" voice of King Louie the orangutan, which still stands as one of the studio’s most beloved characters. This film profiles the magnetic Louis Prima in a nostalgic historical journey through the music scenes of a racy New Orleans, the swinging jazz culture of uptown New York and Las Vegas's "formative" years. As a solo act or with his wife, acclaimed singer Keely Smith, Louis Prima was and will forever be "the wildest" man in show business!

Movie is English (no need for subtitles). Donations accepted to defray costs. Join us for complimentary snacks and the story of one the great Italian-American entertainers of the 20th century!

“1000 Italian First Words”, a Children’s Learning Book

The Cultural Committee is selling the Book for $15 each.

The first steps in learning a new language are made easy and fun in this engaging picture-and-word book. Containing more than 1000 Italian words, all of them illustrated with lively drawings by Susie Lacome. Words and images are arranged by subject, such as the bedroom, the garden, food, shapes and clothes, and will immediately capture the interest of young readers. Simple questions in English and Italian allow beginners to explore the language further. It would also make a great Christmas gift. Call Jim DiBiase at 767-2293 or Cammy Reali at 939-8570 to order a copy.

If our young readers and their parents show enough interest, we will institute a children’s class to further their understanding and grasp of some basic Italian.

REVISITING AN ITALIAN CHRISTMAS EVE DINNER

Friday, January 13, 2017 $35 Members; $40 Guests

Doors open at 6:00 pm; Dinner served at 6:30 pm

Last January the Cultural Committee served a traditional Italian-American Christmas Day Dinner. After which we asked our guests if they preferred a Christmas Dinner or a Christmas Eve Dinner for this coming January. Our guests voted unanimously for the “Seven Fish Dinner”, or as we Italians call it “La Vigilia Natale”. Since we’ve had such persistent positive feedback from those who attend, we will renew it as an annual event for as long as there is continued interest from our members.

The Seven Fish Dinner is the celebration of Christmas Eve and considered the most festive night of the year. While holiday meals are an integral part of our social culture, Christmas Eve is a special time for families to attend mass and then gather with family and friends to celebrate and reminisce about the past.

Every year the Cultural Committee tries to incorporate different recipes from different regions of Italy. For this year’s Dinner the Committee has chosen the following menu:

Appetizer: Calamari, baccala salad, and roasted peppers (roasted in the oven). Soup: Baccala & chickpeas in a red sauce.

Pasta: Two types of pasta served family style: pasta with acciughe (anchovies) in a white sauce and pasta ala frutta di mare in a red sauce. Entree: Baked scallops with broccoli rapa and fried cauliflower.

Dessert: An assortment of homemade Italian cookies and spumoni with claret sauce. Bread served at each table.

Two bottles of wine served at each table.

We must limit the number of guests for this event to 150 people, so please call early to reserve your tickets. Please call Marianne Reali at 415-6341 or Jim DiBiase at 767-2292 for reservations. We hope to see you there; we’re sure it will be a fun evening!!!!!!!! Thanks, Marianne Reali

Italian Idiom for January:

Prendere un granchio: To catch a crab. This means that the end result of something is a lot lower than expected. It

can also mean that you have made a big mistake. If you are a fisherman and you are hoping to catch a fish, you’ll

probably be disappointed to catch a crab!
