I write this from Toronto as I attend the Rotary World Convention. What a year it has been & to think I am so very fortunate to finish this year being amongst so many (in fact 24,000) others attending this event. It is a wonderful way to finish a most memorable year. I will always be very thankful to so many who assisted RCE to achieve all that we have done throughout this Rotary year. Thank you to my Board who stood by this President throughout, to all Committee Chairs & their committees for all that you have achieved & a special thank you to the front desk team who set-up every week for the Club Meetings. Such an important role that we are all most appreciative of. As a team we did it! President’s night will be a night that I will always remember. Thank you to Maria Kouppas for being such a fabulous MC as always, to the organising team & thank you for a very funny “skit”. I was most relieved to share this with Grant Sheldon I must say! The highlight of the night of course being the launch of RCE book of History. RCE will always be so grateful to PP Maurice Mollica & PP Alan Murphy for their dedication to this special project. A fabulous & proud history that deserved to be written & to be shared with many today, tomorrow & always. Thank you also for the beautiful gifts that I am most appreciative of. Thank you to the Men’s Shed for the lovely sign & the “Silver Princess” tree that will be planted at my farm & will be there as a lasting memory. Most fitting also when yesterday, at the Opening Ceremony, much of RI President Ian Riseley’s speech was centred around thanking all Rotary Clubs around the world who planted trees. This was his No 1 goal for the year & he was so very pleased that the Rotary World followed his dream to make a difference to our environment for the future. He alone was invited to plant 200+ trees around the world & they are currently doing a final tally for all Clubs. RCE’s 51 trees planted has been reported! I spoke with Juliet (Ian’s wife yesterday) who said that one of Ian’s regrets is that Royce Abbey passed away just before he was announced as 2017/2018 RI President. Ian spoke about Royce’s impact on his life in his speech at the Aust / NZ breakfast yesterday. I took the RCE book of history to the breakfast & did have the opportunity to show it to President Ian & he liked his photo in the front. The day started yesterday with this breakfast sitting with many District 9800 attendees all wearing our red End Polio t-shirts. This was followed by a visit to the "House of Friendship” where all the stands are displayed. It is fantastic to see so many Rotarians doing so much around the world. Jane Carbone & I had much fun talking with many. Then it was off to the “Opening Ceremony”. The highlight for me was the speech given by Princess Anne & standing to sing the Australian National Anthem. What a proud Australian I am! At the ceremony we sat next to members of a Rotary Club from Tanzania. Such an interesting conversation, particularly about their work in maternal health care. Afterwards we exchanged flags with members from Pakistan & Phillipines & again it was so interesting talking with them. They were very excited to be doing this with Australians…just like the current RI President!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Fellow Rotarians & Friends, Today I scribe my final message as Rotary Club of Essendon’s 83rd President. I write this from Toronto as I attend the Rotary World Convention. Another highlight for Jane & I was to meet up with Marlena Frankenhaeuser who is currently a Rotary Exchange student here in Canada. Many will remember that RCE hosted her sister Freja 2 years ago. Like Freja, Marlena has had the time of her life & is in no hurry to return home to Finland next month. Today Jane & I head off to the morning session, hearing from Laura Bush & others & then this afternoon we will be attending breakout sessions that look most interesting. Yesterday President Ian Riseley told us all that the reason the Conference is being held so late in this Rotary year is because of wanting to hold this event at the Air Canada Centre here in Toronto where the ice hockey is played. Just in case the “Maples" made it the finals, the venue could not be booked until the end of June. Isn’t it great how everything revolves around sport no matter where you are in the world & yes, everywhere you look there are TV’s playing the World Cup. All Rotarians around the world were thanked for working their change-overs around this late date. This includes RCE who have been most supportive in working around Jane & myself coming here. It is each & everyone of all these Rotarians here in Toronto, around the world & at the Rotary Club of Essendon that have done exactly what was asked to be done this Rotary year….to "Make A Difference"! How honoured & proud I am to have been the RCE President as we have achieved this together. Yesterday I bought the badge that says “Put Life into Rotary – Your Life”. Yes, the theme for Royce Abbey’s year as President & that is certainly what I have done this year for RCE & I will continue to do as a proud Rotarian. Thank you again one & all. Have a great week & see you at the Change-over Meeting next Tuesday. WOW! We did it! Photos from the Convention

Speaker for the day – Dr Virginia Billson - MS

A sufferer of MS is Melbourne-based pathologist and Sceptic Society member Dr Virginia Billson. She experienced double vision and an inability to speak after being diagnosed. "I could see myself not being able to work, not doing anything, possibly confined to a wheelchair, or worse," she told 7.30. The attacks continued for five years and medication alone did not help. With nothing to lose, Dr Billson tried the OMS program, changed her diet, and began exercising regularly. Eventually, the attacks became less frequent and less severe. Although she still struggles finding time to meditate, Dr Billson credits the OMS program with turning her life around. Dr Billson spoke to the members and guests present with the help of an overhead presentation a talk she gave to the 7.30

report.

New member proposal and induction process

The way in which we propose and induct new members has been modified to shorten processing times and the amended

procedure is printed below for your reference.

Every Rotarian has the privilege and obligation of seeking qualified members. In this way all Club members can help their Club

achieve a full representation of the business and professional life of their Community. The procedure by which a new member is

proposed and inducted is as follows:

A member shall provide a candidate’s name to the Board through the Secretary by completion of the membership proposal

form. A transferring or former member of another club may also be proposed for membership by the former club. The proposal

is kept confidential unless the Board instructs otherwise.

The Board shall ensure that the candidate meets all of Rotary’s membership requirements and approve or reject the

membership proposal within seven days.

If the decision of the Board is favourable, the candidate’s name and proposed classification is advertised in Contact. If no

member of the club submits a written objection, including reasons for the objection, to the Board within seven days, a

membership interview is conducted ensuring the candidate is aware of the financial and practical obligations of membership.

Upon payment of the current dues or a proportional part thereof as determined by the Board, the candidate is considered to be

elected to membership.

Following the election the Secretary shall order appropriate Rotary paraphernalia and the President shall arrange for the new

member's induction. The President assigns a current member to assist with the new member's assimilation to the Club and

appoints the new member to a Club Committee. The Secretary registers the new member with RI, ClubRunner and Rotary Down

Under.
