The Cotuit Civic Association Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 16th at Freedom Hall, 7:30 pm. Approval is needed for a number of proposed changes/updates to our by- laws. New members of our Executive Board of Directors will be introduced. Following the Annual Meeting, The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy will make their presentation with time for questions. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is the non-profit group researching, tagging, and following the Atlantic Great White Sharks in Chatham, Cape Cod and world- wide. Come and learn the latest on sharks and shark locations. The Cotuit Civic Association hosted the Barnstable Deputy Police Chief Mathew Sonnabend in July. Highlights of the Deputy Police Chiefs discussion were that: 1. trucks, cars and bicycles ride on the right side of the road with the traffic. 2. pedestrians, joggers, walkers, etc. are on the left side facing traffic. You can ride your bicycle on sidewalks, outside of business districts but please remember that pedestrian have the right of way. 3. slowing down, being aware of others and common courtesy will insure SAFETY on the streets and sidewalks of Cotuit. What does the Cotuit Civic Association do? The 4th of July parade and Christmas in Cotuit are run by the Civic Association and highlight the children of our Village. Our mission statement is summed up in two words; educate and communicate. This Cotuit Currents Newsletter highlights the events of other non-profits in Cotuit and is sent to all mailing addresses in Cotuit - nine newsletters per year. The informative Freedom Hall meetings include budget and candidates night for the Cotuit Fire District and safety and public concerns as needed. Each year, along with the Precinct 7 Town Councillor, we summarize the Concerns of Cotuit, meet with the Barnstable Town Manager, and host a 'site visit' in Cotuit with the Town Manager and his Department Heads. Again this year, most of these improvements are complete. If you have a concern, need to address a public problem, or have a way to improve our Village please email us at our website cotuitcivicassociation.org. We will summarize these Concerns and meet with the Town Manager in January 2017. The Cotuit Bass and Bluefish Shootout is Saturday, August 13th - weigh-in at the Town Dock at 3:00 pm. The coupon at the end of this newsletter is your way of paying your dues and supporting the Cotuit Civic Association. I am retiring as President and a Board Member of the Cotuit Civic Association after the Annual Meeting. Cotuit is a very special Village and it has been a privilege to work with so many dedicated and hard working people. I'll see you on my walks. I thank you for all your support and encouragement over these years. It has been great fun. Rich Boden, President The Cotuit Fire District (CFD) has recently received a credit rating from S&P Global of AA+. This rating is very near the top rating given by S&P Global. In S&P Global’s opinion the CFD has an extremely strong market value per capita; stable financial position as evidenced by very strong reserves; property taxes which are not subject to the levy constraints of proposition 2 ½ and moderate-to-low overall debt burdens with limited future capital needs. In addition the CFD’s Water Department application to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for financial assistance with its water tower project has been approved. The initial project application was for $2,500,000 with a $200,000 grant request. The USDA approved the application but increased the grant to $500,000 including an interest rate of 2.25% results in a very substantial saving for the CFD over the 40 year term of the loan. The treasurer, Michael Daly, working in conjunction with the Prudential Commission, and the Water Commissioners, chaired by Ted Barnacle, are to be congratulated for their fine work in helping to keep CFD costs as low as possible.
