GARY & BARBARA GIBBS
Before getting into my Corvette History, Barbara and I want to say how happy we are to join SLO Vettes!
We are looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying some Corvette fun.
When I was 17 my dad bought a used 1959 Corvette and two years later I bought it from him. That was
our first Corvette. I drove that car until I was drafted in 1967 and Daddy sold it after I went in the Army.
The next Corvette came in the picture when I came home on leave after graduating from Officer
Candidate School and Daddy and I went looking for another Corvette. We found a 1965 convertible with
a hardtop and I had it until I went to Viet Nam and Daddy was nice enough to take care of it while I was
gone. When I returned home on leave we went to Santa Maria and traded it for a new 1970 Mulsane
Blue, 350/4 speed (#3). That car lasted for about two years and I decided to sell it. The same day it was
sold I bought a 1961, 283/2x4 barrels and 4 speed (#4). I drove that car until I went to Viet Nam again
and I left it with my roommate and then traded it for a new Triumph motorcycle and $850 and then I
was without a Corvette until 1975 when I purchased a 1973, T/top, 350, automatic (#5). At that time I
was out of the Army and attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. When I graduated I sold that car and went
into the motorcycle business with a friend and we owned the Suzuki and Kawasaki motor cycle shop in
SLO. During that time my dad bought his second corvette, almost a barn find but worse because it was
just sitting outside. It was a 1958 convertible with a hardtop and several different coats of paint on top
of each other and needing lots of bodywork. I got that Corvette from him again and striped all the paint
and repainted it.
This is when I met Barbara and we fell in Love and got married July 17, 1982. We still had the 1958 but
we sold it shortly after (#6). This began a long period without a corvette but I always knew I wanted
another one. That time finely came in 2002 when Barbara and I bought a Black 1998 coup (#7). We sold
that one and bought a Red Convertible 4 speed and kept it until 2005 (#8). During this time I had gone
back in the California Army National Guard full time and in 2006 I retired from the Army but I also
bought a new 2006 Magnetic Red, automatic, Coup (#9). We also moved to Washington DC where I
worked as a government contractor for five years. DC area is not the place to have a new Corvette
because it does not get used much, weather, traffic and lots other reasons. We sold it in 2011 and
shortly after that I completely retired and moved back to Paso Robles. For the last several months I was
looking for my next Corvette and Barbara found at a Dealer in Las Vegas.
This brings us to our current Corvette, 2003, 50th Anniversary, convertible automatic with 12640 miles
on it now (#10). Last month Barbara and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and also joined SLO
Vettes. I have said much about by Dad and Mom but some of you know them from when they were in
the club themselves, J. R. and Juanita Gibbs. When they were in the club you will remember they had a
red 1999 coup. Since then they traded it in on a used red 2006 coup (#4 for them). They enjoyed being
in the club and attending the different events. They are both staying close to home now but Daddy still
16
enjoys getting out in his Corvette even if I have to drive. They both said to say HI to everyone and keep
enjoying the Corvette Spirit. I know Barbara and I plan to.
Thank you for allowing us to add this in the news letter and we look forward to reading everyone else’s!!
I do not have pictures of all my cars but I have a few and I hope they come out.
