PERSPECTIVES

At the expense of natural andhuman resources

Saturday, 7 April, 2012

Koreans see Myanmar as a country richin natural resources such as minerals, naturalgas, and forest and sea products and alsohuman resources such as labour that is muchcheaper than theirs. As Myanmar is locatedbetween two Asian giants China and India andforming part as a divide between South Asiaand Southeast Asia Koreans also perceive ourcountry as a hub where they can participate inhighway, bullet train, deep-sea port or economiczone projects for their own profits. So, Koreanscome to Myanmar to do business for their owninterest and that is fair because it’s today’sglobal trend!

As for Myanmar, it sees Korea as atechnologically advanced country enjoyingrapid industrial development and GDP growthstanding as the 13th (in some statistics 14th)largest economy of the world. We hope that bycooperating with Korea, we can acquire itsadvanced technology and science, expertiseand experience through joint-ventures or otherbusiness initiatives. And in the course of bilateraleconomic cooperation, we can expect a largeamount of Korean direct investment flowinginto our country, and helping further stabilizeour currency in one way or another. What’smore, like some of our neighbors, we will havea chance to receive and accommodate moreKorean tourists, enticing them into spendingmore. Accordingly, we need enhancedcooperation with the East Asian country forour own interest and that’s fair too. So, weinvite or welcome Korean entrepreneurs!

Subsequently there should not be anyunequal practices in Myanmar-Koreaeconomic cooperation. As both countriesmaking business overtures for they are eagerto expand their economies, they must findcommon ground that serves mutual interest.

Fair enough, Koreans or any otherdeveloped countries will exploit our naturalresources including labour as they bring capitalinto our country. But the important thing forour citizens is that they must acquire knowledge, expertise, technology and experience from themwithout fail because every bit of benefit aninvestor country brings into Myanmar is at theexpense of our natural and human resources.

OVER THE GULF OF ALASKA, 6 April—The long, lonelyvoyage of the Japanese ghost ship is over. A US Coast Guardcutter unleashed cannon fire on the abandoned 164-footRyou-Un Maru on Thursday, ending a journey that beganwhen last year’s tsunami dislodged it and set it adrift acrossthe Pacific Ocean. It sank into waters more than 6,000 feet deepin the Gulf of Alaska, about 180 miles west of the southeastAlaska coast, the Coast Guard said.

The crew pummeled the ghost ship with high explosiveammunition, and the Ryou-Un Maru soon burst into flames, took on water and began listing, officials said.

A huge column of smoke could be seen over the gulf asa Coast Guard C-130 cargo plane, sent to observe the sinking, dropped a buoy to monitor for any possible pollution fromthe sunken ship.

The Coast Guard warned mariners to stay away, andaviation authorities did the same for pilots.

In about four hours, the ship vanished into the water, saidChief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow in Juneau.

Officials decided to sink the ship rather than risk thechance of it running aground or endangering other vessels inthe busy shipping lanes between North America and Asia. Heship had no lights or communications system, and its tankwas able to carry more than 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

Officials, however, didn’t know how much fuel, if any,was aboard. It’s less risky than it would be running into shoreor running into (maritime) traffic,” Coast Guard spokesmanPaul Webb said.

BEIJING, 6 April — China on Thursday called on allrelevant parties to comprehensively lift sanctions againstMyanmar as soon as possible.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarksat a regular Press briefing when asked to comment on thesuccessful holding of parliamentary by-elections in Myanmaron 1 April. The elections were the first to be held since thecurrent civilian government took office in March 2011, andwere generally affirmed by the nation and the internationalcommunity, said Hong.

China hopes that the by-elections will advance theprocess of domestic political reconciliation as well as nationalstability and development in Myanmar, he noted. “China’sposition on relevant issues is consistent," said Hong whenresponding to whether the international community shouldcase sanctions against Myanmar.

“We have taken note of that the United States and theEuropean Union are considering to partly ease their sanctionson Myanmar, and we welcome that,” he said. Terrafugia envisions flying carson autopilot

NEW YORK, 6 April —Aviation companyTerrafugia’s first step towardcreating a flying car does notallow drivers to hover overdowntown traffic gridlockand land on city roads orhighways. But the company’svision for making flying saferand more accessible couldpave the way for flying carsof the future to sensibly flythemselves. Today’s bigcommercial jets can alreadyfly and land themselveswithout much help fromhuman pilots. Suchautomated flying techno-logies could soon take off ineven smaller aircraft such asTerrafugia’s “Transition” —a vehicle that is less the stuffof science fiction and more ofa “street-legal airplane” thatfolds its wings to drivebetween small airports.

“The evolution in theTransition is going to comein the capability of theelectronics and autopilot,”said Cliff Allen, vice presidentof sales at Terrafugia and atrained flight instructor.“Everybody has heard of theGoogle [driverless] car. Thetechnology is there to makean airplane that can virtuallyfly itself.” Terrafugia

LHC is back with big energy boostGENEVA, 6 April—The

Large Hadron Collider (LHC)is operating again after itswinter break. Early onThursday, opposing stablebeams of protons weresmashed into each other atfour observation positions. The total collision energy inthese bunches of sub-atomicparticles was eight trillionelectron volts — a worldrecord. Scientists expect thebig boost in capability tosignificantly increase thecollider’s chances ofdiscovering “new physics”.

The great expectation isthat they will definitivelyconfirm or deny the existenceof the Higgs boson, theelusive particle that wouldhelp explain why matter hasmass.

“The experience of twogood years of running at 3.5

It is planned that thecollider will collect data untilNovember, after which it willbe upgraded during a

shutdown period that will last

20 months. That should resultin an operating proton beamenergy of 14 trillionelectronvolts, or teraele-ctronvolts — another greatleap in capability. The LHCcollaboration hopes to reachthat milestone in 2014, re-starting the hunt for novelphysics in early 2015.

In the 2012 run of

experiments, the Higgs will bea key focus.

Teams working on thetwo major detectors at thefacility announced at the endof last year that they had seenhints of the particle, butstopped short of claimingthey had seen it withcertainty.

Antarctic ice sheet dwindles under ‘eyes’ ofsatellite

PARIS, 6 April — As aEuropean satellite enters itssecond decade in orbit, itcontinues to observe theretreat of an Antarctic icesheet, which has beendwindling due to warming. The satellite, Envisat, waslaunched by the EuropeanSpace Agency (ESA) on 1March, 2002. One of its firstobservations was the

disintegration of 1,235 squaremiles (3,200 squarekilometres) of ice from part ofthe Larsen Ice Shelf. (Iceshelves are “permanent”floating sheets of iceconnected to a land mass, with most of the world’s iceshelves hugging the coast ofAntarctica.)

The Larsen Ice Shelfencompasses shelves: A (the

smallest), B and C (thelargest), which line theeastern side of the AntarcticPeninsula.

The peninsula is one ofthe fastest-warming places onEarth, jutting north of the restof the frozen continent. Overits decade in orbit, Envisathas watched the B shelfdwindle by an additional 691square miles (1,790 square

km), due to calving eventswhereby large chunks of icebreak off from the main shelf. For instance, a chunk twicethe size of the city of Dallasbroke off of Larsen B inJanuary 2005.

Half a million Mac computers‘infected with malware’

LONDON, 6 April — More than half amillion Apple computers have been infectedwith the Flashback Trojan, according to aRussian anti-virus firm. Its report claims thatabout 600,000 Macs have installed the malware— potentially allowing them to be hijackedand used as a “botnet”. The firm, Dr Web,says that more than half that number arebased in the US. Apple has released a securityupdate, but users who have not installed thepatch remain exposed. Flashback was firstdetected last September when anti-virusresearchers flagged up softwaremasquerading itself as a Flash Player update.

Once downloaded it deactivated someof the computer’s security software. Laterversions of the malware exploited weaknessesin the Java programming language to allowthe code to be installed from bogus siteswithout the user’s permission. Dr Web saidthat once the Trojan was installed it sent amessage to the intruder’s control server witha unique ID to identify the infected machine.

confounded doctors just by being alive: Thetiny boy with twig-thin limbs was given justdays to live when he was born with almost nointestines — eight months ago. Now there’sa glimmer of hope for another miracle. Peoplein Europe and the United States have startedoffering funds to help Andrei get acomplicated intestine transplant in the UnitedStates, the Romanian pediatrician in chargeof the baby’s care said on Thursday.

The offers came after an Associated Press

story last week chronicled how Dr CatalinCirstoveanu, head of the neonatal unit atBucharest’s Marie Curie children’s hospital, flies babies abroad for lifesaving surgery toget around a culture of corruption in whichmany doctors won’t operate unless they’rebribed. AP photographs of Andrei in hisincubator generated sympathy around theworld.

“Offers of help have come in, particularlyfrom abroad, from a non-governmentalorganization,” Cirstoveanu said. —Internet

Antibody clues to AIDS vaccine successLONDON, 6 April—The success of an AIDS

vaccine trial that in 2009 was shown to protect 31percent of people studied may have been due tovarying levels of antibody responses in thepatients, researchers said on Thursday. Differenttypes of antibody responses were associated withwho became infected and who did not, accordingto an analysis of the results published in the April5 edition of the New England Journal ofMedicine.

For instance, a type of antibody producedby the body to ward off infection, known as IgG,

could attach itself to the surface of the HIV proteinand appeared to help prevent infection in somepeople. People received the vaccine and whoseIgG antibodies were able to bind to this region, called V1V2, showed lower infection rates thanthe placebo group. On the other hand, patientswhose blood tests showed the highest levels of adifferent antibody, IgA, appeared to have lessprotection against HIV than people with lowerlevels, leading scientists to think it may haveactually interfered with the vaccine and made itless effective. —Internet

Blackberryearthquake app

rolled out in MexicoMEXICO CITY , 6 April — Civil authorities

in Mexico City have rolled out a free app thatwill warn people when an earthquake isimminent. Mayor of Mexico City MarceloEbrard unveiled the app on Tuesday, on behalfof Mexico City’s Civil Protection service.

The app triggers an alarm on the phoneonce an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 or higherhas been detected. On receiving the signal, the phone makes a sound and vibrates, evenif the device is set to silent.

The app has been developed forBlackberry, according to Mr Ebrard, becauseonly its handsets could send out mass alertsquickly enough: up to five seconds fromwhen the signal is given.

Blackberry has been given access to thesignal which is operated by Mexico’sSeismological Service, which continuouslymonitors for earthquake activity throughregional stations.

“If tomorrow someone else does it, we’llalso give them the signal,” Mr Ebrard said.Although the alarm may only give people amatter of seconds to prepare for an earthquake, authorities believe this may allow them toadopt safer positions, and save lives.

Evicted 101-year-old Detroiter gets her home backDETROIT, 6 April — Baking cookies never seemed as sweet for 101-year-old Texana Hollis as it did on

Wednesday, when she tearfully was allowed back into the home her husband bought after World War IIfollowing her eviction seven months ago. Foreclosure initially forced Hollis from the home where she’d spentsix decades of her life, then federal officials wouldn’t let her move back in because of its dilapidated condition. That’s when Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom and his charity stepped in, and convinced volunteersand businesses to do the same.

“God bless everyone who had a hand in this,” Hollis said, tears swelling in her eyes, after she re-enteredthe home. One of her first tasks: Trying out the new stove to bake sugar and chocolate chip cookies, whichshe lifted off a tinfoil-covered baking sheet using a new spatula and carefully placed into a tin.

Albom and his charities helped renovate Hollis’ house after buying it from the US Department of Housingand Urban Development.

Nuclear power, long advertised as safe and cheap, provided almost 30 percent of Japan’s electricity before thecrisis but now all but one of Japan’s 54 reactors are off-line,mainly for maintenance.

The last reactor will shut down on 5 May. “They want toavoid setting a precedent of the country operating withoutnuclear power because it will create a huge barrier in terms ofrestarts,” said Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian Studies atTemple University’s Tokyo campus. “People will questionwhy we need it,” he said.— Reuters

Yaya Toure deniesYaya Toure deniesBalotelli bust-up

LONDON, 6 April — Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure on Thursday dismissedreports of dressing-room bust-ups with team-mate Mario Balotelli. Reports alleged the pairclashed at half-time in City’s 3-3 draw at home to Sunderland last weekend as well as duringthe defeat at Swansea. But Toure said he views Balotelli as a “brother” and “loves” him.“They said I fought with Mario at Swansea and against Sunderland,” he said in an interviewwith the Daily Mail. “That shocked me. My lawyers called me about this and it was thefirst I knew about it.

“It’s just not true. It didn’t happen. I am a footballer, not a boxer. People don’t knowmy relationship with Mario. He’s not my friend, he’s my brother and I love him. To saywe had a fight is very sad. It upset me and I feel sorry for Mario. He suffers most from thesethings. “At half-time against Sunderland it was very difficult. We are trying to win theleague and are losing 2-1. It’s not good. But everybody was quiet. We were just lookingat each other, trying to find a way to turn the result. “But I didn’t even talk to Mario. Thenext day he sent me a text message saying, ‘Apparently we had a fight’. I just want to stoppeople writing and thinking that.”

Meanwhile, City manager Roberto Mancini, who has seen his side slip five pointsbehind leaders Manchester United in the race for the English Premier League title, added:“Yaya Toure — that is totally false.”—Internet
