Many records were established at this conference. We had the highest number of attendees, the greatest number of vendors, and the most people ever to take the Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) exam. Two counties (Washington and Cecil) had 100% attendance by their athletic directors. We offered seven Leadership Training Courses (LTC) during the conference. Although not a record, it is still impressive that so many LTC classes are available at one state conference. We had outstanding guest speakers and presenters at the conference. Ms. Suzanne Maxey gave a beautiful speech at our General Session meeting. Andy Pollin, radio personality and author, gave an insightful talk at the awards banquet. Dr. David Higgins made a fascinating presentation about his experiences as a doctor with the U.S.A. Olympic team. We also had interesting workshops done by Dr. David Hoch, CMAA; Michael Duffy, CMAA; Jack Holloway, and Mike Gelman, CMAA. The discussion panel workshop was also outstanding. We had athletic administrators from across Maryland and Delaware share their thoughts about current issues. And of course, Matt O’Hare, CAA, our Master of Ceremonies for the awards banquet, took full credit for the wonderful weather we had throughout the weekend! This year was our first attempt at having a joint conference with Delaware. I want to thank DAAD Executive Director, Bradley Layfield, for his efforts in making things go smoothly. It takes a lot of work by a lot of people to put on a conference. The MSADA members volunteer their time and talents to put on a conference which is both professional and friendly. I specifically want to thank Karl Heimbach, CMAA, Derek Maki, CMAA and Carol Satterwhite, CAA for all their work. The MSADA is in great shape. We are doing well because of the people who are willing to step up and help. I encourage all of our members to be active participants in our association. As we wind down the school year, I wish each of you a relaxing summer. Please remember that the MSADA is sponsoring the New and Aspiring AD Workshop and the Summer Institute in July. As you know, the vendors are a key part of our annual meetingeach year. I’m proud to report that we set a new record with 67total vendors this year. We had a good variety of displays tolook at and people to make contact with. We had some old facesand some new ones. The hall looked brighter and more invitingwith the changes to the design and the new curtains. For thefirst time, we had an MSADA booth located in the hall, whichallowed all of our members to visit the vendors on their wayback to pick up the conference gift. The gift this year was aflash drive along with a beautiful portfolio notebook.

Here’s a breakdown, which gives you a clearer picture of thisyear’s vendor hall. First off, we had 18 new vendors, one fromas far away as Utah, and another from Kansas. From last year’snew vendors, we had 10 return and nine vendors who have beenwith us for 3 to 5 years. As products change, new vendors appearwith new and interesting products. Of course, we alwaysappreciate our core group, led by the NEFF Company and Riddelland nine other exhibitors who have been in OC with us for atleast 15 or more years.

We increased our major corporate sponsors with Leisure Fitnessand Musco Lighting coming on board this year.

We held our annual social in the hall on Friday evening and itwas a blast. The next morning, we gave away tons of door prizesdonated by our vendors and the winners are listed on our websiteas well as in this edition of our newsletter.

Special thanks to RCI sound for providing the sound in thehall, including the music, that added to the ambiance.

Please remember, during the next year, try to patronize oursponsors.

MSADMSADMSADMSADMSADA Then and NowA Then and NowA Then and NowA Then and NowA Then and Now“A Conversation with Bob Foster”“A Conversation with Bob Foster”“A Conversation with Bob Foster”“A Conversation with Bob Foster”“A Conversation with Bob Foster”

Lee Dove, CAA, Athletic DirectorArchbishop Spalding High School

There are times in life when unexpected opportunities ariseallowing for chance meetings and good conversation. Suchwas the case at the 33rd annual MSADA conference in OceanCity this past April.

As a past president of the organization I had the good fortuneto sit down and talk with the person best referred to as a“founding father” of the organization. Bob Foster was the athleticdirector at Paint Branch High School in 1974 when he and ahandful of other AD’s had just begun to discuss the potentialrationale for a professional organization in the state of Maryland.Bob along with colleagues such as Bob Burris, Ed Novak, HughGelston, Bill Dargert, to name a few, shared their thoughts andideas and really got the ball rolling. But it was Bob Foster whotook the handoff of that ball and ran with it.

Mr. Foster recalled discussions with John Youngblood from theVirginia AD’s Association about the nuts and bolts ofestablishing such an organization. Virginia and 45 other statesalready had associations for athletic directors in place, so itseemed only natural that the AD’s in Maryland should not onlyconsider, but work towards establishing one of their own. Bob,with help from his wife, did all of the legwork in getting outletters to the nearly 300 schools from across the state, in aneffort to accumulate accurate information. Bob felt that anathletic directors association should include not only publicschools but private and parochial schools as well. He wasquoted in a Washington Post article as saying “We do haveroom for improvement in Maryland athletics. This is one thingthat will help bring us – bring everybody together and let uscommunicate.”

Thanks to Bob’s perseverance over the course of about 18 months, the membership count had grown to 110 schools. With agendaitems such as nominating officers, developing a conferenceschedule, selecting a location, and consideration of potentialvendors, the plans began to fall into place for the first officialAD’s conference in 1976. Ocean City was selected as the siteand it has remained the site for the past 33 years. Over thistime period the MSADA conference has been held at the FenwickInn, the Convention Center, the Carousel, the Sheraton, and forthe past many years at the Princess Royale Hotel. Jim Dillon(deceased) long time athletic director at Old Mill High Schoolwas selected as the first president. The conference had about

115 members in attendance, a dozen vendors, and all at a cost of$15 per member. The speakers addressed topics such as; therole of AD’s, record keeping and budgeting, and the implicationof interscholastic sports.

From those early formative years up to the present date, theMSADA has come a long way in making the current associationone of the finest in the nation. With all of the numerousprofessional development opportunities, certification programs, professional sponsorships, vendor support, and the wellcoordinated annual conference the MSADA has truly surpassedthe visions of those founding members so many years ago. Mr.Foster, who lives out of state and has not been at a conferencein many years, shared his delight at what he had witnessed atthis year’s event.

To Bob Foster, and the others who gave their time and talents inthe beginning stages of the organization, we say thank you.Without your vision and determination we would not be wherewe are today. To our current members, please remember thatthe MSADA is an organization about you and for you. Takeadvantage of all of the opportunities it affords. Be an activemember. Become involved.

Renew MSCA Memberships!Renew MSCA Memberships!Renew MSCA Memberships!Renew MSCA Memberships!Renew MSCA Memberships!

Please remind your coaches to renew their dual membership inthe Maryland State Coaches Association and the NationalFederation Coaches Association. Now is the time.

Why now? The membership year runs from August 1st throughJuly 31st regardless of when the membership form is received. Ifcoaches wait until September to renew or join, they are missingvaluable coverage.

Also, nominations for the State Coach of the Year Awards in thevarious sports are due October 15th. The later that a coach joinsor renews their membership, the less time there is to submit anomination.

Considering the enormous benefits, the $16 membership fee, which is the lowest of any state in the country, is a fantasticbargain. Therefore, please remind your coaches to renew orjoin now. Pay for their memberships if you can – there is nobetter investment.

If you have any questions or need more information, contactDr. David Hoch [email protected]

There has been a 35% increase in Certification participation and a 15%increase in the Leadership Training Program since last spring. To qualifyfor CAA and CMAA, applicants must produce their LTP certificates.Recently, there has been a large increase in requests for replacementcertificates. This indicates that people are not keeping the ones they

received after completion of their course. Prior to this spring, the NIAAA would take the time to look up old rosters to verifyattendance and completion instead of making them produce the certificate.
