Students Show What They Love About HACC
As part of the 50
th anniversary, the
Communications, Community Outreach
and Marketing subcommittee wanted to
highlight HACC’s students in a creative
way. Margaret Brandt, faculty
member in the visual arts, asked art
students to submit a design for a thank-
you card to the committee. Interested
students had to answer the question,
“What do you love about HACC?”
through their final art submission.
Following the submissions, the
subcommittee voted to choose the
thank-you card that will be used by
employees for the remainder of the
anniversary year. Michelle Oreo’s thank-you card, shown
at top right, was chosen.
Congratulations, Michelle! Please take a moment to view all of the thank-you card
submissions. It was a job well done by all students!

Clery Act Report Is Issued
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is required by the Jeanne Clery
Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC §
1092(f)) to publish an annual security report by Oct. 1 of each calendar year. This report
contains three years of campus crime statistics for incidents that occurred on a campus, in
unobstructed public areas immediately adjacent to or running through a campus and at
certain non-campus facilities owned or controlled by HACC. Also included in the report
are policy and procedure disclosures for emergency response, the reporting of crime,
response to rape and sexual assault and drug and alcohol control, among others. This
report is now available on HACC’s website. Free paper copies are available upon request
at any campus Security Office or Welcome Center.
HACC Expands and Upgrades Collegewide Wireless Access
HACC students are now enjoying greatly expanded wireless overage on all campuses,
thanks to a Collegewide effort to install more than 200 new wireless access points in time
for the start of our fall 2014 term. As of Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, we met our goal of
providing 90% internal coverage of every floor of every building
at every campus.
This accomplishment required coordination and collaboration
among multiple areas of the College: Office of Information
Services and Technologies
(OIST) staff, Virtual
Learning staff, Finance staff,
the Virtual Learning Student
Advisory Committee,
Executive Council of the
Student Government
Association and faculty. It also required the installation of more than four miles of cable.
4
According to Gary Barb, director of network infrastructure and systems services, the
project was developed in response to a September 2013 survey that identified information
technology needs. Once the project was approved, Dave Shaffer, manager of network
and data center operations, spearheaded the technical portion.
This project could not have been accomplished without the help of several OIST teams:
Gettysburg Campus — Scott Decker, campus director of technology support, and
Doug Docimo, user support technician
Harrisburg Campus — Rick Dullebawn, systems administrator, user support
specialists Travis Mast and Evelin Schwartz and student workers Gagandeep
Birdi, Jeff Heagy, Michael Lewis and Dan Martin
Lancaster Campus — Joshua Appleby, campus director of technical support
Lebanon Campus — user support technicians Shawn Dumez, Tom Haney and
Derek Hollinger
York Campus — user support technicians Eric Huotari and David Kerstetter,
systems service staff member Joel Petit and Patrick Schild, campus director of
technical support
OIST staff were also fortunate to work with Amy Withrow, executive director for
advancement and outreach for Virtual Learning, who helped to “wire-up” and install the
final Harrisburg Campus access point, located in the Evans Physical Education Center.
Facebook pages for HACC Virtual Learning and physical campuses have begun to post
messages announcing that HACC has expanded its wireless access.
HACC Foundation Allocations Committee Awards Over $225,000
In August 2014, the HACC Foundation Allocations Committee approved seven projects
totaling $229,295 for various facilities and program projects at the College. The projects
include purchasing portable flammable liquid and gas firefighting props, thermal imaging
cameras and portable generators to be used at the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety
Center (PSC). The purchase of a van was also approved to provide student athletes and
other students with transportation to athletic and special events.
HACC Honors Outstanding Employee Achievements With President’s Award
Please join me in congratulating the winners of the 2014 HACC President’s Award,
Camelia Maianu, assistant professor of psychology at the Harrisburg Campus, Robin
Sanders, enrollment services specialist at the York Campus and Cynthia Schanke,
instructional technology analyst for Virtual Learning and the Lebanon Campus. It was
my privilege to announce their awards at our 50th
Anniversary Convocation ceremony on
Friday, Sept. 19, 2014.

Cami was recognized for efforts that enhanced HACC’s reputation. She spearheaded
projects that included networking with local school districts and organizations to bring
Project Impact, an internationally acclaimed service learning curriculum, to the
Harrisburg area. Cami will travel to Romania this fall to become a certified Project
Impact trainer to allow HACC to continue building the spirit of giving back for local
youth.
Robin was chosen for efforts
that increased efficiency
with Collegewide
implication. She has
developed materials for the
financial literacy education
of students and materials for
Foundational Studies 100
classes. In addition to
developing the materials,
Robin has presented interactive lessons in several FS100 sessions that walk students
through the realities of a limited income. As a further service to these students, Robin
posted all of the materials in an online resources shell within Desire2Learn, now
Brightspace.
Cindy was chosen for demonstrating creativity and innovation in implementing a project.
She took the lead role in co-authoring HACC’s first iBooks textbook, a 137-page
interactive textbook used in the eVolution Academy. She also led the creation of HACC’s
six-week blended training using the Brightspace blended training shell.
This year’s awards represented a difficult choice, as the President’s Cabinet reviewed one
of the largest fields of nominees in recent years. Other nominees were: Ernest
Doerschuk, instructional programs technician at the Lancaster Campus; Matthew
Harris, assessment chair in Central Administration; Holly King, administrative office
specialist at the Lancaster Campus; Jerry Ozog, adjunct instructor at the PSC; Randy
Padfield, interim director of fire/Emergency Medical Services at the PSC; Perry
Pierich, fire training coordinator at the PSC; Rebecca Shoener, associate professor of
radiological technology at the Lancaster Campus; Hetal Thaker, English instructor at the
Lancaster Campus; and QiQuan Wang, coordinator of the Mobile Learning/Instruction
Center at the Harrisburg Campus.
I thank them all for their good work!
Cooper Student Center Update
Consulting firm the Armistead Group has recently completed a fundraising feasibility
study for HACC, recommending that the College and the HACC Foundation plan a
private sector, major gift campaign to include $8 million for Cooper Student Center.
6
Based on the Armistead Group’s report, the Board of Trustees will discuss the following
recommendations at its February meeting:
Engage students in the discussion about what is needed in the renewed or new
student center
Consider ALL possibilities
Explore the PSECU site and conduct a feasibility study for this building and real
estate
Provide a clear vision of why additional physical space may be necessary with the
increased emphasis on virtual learning
Investigate opportunities that the expiration of the Midtown 2 lease in 2022 may
present
Incorporate recent enrollment decline and debt service ratios
Budget Director Transition With the recent retirement of Kathy Green as the director of budgeting, Brenda Krebs,
senior fiscal analyst, has stepped in during the interim to assist with the upcoming fiscal
year 2015-16 budget process. Job descriptions and task lists are currently being
restructured within the Finance area, and the position will be posted following review by
the Office of Human Resources. YOUR Monthly Brand Update The Focus for Spring 2015 Marketing – The Integrated Marketing Communications
Department is hard at work building upon the new brand and the tactics used to
communicate to the College’s target
audiences. As the brand continues to build, the
department is responding to feedback and
changing the brand slightly to start with a
call to action. An example of a call to
action is: Attend HACC’s Open House or
Complete YOUR Degree at HACC. It tells the reader or recipient of the ad what to do. The
department also has expanded the color scheme on materials. By expanding the color base
to incorporate what is used on the HACC website, the College is providing consistency
among its communications and avoids having everything look the same. Additionally, the department has developed a robust spring 2015 marketing plan that
encompasses the goals, strategies, target audiences and tactics. The goals are to:
Increase awareness of HACC’s programs, initiatives and services
Educate prospective students of the value, outcomes and benefits of HACC
Improve communication to current students to increase enrollment
7
Using the input of the campus leaders, provost, associate provost and members of the Office
of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, the department will focus on
communicating key messages to junior and senior high school students, parents of current
students, current students, non-traditional students (age 25-34) and veterans for spring 2015.
Finally, as you continue to see more communications across the campuses and in the
communities, you will see students, alumni and employees highlighted in the
communications. It is important to tell HACC’s stories and show prospective students
what our current students and alumni are accomplishing. If you have not already done so,
please contribute to the story bank about your experience and tell students, alumni and
others to complete the story bank form.
Correct Use of Unit Names at the Public Safety Center
The public safety offerings of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, are
housed within the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center (PSC), a 12-acre complex
on the Harrisburg Campus. More than 30,000 of the region’s first responders and
healthcare workers are trained annually at the PSC. In 2012, the PSC added the Sen.
Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Complex. This 48,000-square-foot law enforcement
complex boasts a 25-lane indoor firing range, classrooms, a running track, weight room,
tactical building and driving pad. The complex currently hosts and caters to law
enforcement agencies across the commonwealth and beyond.
When referring to either of the two facilities, the following naming conventions should be
used:
The Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center (PSC) on first use, though “the”
is not capitalized if it does not start a sentence. On subsequent uses within the
same document, it can be shortened to “the PSC” or “the Public Safety Center.”
The Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Complex on first use, though “the”
is not capitalized if it does not start a sentence. On subsequent uses within the
same document, it can be shortened to “the Law Enforcement Complex.”
Please use the correct names in your materials about the PSC. You can also check
HACC’s Style Guide on myHACC, under Office of College Advancement and The
HACC Foundation.

credit (or the blame) for this policy, because it
was created before I was hired as president at
HACC.
There was some concern about how this policy
may adversely impact our student reporters and
newspapers. Because of this helpful feedback,
Linnie Carter (our vice president of college
advancement) recently met with two student
reporters, an advisor and a student affairs dean.
During the meeting, the five of them discussed the
policy, agreed to a process that will work for all
parties and committed to working together to
modify the policy.
If you have any questions or need additional
information, please contact Linnie at

mtvU Comes to HACC
MTV’s 24-hour college network, mtvU, is now broadcasting at HACC’s Harrisburg
Campus in Cooper Student Center and the Book Store, where students can view the
network on dedicated mtvU TVs. Music by emerging artists is the heart of mtvU. The
network also broadcasts high-quality student-produced content, original short-form
series, pro-social initiatives and features on many aspects of campus life.
Through programs like its partnership with Youth Venture to provide “mtvU Grants,” the
network promotes opportunities for students to make a positive impact in their
community and worldwide. One Emmy Award-winning mtvU program, “Half of Us,”
produced in partnership with The Jed Foundation, works to reduce the student suicide

rate by fighting the stigma surrounding mental health issues and providing resources
students can use to overcome depression. MtvU also won an Emmy for a program that
increased awareness of genocide taking place in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Broadcasting to more than 700 college campuses across the country, mtvU is the largest,
most comprehensive television network just for college students. Its best known
programs include the “mtvU Woodie Awards,”
honoring musicians, and “The Freshmen,” whose fans
choose which performer among five emerging artists
will be added to mtvU’s on-air rotation.
In the Emmy-nominated “Stand In,” internationally
known figures including Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel,
Madonna, Sting, Bill Gates, Rawandan President Paul
Kagame, Cameron Diaz and Kanye West, among
others, surprise students by visiting their classrooms to
teach for a day. The “mtvU ROTC Challenge,” a
competition among students at different schools,
emphasizes strength, leadership and mental challenges.
Phone Call Campaign Welcomes Each New Student
at Gettysburg Campus
The Gettysburg Campus started the fall semester with
the theme “All Students Matter” and, through a new
initiative, has been sharing that message with each new
student. The theme is rooted in research indicating that
the most powerful predictor of a student’s success is “mattering”: Students’ belief that
they each matter to the College and those they engage with at the College. One way the
campus is demonstrating to students how much they matter is with a “welcome” phone
call to every new student.
During the first two weeks of the semester, 31 staff, faculty, administrators and alumni
called 422 of the campus’s 648 new students. Most students reacted with surprise – many
could not believe that the call was simply to welcome them and check in – or gratitude, as
callers were able to answer questions and provide referrals. In return, many students shared
positive feedback related to individual faculty members and classes, and staff members
who had provided excellent service. One student even indicated that she was sending her
brother to HACC to take placement tests for the spring semester.
Serve Yourself at Avenue C in Lancaster
HACC’s Lancaster Campus has introduced a new food service concept in a self-serve
kiosk – Avenue C. The kiosk is located in the East Building lobby and is available to
students and employees anytime the building is open. A wide selection of meals, snacks
and beverages includes cold soft drinks, hot coffee, sandwiches, pizza, salads, fresh fruit
11
and Philly soft pretzels. The kiosk accepts payment by credit/debit card and cash for
purchasers who set up an account. Microwaves are provided to heat the food.
Gettysburg Grape Stomp Benefits the Helen Hauser Memorial Scholarship
Shannon Harvey, Gettysburg Campus vice president, went
toe-to-toe with Gettysburg College President Janet Morgan
Riggs in a battle of the juice during the Celebrity Grape
Stomp at the Gettysburg Wine and Music Festival on Sunday,
Sept. 7, 2014. Gettysburg College’s team won, filling about
half of its five-gallon bottle with juice to HACC’s one-third
bottle. The real winners, though, were HACC’s students.
Event proceeds benefit the Helen Hauser Memorial
Scholarship Endowment, which provides scholarships to
students enrolled in our viticulture/enology program.
New Lebanon Bookstore Hours
After careful review and assessment of Lebanon Campus bookstore sales, we have reduced
operating hours and eliminated the need for a full time bookstore manager at this location.
Effective Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, the new hours will be:
Monday – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Tuesday – 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Thursday – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
The bookstore will be closed Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jayne Walsh, bookstore manager, will oversee the daily operation for both the Lebanon
and Lancaster bookstores.
Kudos
To Tim Sanden, educational specialist in Workforce Development’s
Transportation and Logistics Unit, for providing excellent customer service under
an ongoing training contract with ABF Freight of Carlisle. An ABF representative
recently praised Tim’s and his team’s work: “ABF Carlisle would not be in the
position we are in reaching our road driver hiring target goals without this
partnership. You have successfully worked through equipment, student ability,
and staff issues to meet our demand and I appreciate everything you have done
and look forward to keeping this successful partnership moving forward. The
communication between your team and our team has been a key element in
making this work.”
