It has come to my attention that several people have phone numbers that have been disconnected. You may have gone from a land line to just a cell phone. You may also have moved. You must let us know about these changes. Please email me at [email protected] or call me at 321-255-4953 if you have changes. This is important also since we mail the newsletter to several of you. Also we need email addresses for those of you who might have email and not receive anything by email. Please email them to me. Thanks. Brevard County Chapter 6717 Sutro Heights Lane Viera, FL 32940 October 2017 President’s Message Summer is over, Hurricane Irma is behind us, as is Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I truly hope all of you made it through “Irma” without any major problems. We now have the opportunity to look ahead to new beginnings and new possibilities. As you know, our trip to the Foosaner Museum with lunch afterwards was cancelled, due to Irma but will be rescheduled in the future. We are now ready to begin our Meetings of the Month, which your Planning Committee worked so hard on all summer. October promises to be a very interesting month for Hadassah. Our meeting will be held at the Eau Gallie Library on Tuesday, October 17th, beginning at 9:30AM. As promised, you will not be sitting through all the reports and general discussion. You will have a handout letting you know the important facts. Beginning at 9:30AM, we will have refreshments and fashions from Bon Worth. This is a fundraiser for us as 10% of sales will go to Hadassah. At approximately 10:00AM, you will be given a chance to ask questions on any items in the handout, and the Hadassah Board Slate for 2018 will be presented. Beginning at 10:30AM, a speaker from Aging Matters will present some very interesting information. As mentioned in my article last month, we have some very fun and interesting events coming up: 1. Bunco will be held on Sunday, October 29th at the Schechter Community Center beginning at noon. 2. Fundraiser on October 24th at BJ’s Restaurant/ Brewhouse. All you have to do is present the BJ’s Fundraiser Flyer found in this newsletter to BJ’s on October 24th between 11AM and 9PM. Our chapter will earn 20% of total food and soft drink purchases for this one day only event. Remember, this is only good if you present the flyer. 3. On November 12th, the Taste of Jerusalem will be held at Wickham Park. Volunteers are needed to help make this event a success. 4. On Tuesday, November 14th, our Chapter will be going to the Ruth Funk Museum followed by lunch at Matt’s Casbah. Carpools will be arranged as parking is limited. I want to thank all of you for making Hadassah and, especially our Chapter, a success. Together we can make the future brighter and better for the world. Rose Schoenfeld President

~ Jewish Federation" OF BREVARD

Abraham's Harvest A Real Mitzvah

The Jewish Federation of Brevard, Inc. is sponsoring its 15th Annual Food Drive in conjunction with the Temples, Synagogues, Jewish Organizations, and Churches in our community. This food drive is called "Abraham's Harvest" and occurs between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

This is how Abraham' s Harvest works: • Publix Supermarkets has supplied the Federation with paper grocery bags. These bags will be available in the local Temples and at the Federation office. Please take a bag (or two) home from Rosh Hashanah services. • Fill the bag(s) with non-perishable food items, paper goods, personal hygiene products, and/or household supplies. • Return the filled bag(s) to your Temple/Synagogue at Yom Kippur services, or to the Federation office during normal business hours. The Federation holds all donated grocery store gift certificates for distribution to needy local Jewish families. The food and other items collected will stock the food pantry located at the Federation office, 210 E Hibiscus Blvd, for distribution to any needy families.

The Jewish Federation of Brevard, Inc. and those that are in need within our community are grateful to each and every one of you who fulfills this Mitzvah.

Hadassah's Head of Emergency Medicine Springs to Action at Bar Mitzvah

Dr. Jacob (Koby) Assaf, head of Emergency Medicine at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem, was at a family Bar Mitzvah in a Jerusalem hotel, when suddenly a 60-year-old man collapsed right next to him. “I was able to immediately identify that it was a heart-related issue and that he was about to lose consciousness,” recalls Dr. Assaf. “I began treating him and called Magen David Adom (MADA) to send an ambulance to transfer him to my Emergency Room.” Complicating matters, however, was the fact that the guest, after being given preliminary treatment in the ER, decided that he did not want to be admitted to a hospital ward. “Surprisingly,” relates Dr. Assaf, “the guest decided to return to the party, as he apparently felt better.” Dr. Assaf continues: “Unfortunately, that didn’t last for long, as he collapsed a second time. This time, however, his situation was more complex. As a result, we needed a mobile intensive care unit (MICU) ambulance to bring him once again to Hadassah Ein Kerem. I personally accompanied the guest in the ambulance. Following his initial tests in

the ER, he was admitted to the cardiology department, where he was cared for by the dedicated, professional, and caring staff. After a few days, he was discharged for home.” Thinking back on his rare ambulance ride, Dr. Assaf notes: “I generally don’t find myself in the back of an ambulance. My patients arrive at the ER after receiving first aid from the MADA paramedics. I was happy to witness first-hand the incredibly professional and personal care given by the MADA medical team. I have no doubt that their care helped stabilize the patient well before his arrival at Hadassah’s ER.”
