    2014 State of the

    Industry Survey

ASTD needs your organizational data for inclusion in the 2014 State of the Industry report. It is only because of your participation that ASTD is able to effectively measure and report critical learning and development industry metrics including investments, expenditures, practices, and outcomes, across industry types and organization sizes. ASTD Research handles participant data with strict confidence and sensitivity. The State of the Industry reports data in aggregates and averages that do not identify participating organizations or organization specific data. We understand that collecting this data may take time. For your reference, we have attached a PDF version of this survey to assist you in collecting the metrics. Deadline for completing survey: Monday, June 30, 2014

Thank you for your input! You may access the survey here.

Volunteer Spotlight A new section of our Chapter newsletter highlights a volunteer who has made a difference in our chapter and supports our mantra of going from “Good to Great”. The Oxford dictionary writes that a volunteer is one who “freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertakes a task”. Our chapter wants to recognize and

thank Joyce Bailey for her active participation and contributions to the Program Committee. Joyce has stepped in to help with brainstorming ideas, evaluations, introducing some of our speakers and creating a fun, positive atmosphere. Joyce’s enthusiasm at each of our monthly events is very evident, she greets chapter members, shares her interests in the topic being presented and ask questions during the program to stimulate conversation and learning. Her smile is hard to miss. Joyce is an independent Learning & Development facilitator with Essential Elements and has been a chapter member since March 2013. Thank you, Joyce, for volunteering in making our chapter great!

President's Message continued from above ... … want your input as to the chapter’s future. National ASTD is changing as well and we will have work to do to make this transition successful for our Chapter and our profession. A project plan will be created and implemented to ensure a successful transition, from now through the coming year. There will be plenty of opportunity to volunteer and help out the project. The Chapter Board members will keep everyone informed with timely, accurate and easy accessible communications. June 17th at the Portland Country Club will round out of yearly programs. Though we are coming to a close of our monthly chapter programs, we are really just taking a summer break. I want to thank Shirlie and her leadership along with the Program Committee members. This has been a year of great programs! We look forward to seeing everyone and new guests this September, please visit our website during the summer months for up-coming programs: http://maineastd.org/ Enjoy your summer months, wherever you may spend your vacation time! Cheers, Cheers, Sally Wilson

    Career Navigator

The ASTD Career Navigator will help you explore the career roles you can aspire to, the skills necessary to function effectively in each role, and the resources that are available to help build necessary skills. Based on the 2013 ASTD Competency Model,™ the Career Navigator will allow you to assess your current skills; after completing the tool, you will receive a report that shows how you rate against the target proficiencies needed in that position. Training activities will then be recommended to close any proficiency gaps. The ASTD Career Navigator is a benefit of membership in ASTD. Please note that to use the Career Navigator, you must log in to the site. http://www.astd.org/Communities-of-Practice/Career-Development/Career-Navigator

    New England ASTD

Conference: Please join Maine ASTD chapter members at the 2014 New England regional conference June 12/13 in Chelmsford, MA. Details: http://www.neastd.com/

Good-bye: Four years ago, I was told by my manager at Unum to get involved in the Maine ASTD. I was sitting at an ASTD breakfast meeting and Mike DiRibbio was asking for members to submit applications to be officers and contribute. I wrote up my application, got elected and told my manager that I had been elected as the Vice President of Registration. She looked at me and said, “I wanted you to present at a meeting, not become so involved”… And so my journey as an officer began. I did my two years, signed up for two more and now the time has come to step down and say thank you. Thank you to all of you that attend the breakfast meetings each month and who I got to greet and become to know. Thank you for the emails and calls for help with the website because through these situations I got to network and get to know each of you better. It has been a very fun journey with some work included and I have a network of new friends. To all of you, I say thank you for being so welcoming and pleasant to work with and serve. I look forward to the next few years enjoying breakfast chat with you. Thank you for this opportunity. I have truly been blessed. Adele LeBorgne

    The times they are a

    changing… ASTD has a

    new name and look!

The training and development field has changed and grown dramatically since ASTD was founded 71 years ago. It is time for the American Society for Training & Development to take the next step in reflecting and supporting the global nature, tremendous diversity, influence, and impact of this profession. We are changing our name from the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) to the Association for Talent Development (ATD). What does the phrase talent development mean? Talent development encompasses the breadth and depth of the profession and includes all of the Areas of Expertise you see reflected in our professional Competency Model, and more. When will this change happen and how long will it take? ASTD announced this change on May 6, 2014. ASTD, its local chapters, and international partners will complete a full transition of our products, services, and offerings to the new name during the next year. Why the change? Since ASTD was founded in 1943, the profession has transformed dramatically. T&D professionals’ roles are much broader and deeper than ever before. They are responsible for a wider scope,

have a greater impact on individuals and the organizations they serve, and have become a critical business partner. What has not changed in 71 years is the purpose of the field — to develop people: their knowledge, skills, and capabilities. ASTD is changing to demonstrate how this profession’s work — and the impact that our members and customers have — stretches beyond training. Our Maine Chapter is excited about this change and we look forward to partnering with you on this journey. Our Chapter is in the process of working closely with National ATD to create a timeline when our chapter brand will change over that will offer a smooth and seamless transition. We will continue to communicate our efforts toward our goal of a full transition within a year.
