ast month BOMA hosted theannual Bay Area EARTH AwardsLuncheon. What started almost a
decade ago as a recycling awardsprogram has evolved into a joint effortbetween BOMA San Francisco and BOMAOakland/East Bay to celebratethe best in sustainable buildingpractices.
As I watched the short filmshighlighting the outstandingsustainable operating practicesof the finalists in each category,I was reminded that each of uscan make small changes thatdramatically affect the overalloperation. Whether you’re abuilding owner, operator, services professional or tenant, there is a role for you to play increating these efficiencies. I encourage allmembers to utilize the resources availablethrough membership to maximize themanagement of resources in your buildingor tenant space. If you weren’t able toattend the EARTH Awards Luncheon, Irecommend that you view the films onBOMA’s website (www.bomasf.org) andfind out how the winners are achievingsuch impressive results.
Our efforts to achieve and maintain thehighest levels of sustainability are, ofcourse, ongoing. BOMA San Francisco isdedicated to continuing to provide theleadership to keep our city and our regionamong the greenest anywhere in the
world. We conduct educationalprograms that cover everyaspect of buildingsustainability. A Half Century of BOMA MemoriesBy Ray Nann
n the summer of 1957, I became the assistant buildingmanager for the Robert Dollar Building at 311California St. The building manager at that time was
Hugh Brittan, a past president of BOMA San Francisco(1940-41). He had the distinct honor of having thereputation of being “The Dean of the BuildingManagers.” Mr. Brittan took me to my first BOMAmeeting at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, where I metElmer Johnson. I guess at that time I was the youngestmember of BOMA.
My first exposure to downtown was in 1951 when Ijoined the Robert Dollar Company as the office boy. Iremember when the Crown Zellerbach Building (1 BushSt.) was under construction and The Equitable Building(100 Montgomery St.) with its pile driving causing somuch noise.
During the early years of management (1957 throughthe 1960s) as a member of BOMA, I had the opportunityto meet many of the old-time building managers whotook me under their wings. If I had a problem andneeded answers, I could call them and they wereextremely helpful in solving my problems. I became thebuilding manager in 1960.
During the 1960s and 1970s life as a building managerwas not as complicated as it is today. Getting buildingpermits was not difficult in those days. You could callthe building inspector, and he would come down andlook over the project and in most cases would tell you tostart immediately. The paperwork would follow later.Compare this to today.
In those early days, the so-called Financial Districtboundaries were Battery Street to California Street toKearny Street to Market Street. When the Standard Oil(now Chevron) Building and the International Building(601 California St.) were built, the boundaries werebroken.
One of the major challenges the industry faced was thehigh-rise fire and life safety issues, which includedelevator recall and elevator lobby containment. Shortlyafter, fire sprinkler systems became mandatory.
During my five-plus decades of involvement in BOMASan Francisco and BOMA International, attendance atvarious meetings and conferences were my educationaltools to assist me in becoming a successful andprofessional building manager. My advice to a youngprofessional entering the field today is to get active inBOMA, participate, get involved in committee work, utilize social events and get to know your counterparts.
San Francisco has become the West Coast headquartersfor the building industry and should continue itsgrowth in the 21st century. I cannot be more proud ofmy contributions to advance the programs of BOMASan Francisco.
Happy 100th Birthday!
