Katherine Ewing, President Unit 505 Board of Directors
The Unit Board met before the Unit game on March 12, 2017. Many items were discussed at this meeting.
SPRING SECTIONAL: The biggest item is our May Sectional. Unfortunately, the May
Sectional on May 6/7, 2017, will be only two days. Our new site had a booking on Friday, which had been booked over a year before we requested dates in May, September and December for our Sectionals for the next three years. After this May Sectional all the rest will be our usual three days. Replacing the usual Friday schedule, will be our speaker at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday for the I/N players. Also, the 2 session, single session and Non Life Master sessions will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. If you normally play on Friday please mark your calendars now for Saturday. See the Sectional Flyer in this newsletter for more details.
MARCH UNIT GAME: After the Unit Board meeting the Unit Game was held with 10
tables. Congratulations to all of you who won points at this game. The winners were: 1st Overall Ben and Betty Miller 2nd Overall Albert Evans and Judee Browning 3rd Overall Denise Morgan and David Russell
APRIL UNIT GAME: will be April 9, 2017 at the Sacramento Bridge Center.
NLM SECTIONAL: People are still talking about the Non-Life Master Sectional which
we held in February of this year and what a good time they had. The Unit Board wants you to know there will be another one soon, in August or September. Watch for more details soon. In the future we hope to schedule three per year.
NEW BOARD MEMBER: Sally Wheeler-Valine has been named to serve out the term
of Maurie Studin who resigned for personal reasons. Sally will also continue as our D21 Representative.
The Unit Board members are always open to your thoughts so please feel free to approach any of us if we may be of help to you.
April showers bring May flowers, so come play bridge and stay dry at your local bridge club. See you at the bridge table, Katherine

*4-4-3-2, 5-3-3-2 and 5-4-3-1
are the most common distributional patterns, 50% of all
*add 4-3-3-3 and 5-4-2-2
and you are up to 71%
*If you are missing 6 cards in a suit
they will break 3-3 36% of the time and 4-2 48% of the time
*If you are missing 5 cards in a suit
they will break 3-2 68% of the time and 4-1 28% of the time
*If you are missing 4 cards in a suit t
hey will break 2-2 40% of the time and 3-1 50% of the time
*If you are missing 3 cards in a suit
they will break 2-1 78% of the time and 3-0 22% of the time
*It all means an odd number will break evenly and an even number will
split unevenly.

This is last year’s report to give you more information: District 21 Charity Report 2016
by Jeff Hack
District 21 Charity Chair Every year District 21 allocates $5000 to charities.
Nominations are accepted between January 1 and July 4. This gives the charity chair enough time to research the charities and make the announcement of the accepted charities during the board meeting at the All-Western Championships Regional.
Although we have no formal requirements, we try to limit all selections to charities based in District 21. All charities must be a 501(c)(3) charity. The charities selected this year are:
Wind Youth Services Sacramento CA 95826 www. windyouth.org/ Share Food Pantry Concord CA 94519 www. sharepantry.org
Each charity was given $2500.
In late October District 21 found out that the ACBL had allocated us $30,000 to donate to charities that we select. Since the deadline was fast approaching the charity chair selected six charities to receive $5000 each. The charities selected are:
Valley Teen Ranch Fresno CA 93711 www.valleyteenranch.org Maryhouse Sacramento CA 95814 (a program of Loaves & Fishes)
www.sacloaves.org/programs/maryhouse/ Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties
www.shfb.org San Francisco-Marin Food Bank www.sfmfoodbank.org Food Bank of Northern Nevada (Reno) fbnn.org Ride To Walk Lincoln CA 95648 www.ridetowalk.org
This is your chance!
Nominate a charity for consideration by our Unit 505 Board. Each year donations are made to District-selected charities based on information submitted by
July 4th from Units. Contact Katherine Ewing at: [email protected]

Spring has arrived and the warm sunny days tend to call us away from the bridge table. But resist the temptation and keep those competitive skills at their peak for the upcoming tournaments in our general area. First of all, the Reno April Showers Sectional runs from Wed., Apr. 19 through Sun., Apr. 23, 2017. It will be held at the Nugget Hotel in Sparks, NV, and will include daily stratified sessions for Non-Life Masters. Then in May, there will be several excellent opportunities for beginning and intermediate players to gain experience and possibly accumulate some silver MPs. Our local spring sectional tournament will be held at the La Sierra Commu-nity Center in Carmichael on Sat., May 6nd and Sunday, May 7th. The tournament offers 199er games during the sessions on Saturday and the Swiss Teams game on Sunday. In addition, our District 21 will conduct its ACBL STaC games (Sectional Tournaments at Clubs) during the week of May 8-14, 2017. Lastly, it’s time to get Sacramento Regional Tournament on your calendar. That tournament will again be held at the Sacramento DoubleTree Hotel from Mon., May 29 through Sun., June 4, 2017. Complete information for each of these tournaments is available on the ACBL website (www.acbl.org/tournaments/). The SCLH duplicate bridge club is an invitational club and games are open to residents of Sun City Lincoln Hills and their invited guests. Our games are played in the Kilaga Springs Lodge on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm (also includes a 199er section), Fridays at 5:00 pm, and Saturdays at 12:30 pm (also includes a 299er section). Table fees are $2.00 per per-son for members and nonmember residents for their first three games. The fee for a non-resident invited guest is $5.00. If you need a bridge partner for any of the open games, call Barbara Dorf (434-8234), Squeak Conner (645-9085) or Lynne White (253-9882). For a partner in the Wednesday or Saturday limited games, call Sheila Ross (434-6165) or Lynne White (253-9882). For more information, visit the club web-site: www.bridgewebs.com/lincolnhills, or call club president Jim Collart (995-7233).
