President’s Message

Life is fi lled with many unexpected twists and turns to be sure. My husband and I were stunned to learn over the past few months that he is in liver failure and will need a liver transplant. I’ve decided to share some of my story with you, my colleagues, because this completely unexpected twist has brought me in touch with our pro-fession and the health care system in ways that my life, which has been so blessed thus far, had not done before. We have experienced four hospitalizations in two facili-ties in the past two months, which is more than the two of us combined have had in 43 years of marriage. We have experienced nursing as only patients and families can, and I was inspired by what I saw.

Seasoned nurses seemed in short supply in comparison with the new, young nurses. They were integral, however in patiently and supportively mentor-ing and coaching their young colleagues. Many, many young nurses exuded high energy and enthusiasm for their work. Their critical thinking skills were a comfort as we engaged in conversations about the very complicated patho-physiology we are dealing with. It was evident they were monitoring and concerned about all the right things. I spent 12-hour days with them, and our opportunities to talk about all things nursing were boundless. So many of them have their sights on their next degree and their area of practice interest. Many of them sported pins that signifi ed their status as a certifi ed nurse and were pleased when I noticed and congratulated them. Nurses were leaders in the system of care...confi dently and competently directing daily interprofes-sional rounds in both of the facilities and ensuring their patients’ questions and needs were addressed. Nurses consistently and respectfully engaged pa-tient and family in conversations about the plan of care and treatment goals. It was truly heartwarming for me to experience how a vision of professional nursing practice is being translated at the point of care. As someone who now must literally entrust the life of someone I dearly love to the care of others, it was comforting, as well.

professional governance for nearly 40 years, it is so clear to me now that the very important work we do is creating the environment that supports clinical excellence at the point of care. Those of us who choose the path of management shape a shared vision of professional nursing in our entities. We manage the resourc-es needed to do the work and the resource decisions we make enable (or impede) excellence at the point of care.

The work of management in the health care system is integral to the clinical professionals’ ability to manage outcomes at the point of care. As individual managers, and collectively through WONE, we can and should be inspired by the practice of our colleagues at the point of care. Our commitment to utilize the best evi-dence to ensure that our decisions prepare and position them to do their best work must be unwavering. I thank you for all you contribute and am grateful for the leadership that results in the kind of care that my husband and I have received.
