Greetings from the Illinois Caddyshack!
Golf opportunities this winter have been few and far between. As spring
returns and the snowbirds head back north, we witness the rebirth of the
land and find new hope for warmer weather. It’s time to clean up the clubs and head back to the
Caddyshack!
The weather in New Orleans for the National Winter Meeting was not great by Louisiana standards,
but was much better than what we were getting at home. We did get one round in. The Illinois
Senate was recognized as an Outstanding Road Runner State. Great job, Chris Curtis #35440!
We had a nice size group in attendance. Susie Colbert-Curtis #73137 and her promotion skills
played a large part in that.
Thank you to the Northeast, South Central and Gateway for covering the meals and snacks at the
winter meeting in Decatur. I also need to thank Lynne McGill #70364, Kathy Crick #71017,
and Joanne Rinaldo #71700 for all their efforts in setting up and tearing down the hospitality
room. Thank you Judson DeVore #65005, for getting the Lotto completed. Thank you Yvonne
Agnello-Adams #72530 and Dan Adams #68303, for working so hard work in running a
successful Silent Auction. It was great to see so many of our new members in attendance. Monty
Schroeder #62203 also ran a very successful Poker event that weekend. Thanks to all of our
chairmen for all of your dedication to the Illinois Senate.
The TN Mini National in Pigeon Forge was a great opportunity for fellowship and also was well
attended by Illinois. The only “damper” on the weekend was again the weather. You could have
floated an Ark in front of the hotel.
The Region V Spring Fling in Fairborn, Ohio was also well attended by the Illinois Travel Crew.
Marilyn Burton #55106 put together an extremely touching Memorial Service. Region V Vice-
President Vicky Dempsey #58206 threw a great party weekend. Our Vice-President for next
year will be Will Chester #63037 of Kentucky. Joe Callison #71418 of Ohio received the
“Stump Award” as The Outstanding State President in Region V. It was very well deserved!
Monty Schroeder #62203 is looking for volunteers to work at our last Poker Night in the
Champaign-Urbana area. The location is the Elks Lodge at 903 N. Dunlap Ave., in Savoy. The date
is April 20. They normally run 3 shifts of about 4-5 hours each between 11:30 am and 1:30 am.
Please let Monty know if you are able to help.
I hope that many of you will attend the TOYP and Hall of Fame Awards at the May 3-5 meeting in
Springfield. Gary Hongsermeier #39708 (posthumously) and Mary Ann Gouveia Riggs
#52696 will be inducted into the Illinois Jaycees Hall of Fame. It would be great to have a strong
show of support for the Hall of Fame ceremony and the Illinois Jaycees.
We have three months left in this Senate year. It took a great deal of hard work to be honored
with a Senatorship. Receiving a Senatorship should not be the end of the story; it should be the
beginning of a new chapter. Please take the time to invite one of our less active Senators to get
back involved with our group. We need them, and they will appreciate that you cared enough to
ask.
See you all in Springfield and then on to Savoy!

Senators, we had a great Winter meeting with the Illinois Jaycees
in Decatur. Thank you to Sandi Harpstrite #65882 and her crew
for their hospitality. Hope to see everyone in Springfield in May.
It was great to have four Freshman Senators at the toast on Friday
night as we welcomed Kevin Ogden #68671, Ben Eberwein
#77127, Arron McCurley #75866, and Jason Foltyn #77749 to the Illinois Senate
family. Freshman Senators, please get with Joanne Rinaldo #71700 (Freshman
Senator/First Timers Senate Chairman) and find out what you are missing out on. It
would be great to see a bunch of new Senators at the spring meeting in Springfield in
May.
Marilyn Burton #55106 is the Return the Favor chairman for the Illinois Senate.
Please keep track of the hours that you have been out helping Jaycee chapters and get
them sent in to Marilyn so that she can get it recorded and sent in to National. Please
send your info to [email protected].
Ray Ainslie #44136 is our Historian Chairman again this year. As always, he enlightened us with more interesting
tidbits of information. He is also the chairman for Future Directions and he and his committee are working very hard to
provide the Senate with information to pursue to help bridge the gap between the Senate and the Jaycees. If you have
any ideas to pass along, please contact Ray at [email protected].
Beverly Olson #42473 and her committee are busy preparing for the Summer Picnic in Savoy in July of 2019. Hopefully
everyone will be able to join us then. There will be more information to follow.

I am also searching for anyone interested in stepping up next year and helping out as a chairman or helping in any other

questions are: a western, boxing gloves and Coke, Fresca, and Perrier. Fore!

Lotto Results!
Thank you to everyone who purchased an Illinois JCI Senate Lotto Raffle ticket this year! We sold a total of 326 tickets
and had 13 winners. One very lucky winner had their number drawn twice, so that we actually had 12 different winners.
A profit of $980 was raised for the Illinois Senate. Again, thanks to everyone who participated and good luck next year!

What a great winter GA and excellent hospitality! We kicked off the coffee bar, which seemed tobe a big hit, especially Saturday morning! The coffee bar includes coffee with many assortedcreamers and sugar free creamers, hot chocolate and hot tea.

Susie has done an excellent job keeping everyone informed through the Senate E-News. Upcoming eventsinclude Region IV Calabash Bash, which I am attending for the first time. I am just starting to attend some of these outof state events. If you are new, like me, and interested in traveling, let me know. I can’t wait to meet all of the newpeople!

•Brian Frieze, 32, Springfield, IL for Business, economic, and/or entrepreneurial accomplishment. Frieze is founder and
president of Sangamon Reclaimed which handcrafts quality furniture from reclaimed wood.
•Sara T. Ghadiri, 29, Chicago, IL for Political, legal, and/or governmental affairs. Ghadiri is an attorney at Chapman and
Cutler, LLP who handles pro bono cases, and led a change to IL Law that allowed survivors of domestic violence to seek
safety related waivers to the publication and public record requirements for legal name changes.
•Lucinda J. Hurt, 38, Aroma Park, IL for Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. She volunteers as director of Wesley
United Methodist Church’s food pantry. She works as a Community Planner for Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging.
•Nicole Lanahan, 39, Collinsville, IL for Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. Lanahan is Executive Director of Got
Your Six Support Dogs which provides specialized service dogs to veterans and first-responders suffering from
post-traumatic stress disorder and/or sexual trauma.
•Nicole Musumeci, 37, Champaign, IL, for Contribution to children, world peace, and/or human rights. Musumeci is
executive director of Prosperity Gardens which is dedicated to cultivating healthy communities by providing education,
employment and collaboration opportunities through neighborhood farming.
•Salvo Rodriquez, 36, Champaign, IL for Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. Rodriquez is Director of New Business
at United Way of Champaign County. He is a member of Champaign West Rotary and other organizations.
•Janet Scheller, 34, Hamel, IL for Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. Scheller is Founder and Executive Director of
Allison's Angel Gowns Inc. which donates gowns made from wedding dresses to grieving parents.
•Stacey Skrysak, 38, Springfield, IL for Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. Skrysak is a Television News Anchor at
WICS and co-founder of Triple Heart Foundation which provides books to parents with children in neonatal intensive care
units.
•Ashley Swip, 39, Collinsville, IL for Humanitarian and/or voluntary leadership. Swip is a teacher and Founder of 3 Little
Birds 4 Life which provides hope and happiness by granting wishes to adult cancer patients.

5. Future Directions: Ray Ainslie #44136 1) Recommendations were made to make changes in the structure of this
committee – Article 17 of Bylaws. 2) Committee feels that Illinois needs to take a position on the national issue of Dual Membership.
3) Committee feels that items of a “sensitive nature” need to be made to a closed session, i.e. only Illinois members. 4) Committee
feels that our membership needs to be encouraged to run for office. 5) The Future Directions Committee moves to request from the
Illinois JCI Senate membership permission to proceed forward in planning and arranging “The Gathering of Eagles,” as a Return the
Favor training project in the year of 2019-2020, with a budget of $1000.
Motion by Norm Hoffman #25676, 2nd by Robbie Johnston #51099. Discussion followed, talking about an all-day training at the
Starved Rock facilities, open to all Illinois Jaycees. This vote is for permission to set up the training and present it for next year’s
budget. Motion passed.

Attached is a copy of the 2nd Quarter 2018-2019 financial statement that was approved at the
winter meeting at Decatur.
I would like to give a shout out to Yvonne Agnello-Adams #72530 for all the time and energy
spent as the chairman of the Silent Auction. I would also like to thank everyone that donated items
to the auction or supported it in any way.
The Lotto Raffle is now history; we had 13 winners this year. I want to thank Judson DeVore #65005 for being the
chairman of this project. Also, thank you to everyone that sold or purchased tickets.
By the time you read this, the third Poker Game will be completed. Thank you to Monty Schroeder #62203 for chairing
this major fundraiser for us. There is one more date that we are running, April 20th. Please contact Monty if you can help
out. The time is the same each event from 12pm to 1am. We will need our volunteers there from 11:30am to 1:20am.
The Illinois JCI Senate Spring meeting will be held in Springfield in conjunction with the Illinois Jaycees’ TOYP/GA
meeting, May 3-5, 2019 at the Wyndham City Centre. The registration can be found in this issue of Forum.
The next Bubba Golf Outing will be June 29.
It was an honor to have our own JCI USA President Tricia Buehne #69433 speak at our IL Senate Meeting in Decatur.
Tricia spoke of the 100th Anniversary of US JCI that is coming up in 2020 called “Celebration of the Century”.
It was also our pleasure to have 88th JCI Illinois President Jared Koester present at the meeting in Decatur. He spoke
about “Energizing Illinois”.
At the Illinois Jaycee’s banquet in Decatur in February, 87th JCI Illinois President Vanessa Birchler #74430 presented
The Outstanding Senator of 2018 award to "The New Baden Jaycee Senators": Wayne Kiefer #36498, Dave Rudy

My name is Judson DeVore #65005 and I am running for the position of 2019 - 2020 Management Vice President. I
have held the positions of South Central Senate RD, Senate Hospitality Chairman, and have been on the Committees for
two separate Picnics. Currently, I am serving on the Future Directions Committee and as this year's LOTTO Chairman. I
have been a member of the Senate for 15 years and feel that it is time for me to move up to the next level, and I am
asking for your support and vote for me as your next Management VP.

GOPHER DROPPINGS By Billy Baroo
There wasn’t much to dig up at the Illinois Senate Winter Meeting in February. Billy Baroo, the IllinoisJCI Senate mascot, didn’t know if it was the weather or whether there weren’t enough people there tocreate any divots.
The uniclap “slackers” didn’t do a very good job at this meeting as one of the instigators had to leave
early to work poker.
Lori S. and Donna B. need to come around more so people can get the right name with the right person.
There were 4 new senators at the midnight toast which was held at 11:00 p.m.
In Pigeon Forge Gerry Moore was talking with our group about his trips to New Zealand and Susie asked if he flew or drove.It was a tough crowd and everyone laughed immediately! Must have been a blonde moment?
So whether it is for our gopher, or his predecessor, Linc, someone needs to fling it so he can dig it up!
Regardless, you still should be careful not to step in it!
I write this article a couple of days before attending the U.S. Region 5 Meeting in Dayton, Ohio and five days before thenext step in life's adventures, the replacement of my knee on March 19th. The region is, of course, doing well and wecontinue to provide leadership at the State and National levels. Unfortunately, my other obligations, such as being theAmbassador to Europe, have made it impossible for me to attend recent meetings.
The travelling will continue and Maxine #68012 and I will be off to France in early May for three weeks to attend theEuropean Senate Meeting in Lyon, France. While we are there we will be taking a Viking River Cruise through Provence.We will then be travelling to Portland, Oregon for the U.S. Senate Annual Meeting followed by a cruise with American CruiseLines to Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Illinois Picnic in Savoy and hope we will have a great turnout from the PrairielandRegion. Go on the Illinois Senate website for more details. In future planning we will be in Kansas City, Missouri for theU.S. Senate Fall Board meeting and then in November off to the World Congress in Tallin, Estonia. Life is good, but pleasekeep involved and help the Region find new and invigorating membership for the Illinois Senate.
PRAIRIELAND REGIONRuss Cooper #4638 - [email protected]
On an spring Saturday morning, many years ago, three young men in an old pickup truck cruised slowly down aresidential street searching for the address that was scratched on a sheet of paper. The driver was a mechanic, and hispartners were an engineer and a banker, all members of the local Jaycee Chapter. Their mission was to fill a child's sand-box with some of the sand that was currently piled in the truck. Upon locating the desired address, one of the men rangthe door bell, while the others proceeded to load wheelbarrows with some of the sand for delivery to a child's emptybackyard sandbox. With the suggested donation of $2 per load in hand and the box filled, they moved up the street to thenext address on the list. Some hours, and several truckloads of sand later they met up with other similar crews, who hadbeen delivering sand that day, to make sure that all deliveries were completed, leaving a number of happy children in theircommunities able to enjoy sandbox play for the summer.
Changing the world starts small, like bringing a smile to the face of a child.
The Jaycees used a simple slogan in the late 60's, “Do Something”. That pretty much sums up both the Jaycees, the Senateand life in general. There are many needs, small and large, and each of us carries an obligation to do somethingthroughout our lives to meet some of them, not wait until “they” take care of things.
After all, We believe “that service to humanity is the best work of life”.
Please note: The above somewhat generic tale is based upon real events that occurred in the early 70's throughout Illinoisand many other states.
Some points about the story:1. Of course it was an old truck, if it was a truck at all, sometimes an old trailer pulled by the family car. Most of us
couldn't afford any truck not required for work, unlike the present day!2. Nine times out of ten the guy handling the money was the banker! 3. The sand was bulk, loaded with an end loader, or dumped from a silo at a construction yard, no little bags of “safety
sand” from a home store!4. Sometimes we would have a few old tractor tires to contain the sand, at an additional charge of $5.5. This was not a big money maker. Only if we could get the sand and tires donated did we clear anything. It was simply
a community need recognized and being met.6. Often, the meet up place at day's end was a local tavern. 7. Today, many mothers would not allow their children to play in messy sand contained in an old tire in the back yard!

Greetings from YOUR Illinois Jaycees! First, let me say how thankful the Jaycees’ membership and organization is for yourcontinued support and dedication to the Jaycee movement. I have met and befriended Jaycees from throughout the USduring my Jaycee career, and I can say without hesitation that our state is one of the strongest in the country. Our Senatorsplay a pivotal role in the overall strength of our organization.
My theme this year is Jaycees Energizing Illinois, and I am placing a particular focus on Jaycee chapters working towardsimproving the parks in their communities. I am writing to ask you, as a Jaycee Senator, to reach out to your respectivechapters with advice on how they can further that goal. Whether it’s an idea for a fundraiser, or stories on how the Jayceessupported the parks system in years past, the catalog of information stored in the minds of Illinois Senators is invaluableto our members. Please share your thoughts and memories with us. We are all a product of those that came before us,and having achieved the rank of Jaycee Senator, you have proven yourself as a person all Jaycees should listen to.

It was the late 1960’s and May Company was building a new shopping mall near the intersection of
the newly opened Interstate 64 and Illinois Route 159. Their hope was that St. Clair Square Mall
would become a major shopping destination for all of southern Illinois. In 1969, the land
surrounding St. Clair Square Mall was incorporated as the City of Fairview Heights. The following year,
the O’Fallon Jaycees, led by Del Lurtz #15040 and Bill Sharp, extended a Jaycee chapter into the
newly incorporated community. Twenty-eight young men became the charter members of the
Fairview Heights Jaycees. Most of these men were in their twenties. One was different. His name
was Ed Townsend. Ed was already in his thirties and almost too old to join the organization. He
quickly became a chapter leader, a mentor, a big brother to some and a father figure to others. His
hard work and dedication to the Jaycees led to him to be recognized as the chapter’s first JCI Senator (Senator #19490).
The Illinois Senate opened a new door to Ed. He took to the Senate organization as he did everything, full speed ahead,
with the enthusiasm of a child on a sugar high. A few years later, the Fairview Heights Jaycees awarded me a Senatorship.
Ed pulled me into the Illinois Senate and forced me to get involved as he had. Ed became the 17th President of the Illinois
Senate in 1983. The Illinois Senate grew to over 200 Life Members that year. It was also the first year for the
Illinois/Missouri hospitality social held in conjunction with the Illinois vs. Missouri basketball game held in St. Louis.
There truly must be something magical about the Jaycees. So many of the young men that joinedthe Fairview Heights Jaycees in the 1970’s became lifelong friends. Our children grew up together,we partied together, we fished together and we grew old together. In those later years, Ed joined theFairview Heights Elk’s Lodge #664 and, of course, pulled his old Jaycee friends into that organization.I’m sure the Elks didn’t know what hit them. Ed immersed himself in everything they had to offer,which led to him be named Elk of the Year in 2012.
On December 17, 2018, Ed Townsend passed away. Ed is survived by his wife, Norma, his son, Steve,his two daughters, Lisa and Linda, and seven grandchildren. 2018 was an awful year for the IllinoisSenate organization. We lost so many leaders of our organization and I lost some great friends, butnone more than Ed. He was my best friend for almost 50 years. Every day, I half expect the phoneto ring and find Ed on the line telling me about the next project we are going to be working on. Thephone doesn’t ring and I miss him every day.

I hope you did not forget how important it is to document your time spent in Return the Favor activities in support ofJaycees. I extended the deadline to May 31st. You still have time to complete the simple form for the 3rd trimester. Sendto me via email at [email protected] by midnight 5/31/19 so I can submit to National.
They are NOT allowing a catch-up time to submit documentation, so this is just for events during 3rd trimester (Dec. 1-May 31). Get credit for involvement at those wonderful holiday projects and all Jaycee events! As a reminder, this docu-mentation is for Senators over the Jaycee age.
Just download the RTF form from the US JCI Senate website or use the link to the form in E-blast, complete thedocumentation on the form, then attach the form via email to me. It really does not take long! If you are truly “low tech”,send me details including your name, date, what event, number of hours worked, travel time plus description of activity,your role and the impact. The last part is important when they make a determination of the Senator and State for theNational awards. RTF is more than “just working a project”. The focus is AIM and should be included in yourdocumentation: Action-Impact-Mentoring.
