Coordinator Details: Avish Rana (10177, [email protected] )

Shashank Shekhar (10673, [email protected])

Vision of the Group: The vision of the group is to involve students to contribute towards environment and sustainability through activities that

provides encouragement and motivation to the people. Our aim is also to make the campus energy efficient by decreasing the

electricity and food wastage. We want to encourage students to search for and discover alternative and renewable means of energy

for a better future.

Activities Done: Green Opus Current Progress:

Green Opus Phase I was conducted in the month of September 2012. In Phase I, the hostels were judged on the basis of reduction in energy consumption in each hall. Readings were taken three times during the month of September and currently calculations are underway to calculate the ‘effective reduction’ in the energy consumption in each hall after incorporating the hall scaling factor (HSF). The results of Phase I will be announced in December, before Phase II.

Future Plans: Green Opus Phase II will be conducted in January 2013. In the second phase, the halls will be judged on the basis of their

respective reduction in the mess food wastage and also the reduction in energy consumption. Along with these, the month long

event will include activities such as Quizzes, Poster designing, Environmental Awareness Video making and Case Study competitions.

The details of these events have been submitted in the Pre Conduction report for Green Opus 2012-13.

Guide to Green Living:

We are working on a guide to green living which will establish a few basic and abstract criteria for IIT KANPUR people to judge

themselves on the basis of their contribution to campus pollution, wastage and energy resources, help them improve upon it and

help them check their level of improvement. It would serve as the reference ‘book’ for the subject of improving the campus

environment and deal with the problem at an individual level, informing us of our duties while reminding us of the advantages we

derive from the institute. It will be the “CONSTITUTION” for “ENVIRONMENT SUSTAINABILITY”!!!

We have planned to release it with the final Green Opus results.

Gymkhana Golden Jubilee Solar Tree

Current Progress:

We have been working on developing a solar tree to be installed in the campus. Prof S S K Iyer from the department of

Electrical Engineering is guiding us. A solar tree is a tree shaped structure which has solar panels attached to on the top which

generate electricity. This tree will be the first ever to be designed by a student’s group. We have already completed the preliminary

ground work required and have finalized the design. We are now working with some people from the Design Department to make

refinements in our original design to add greater aesthetic appeal to it.

The tree will consist of 12 solar panels generating a total of approximately 200W of electricity. Lights would be attached on

the solar tree and would draw their power entirely from batteries charged by the solar panels on the solar tree.

Future Plans:

Once the design is finalized in next week, orders will be placed for the various parts and the solar panels, batteries, etc. by

the end of November. We will be commencing with the assembly of the solar tree in the winter vacations in December.

GLDC

1st Talk A Workshop on Self – Confidence, Determination, Courage - Leadership Skills was organized on Sept 24, 2012 by the GLD

Club of the Students Gymkhana for the welfare of the students. The workshop was conducted by Sr. Savitri who is an

educator and has dedicated her life to serve others and inspire values in Life for a better society. At present she is a

senior faculty of PG Degree and Diploma Courses in Values and Spirituality & Values in Management which is run by the

Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, Mt. Abu in collaboration with the Anna Malai University, Tamil Nadu. The

workshop started with the Welcome address and intro of the speaker. Dean of Students Affair, Prof. AK Ghosh

welcomed the speaker with a Bouquet and encouraged the students to enlighten themselves in this area and

understand the difference between a good person and good personality.

The mood of workshop was set by a motivating song which was played at the beginning of the session. This was

followed by a multimedia presentation by the speaker which highlighted the distinct qualities of Confidence,

Determination and Courage. Confidence has to do with the ability to listen in to the voice of inner conscience and put

that into action. Determination is about the will to do a particular task and courage has to do with overcoming fear and

other obstacles to reach our goals. Building self-respect, good company, good literature, practicing meditation, positive

thinking were highlighted some of the key methods on how to inculcate these values in our day to day life.

Sr. Savitri highlighted these aspects with suitable examples from day to day life and her own life experiences. Interaction

with the students also cleared many of the doubts which students had about these Leadership Values. The practical

difficulties like how to overcome failures and improve a really low CGPA were discussed and new directions were

sought. The workshop ended with a highlight on the dynamic interplay of Mind, Intellect and Sanskar/Personality and

how to work on the self to overcome addictions or wrong habits.

2nd talk A seminar on “Make Mind Your Best Friend” was organized at 1100Hrs to 1230 Hrs on Oct 22, 2012 by Gymkhana

Lectures and Discussions Club (GLDC) in L-16 (LHC). The seminar was conducted by the articulate speaker E. V.

Swaminathan.

The Programme started with an inspiring song which was sung by BK Avinash. This was followed by a multimedia

presentation by the speaker which highlighted the distinct qualities of MIND. In the education system of Engineering and

Management students are taught to effectively manage men, material, money, machinery and methodology. It is

basically the optimum use of resources. But all these resources can only be managed when we understand to manage

the most important resource – MIND. The different functions of mind were articulately represented in an abbreviation

as TEAM i.e. Thoughts, Emotions, Attitude, and Memories. It was emphasized to understand MIND and to develop a

strong, powerful and a happy mind to manage Professional / Personal / Interpersonal challenges and also to become

emotionally intelligent. The environment was charged many times by clapping by audience during the talk.

Many questions were asked by students during the interaction session of the progremme. These questions include: how

to overcome anger? How to handle fear? How to keep mind stable during panic situations? The question about general

perception that practicing meditation leads to seclusion which, in turn detaches a person from his/her family

responsibilities. All the questions were answered by the speaker articulately. The feedback about the programme was

also conducted from audience.

Page 11: Presidential Council - Home | Students' Gymkhana, IIT …students.iitk.ac.in/ss/home/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/...Presidential Council IIT Kanpur Mid Term Report 2012 October 2012

Programme ended with a session on Raj Yog Meditation. The speaker was welcomed by Mr. Utpal Sharma, Acting

President Students’ Gymabhana and a token of remembrance was given to speaker by Prof. D. P. Mishra. The

classes, 20 for 6-10th and Rs. 30 for class 11th and 12th. Also, kids with attendance more than 90% will be exempted from this fee.

The purpose of this fee is to increase the concern of parents about their kids to attend the classes here and thus raising attendance

of kids.

Future Plans: 1. Arrange regular health talks, discussions and Health camps during each semester to keep kids aware about the health issues

and their cure.

2. Distribution of a kit to kids which would be useful in their studies. The details of this kit are as follows:
