DEL PASO COUNTRY CLUB ~ SERVING GREAT TRADITIONS . . . YESTERDAY, TODAY & TOMORROW
The Del PasoanNovember 2016
Volume 17, Number 11
PRESIDENTIALLY SPEAKINGGary Galster, President
By the time you receive this newsletter you may have already heard that our General Manager, Bob Kunz, offered his resignation to pursue another opportunity. He will be moving to Colorado to guide a relatively new organization towards their desired objective to become a championship caliber club. Having steered Del Paso through a similar journey, his resume was clearly at the top of the list for such an opportunity! We are incredibly happy for him and wish Bob and his family all the very best.
Bob came into the General Manager role at Del Paso during a time of extreme financial pressure and uncertainty. I am convinced that without Bob’s leadership during the Great Recession, our club could easily have slipped into dire times. He was instrumental in bringing Del Paso our own national championship, which received outstanding accolades. It has extended our reputation as a Championship caliber club. Who can’t be proud of that? The list of advancements, changes and enhancements to improve our club is too numerous to mention. But his impact will be felt for many years to come.
During his tenure, Bob successfully guided Del Paso through difficult times and built an excellent team. His discipline and work ethic are great attributes, and he’s attracted a team of department heads that show similar characteristics. Each of the department heads have been engaged and are collaborating to make this transition as smooth as possible. Minimal disruption to a club’s operations is a result of strong leadership. Those members who have worked with Bob know that his leadership, passion and integrity are phenomenal. On behalf of all members and employees, we are grateful for his leadership and contributions to Del Paso. Bob’s last official day will be November 30th.
So what’s next? The Board has initiated the formation of an ad-hoc search committee to conduct a search and make recommendations to the Board for a new General Manager. The Search Committee will be led by Dan Spector, and comprised of the Executive Committee and some Proprietary Members. The Board will engage the services of an executive search professional who specializes in the placement of private club executives. The executive search professional will work with the ad-hoc committee and the Board to conduct a nationwide search for a suitable replacement for Bob.
I’ve previously stated that one of my main objectives is transparency. To that end, it is our intention to provide ample communication on the status of this process. If you have any questions, contact myself or members of the Board. We are here to serve!

We are pleased to announce that Del Paso Country Club’s mobile app is ready for down load! The app has been designed for our club which means it is optimized for smartphones and some items will run faster when compared to our mobile website. Also the app has some great features that are not available on the mobile website, for example one time log-in. Once you log-in, you will remain logged in!
From the app you will be able to make reservations, view the club calendar, order food from the café, access the member directory, view and pay your statement, post your GHIN score and more. You will still need to use the website to access club documents and the monthly newsletter.
Below are the download instructions for mobile devices:
iPhone download instructions1. Open the App Store App on your iPhone;2. Search for “Del Paso Country Club”;3. Click on “Get” and then “Install” to start the download;4. Enter iTunes password;5. FAQsQ - What devices supports the app?A - Apple – iphone 4s and newer models that have iOS 8.0 or newer operating system installed.Android – Android version 4.4.2 or newer operating system installed.Windows phone – not supportedBlackberry – not supportedTablets – not supported because the screen size is so different from smartphones that it is better to optimize for one type of device, smartphones.
Q - What if I do not have an iPhone or Android?A - Our mobile site is available for all devices that access the internet and provides most of the same features as the app. Please visit www.delpasocc.org on your mobile device to view the website.
Q - I forget my username or password for the club’s website, what do I do?A - Please contact Casey Cavner at [email protected] or call 916-489-3681.
Q - Can I still use the website to make reservations, look up events, etc?A - Yes, you can use either the app or website. Both are built on the same software platform so the software works regardless and reservations made on the app will show up on the website and vice-versa.
Q - Is there an instruction manual?A - No, just like the most popular apps out there, this app has been built from the ground up to be intuitive and easy to use so no instructional manual is required.
Other questions – please contact Casey Cavner at 916-489-3681 or [email protected] for additional questions or assistance.

Congratulation to our 2016 Lady Magpie Champions!Carol Whitelaw, Julie Ogan and their guests Sandy Uhrhammer and PJ Ogan Wells
Our 2016 Lady Magpie, “Let’s Celebrate!” certainly found something extra special to celebrate this year. Our field of 88 players cheered when the winners were announced. Julie Ogan had the special privilege of playing and winning with her daughter PJ. Carol Whitelaw then took the microphone to announce that she and her partner Sandy Uhrhammer had played together in the Lady Magpie for 38 years and this was their first win! Could it get any more special than that? I think not!
A very special thank you goes out to Susan Summers-Forbess and her committee for the outstanding job they did to put on this event. From the fabulous cocktail party on Wednesday, to those young guns Sierra Summers and Brittany Siegel winning the Horserace on Thursday, to Carol and Julie’s special victory on Friday, every detail was spot on. Good friends and families, terrific food and a whole lot of fun - truly something to celebrate!
As you are all aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. To honor all of those affected by this disease -- and I do believe that is all of us - the WGG held a special Rally For The Cure event just prior to our Magpie. A special thank you to Nina Adams for all her hard work and innovation putting on this tournament which raised over $1200 for Albie Aware, a local charity which focuses on providing support for women and men in our own community. Go Pink!
The year is coming to an end but we still have plenty of golf left to play! See you at the club!

THANKSGIVING AND THE DEL PASO FAMILY
For a week now I’ve been trying to write my annual “How to Enjoy Thanksgiving and the Holidays without Gaining Too Much Weight” article and I just can’t bring myself to it this year. Part of the reason is that it’s been a life changing year for me and others here at our club so my Thanksgiving message may surprise you.
Exercise and healthy eating is important all year round but Thanksgiving is the one day we indulge so I say do just that if you want and get on back on track after! Enjoy all you can. Eat and savor all your favorite Thanksgiving foods with all the people you love and cherish in your life. Laugh a LOT! Be thankful and above all grateful for the many blessings we all have in our lives, including the family we have here in this very unique and special club. What makes us who we are is a very diverse family of members from all different backgrounds with a number of things in common. We care about each other, the Sacramento community and our club! We are a kind, compassionate and generous family, there for each other no matter what. When a member or employee is sick, or suffers the devastating loss of a loved one, our “family” surrounds them and holds them up through the pain and grief. It’s just how we are, and who we are.
This morning I walked Bobby Siravo Jr. out of the Fitness Center after his workout and he said something to me that inspired this article. As you know we all recently lost his father, Bob Siravo Sr. but there are no words for the loss and life changing impact this has had on Trish, the Siravo family and on Bobby’s life. So we’re walking out and Bobby says “This gym is like my support group.” “Mine too,” I replied. Those who exercise in our Fitness Center come together daily and there is a comradery like no other. Everyone was there for me when I lost my loved one last year, nurturing my broken heart and walking me through a grief I felt incapable of surviving. I never asked for or expected such
support from this amazing place that employs me, but there it was and it helped bring me back to life again. I’m so grateful for this family all there for Bobby now and he is as grateful as I am!
So this Thanksgiving and throughout the holidays come enjoy the fun in the Fitness Center and exercise with your Del Paso family. It’s fun and the never ending banter and joking between all helps make your day even better!
This time of year many “exercise to eat” so it’s also a great way to control holiday weight gain while enjoying each other and getting to know your fellow members. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I look forward to seeing you in the gym SOON.
