NEMESIS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION P.O BOX 604 Port Hueneme CA 93044-0604 November 2016 n f s t e n . d President’s Corner: Holiday luncheon and missing members I am looking forward to our upcoming quarterly luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Bard Mansion. We have arranged for the T. J. Zeiler guitar duo to entertain us with Christmas songs as they did last year. We are planning a raffle, so if you are so inclined, bring something to raffle off. The price is right and you will be bound to see many former co-workers to visit with. Our new Board of Directors is settling in, even though the summertime is a difficult season to get big things done. However Fred Erhardt has been making a lot of things happen with the historical displays. The Board is planning on taking a little tour of them after the October board meeting. Contact me if you would like to join us in this tour. Thank you Fred! We sent out postcards to 100 alumni last year that we seemed to have lost track of. The non-response was surprisingly high. Now we are considering setting up an Alumni Facebook page to help us restore contact with our lost members. Judy Fragale has agreed to take the lead on this effort so your Board can reduce the feeling of loneliness we have had for some time! In the programs area we are looking for some additional help to broaden the appeal of our quarterly All Hands meetings. Contact me if you have some suggestions. Doug McAvoy [email protected] We’ve had a tremendous response to our new NEMESIS Alumni update feature! Several alumni have emailed news and photos about their current status. Check the last page for their updates. Those not featured in this issue will be in the next! Drop us a line and tell us all about yourself. Just fill in the following: 1. Name 2. Year retired 3. Job/Department when you retired 4. Where are you living now? 5. What are you doing (hobbies, travel, grandkids, working again). Say as much as you want. 6. Favorite memory(ies) of NSWSES/NSWC 7. Photo (optional. jpeg please) 8. Contact info (optional): if you’d like old friends to get in touch. Please email to [email protected]. Can’t wait to hear from you! Know any who wants to join the NEMESIS Alumni Association? Or anyone who should join? It’s easy! Go online to our website at http://nemesisalumni.org/membershipeligibility.html for rules and a membership application. Any individual is eligible for membership if, as a civilian was employed by the Station for a period of three years or more, or while on active duty in the U.S. Navy was assigned for a tour of duty at the Station.

Employees of PHD/NSWC are not eligible for membership until they have departed the Command.

Associate Members -- Those individuals who have been associated with the Station for an extended period of time, or those who, in rare cases, have rendered a service, or services, which have enhanced the reputation, health, well-being, or mission of the Station, can join as Associate Members. Associate Membership is established through the completion and submittal of an application to the Membership Committee, and acceptance of the Board of Directors. Associate Members have no voting authority in the Association.

Do You Know Or Remember? By Gerry Roberts

The following information was pulled from the NSWSES Interface dated 28 June 1974:

At a colorful Change of Command ceremony, attended by more than 500 personnel, Capt. Robert L. Walters relieved Capt. E. A. Christofferson jr., who will retire June 30, 1974.

R A d m D e d r i c k , V i c e Commander, Naval Ordnance Systems Command, paid tribute t o N S W S E S , C a p t . Christofferson and reviewed the merger of Naval Ordnance Systems Command and Naval Ship Systems Command, which will result in the newNaval Sea Systems Command July 1, 1974.

Capt . Wal ters assumed command of the station on June 21, 1974. His remarks at the Change of Command ceremony are quoted below:

“It is with distinct honor and privilege to assume command of the Naval Ship weapons Sytems E n g i n e e r i n g S t a t i o n . M y association with this Station spans all of the period of its existence and actually extends to its pre-natal period—so to speak.

“As a member of the Chief of Naval Operations staff in the early 60s, I was involved in the conceptual planning which would later result in the establishment of this Station as a major field a c t i v i t y u n d e r t h e N a v a l Ordnance Systems Command to provide much needed in-service engineering support to our fl e d g l i n g s u r f a c e m i s s i l e

systems. During the 10-year

period of its existence, NSWSES has consistently provided timely and exceptionally outstanding support to the Naval Ordnance Systems Command, Naval Ship Systems Command, and to the Fleet.

“During my nearly eight years of service in four of our guided missile ships, I have seen NSWSES people at work all over the wor ld . As a weapons systems acquisition manager in NAVORD, I subjected NSWSES to difficult challenges, often in fields of endeavor quite new to them and which inevitably were on short notice and of the highest priority. In al of these endeavors, NSWSES personnel responded in a superb manner. The hallmarks of a NSWSES employee are confidence, professionalism and a can-do spirit.

“These traits have earned this Station the true respect of our Navy men in uniforms in every ship and shore activity which employs their services. I know of no other organization that enjoys such a uniformly high reputation in the Fleet as does NSWSES. This reputation has not been easily attained nor is it the product of a few individuals. It has been earned by hundreds of people over a span of more than 10 years; through countless examples of untiring devotion to duty, meticulous attention for deta i l and the cont inuous application of many talents to the problems at hand.

“The initial task assigned to N S W S E S t o i m p r o v e t h e readiness of our surface-to-air

missile systems has been a continuing one as old systems have been modified and new systems introduced. Accordingly, new challenges always l ie ahead. Our Navy today is facing many difficult challenges. We must keep our operating forces modern and efficient to keep pace with the rapid development of the Soviet Navy into a world-wide force of modern and capable ships. We must be prepared to set the example for, and to assist many developing nations who have indicated a growing naval awareness.

“…Today this Station is directly involved in engineering and logistic support efforts in over 100 of our operating ships. W e h a v e e x p a n d e d o u r expertise to include surface-to-surface missiles, gun systems, underway replenishment, test and evaluation, anti-ship missile defense and systems analysis, to mention only a few. To those who manifest a proven capability there are always new demands, extension of old tasks and exposure to new programs.

“I know that everyone here at NSWSES is proud of their many outstanding accomplishments. I am confident that we will all continue to do our best to maintain our fine record of achievement and to enhance our volume to the newly established NAVSEA organization in the Naval Material command. I am sure that we will all strive to maintain our enviable record of support to the Fleet. We look forward to our future with great anticipation.”
