We had to cancel the May, June and July outings but I think we can do the August outing. We have put up with fire and now rain and I believe it’s high time we get out and do some prospecting. Notwithstanding my feelings, if there is a resurgence of fire activity, we get out. As some of you know the Forest Service has installed a gate with a combination lock preventing access to our Turkey Creek claims. As mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter we, through the efforts of Jack Engbrecht and some others, were able to persuade the Forest Service to give us the combination to the lock for the use of RRPC club members. I don’t very much care for the idea of having to go through a locked gate to get to our claims, which are our property so far as the mineral rights are concerned. How- ever, what I think doesn’t really matter. We are dealing ultimately with the Federal Government and we do not need any problems with the Forest Service. Therefore, do not give out the combination and by all means; lock the gate when you go through. There is gold in Turkey Creek and none of us wants to be shut out by government action that would leave us no recourse except expensive legal action to regain access. As I have said previously, we own our claims pursuant to the Mining Law of 1872, but everything else is 21 st century. There are factions in the government and outside of it that would like to keep us and every- one else off public lands. We have to act in a responsible manner and follow the law with all its winding procedures to keep doing what we enjoy; prospecting. You may recall the Congress passed a law, as part of a spending bill that raised the yearly fees for associated mining claims that directly affects us. Specifically this will result in the BLM fees of $140 per year on twenty-acre claims being raised on all claims over twenty acres. This law has not yet been imple- mented and we believe it will not be implemented this year. Possibly it is because this is an election year, but I believe it is just because they didn’t get around to it yet. The government is huge and usually moves slowly. I do believe it will be implemented next year and therefore, we are proceeding to decide if we should drop some claims or shrink the area encompassed by some of our claims. As stated last month the Board is organizing a Claims Patrol, as was the case years ago, to check for unfilled holes and also to be sure that persons working our claims are members. If persons want to prospect on our claims we will give them the opportunity to join the club. Of course, they will have to pay dues like everyone else. There is no free ride. In closing, please watch the heat when prospecting, quit in the early afternoon and have a good month. Frederick Horn, President

PRESIDENTS CORNER

We are going to try to have an outing in August. We had to cancel the May, June and July outings

but I think we can do the August outing. We have put up with fire and now rain and I believe it’s high

time we get out and do some prospecting. Notwithstanding my feelings, if there is a resurgence of fire

activity, we get out.

As some of you know the Forest Service has installed a gate with a combination lock preventing

access to our Turkey Creek claims. As mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter we, through the efforts of

Jack Engbrecht and some others, were able to persuade the Forest Service to give us the combination to

the lock for the use of RRPC club members. I don’t very much care for the idea of having to go through a

locked gate to get to our claims, which are our property so far as the mineral rights are concerned. How-

ever, what I think doesn’t really matter. We are dealing ultimately with the Federal Government and we

do not need any problems with the Forest Service. Therefore, do not give out the combination and by all

means; lock the gate when you go through. There is gold in Turkey Creek and none of us wants to be shut

out by government action that would leave us no recourse except expensive legal action to regain access.

As I have said previously, we own our claims pursuant to the Mining Law of 1872, but everything else is

21st century. There are factions in the government and outside of it that would like to keep us and every-

one else off public lands. We have to act in a responsible manner and follow the law with all its winding

procedures to keep doing what we enjoy; prospecting.

You may recall the Congress passed a law, as part of a spending bill that raised the yearly fees for

associated mining claims that directly affects us. Specifically this will result in the BLM fees of $140 per

year on twenty-acre claims being raised on all claims over twenty acres. This law has not yet been imple-

mented and we believe it will not be implemented this year. Possibly it is because this is an election year,

but I believe it is just because they didn’t get around to it yet. The government is huge and usually moves

slowly. I do believe it will be implemented next year and therefore, we are proceeding to decide if we

should drop some claims or shrink the area encompassed by some of our claims.

As stated last month the Board is organizing a Claims Patrol, as was the case years ago, to check

for unfilled holes and also to be sure that persons working our claims are members. If persons want to

prospect on our claims we will give them the opportunity to join the club. Of course, they will have to

pay dues like everyone else. There is no free ride.

In closing, please watch the heat when prospecting, quit in the early afternoon and have a good

month.

Glory Days in Salome Salome, Arizona is a sleepy desert town on Highway 60 west of Wickenburg. Very little to almost nothing happens here day to day. It was much the same back in the first years of the 1900's. Everything changed one weekend in March of 1909. On Friday March 12th, three prospectors were working a gulch about seven miles northwest of town. These men named Henry Barker, Hiram Griffin and Shorty Algers hit some rich looking surface gold and rushed to town with several chunks. An ex-perienced miner named Dick Hall figured that there was $50.00 worth of gold in every fist sized piece. The miner and the three prospectors headed back out to the gulch. They picked out two sacks of ore that Dick Hall said would run at least $20,000. to the ton. Word spread fast in Arizona Territory on any new gold strike. By afternoon on Saturday, the town was being invaded with gold seekers. There wasn't a horse, mule, or wagon train that wasn't rented, bought or in some cas-es, stolen by the rushing miners. The Journal Miner paper in Prescott printed the first news of the strike. The headline read "Big Discovery Starts Wild Stampede to Harcuvar Range". The story in the paper told of some chunks of ore the size of a man's fist were one-third gold. Big coarse nuggets and wire gold ran all through these chunks, according to the Miner. At this time saloon business was terrible on Whiskey Row, when the story hit the streets. Patrons literally ran out of the bars and gambling halls. These men were part of the mobs that were arriving or on their way to Salome by Monday. With no hotels it was utter chaos. This chaos went on for several weeks. During this time the Miner ran daily reports on the "Big Bonanza". Many reports were given of some of the rich chunks of ore that were found.

Then several weeks later, the ore was depleted. It turned out to only be a surface deposit. Deeper digging did not expose any new ore. The exit from Salome was almost as hectic for the men as the arrival. Very little details of this short lived gold rush have survived. If you pass through, or visit Salome today, it's hard to realize much of anything has ever happened there. However, finding the right gulch seven miles northwest of town might be a real find if you have your metal detector along. With all the crowds and confusion I believe these miners could have been quite careless. Some lost pieces of this rich ore would be quite a find. Note: I have no idea if there are current mining claims covering the area. As always, be sure to honor any property notices. Note: Article was written by club member Gene Mrotek #1091

Gate Across Senator Highway

The Prescott National Forest has recently in-

stalled a locked gate across the Senator

Highway just south of the intersection with

the Mayer Rd. This gate prevents access to

the Club claims along Turkey Creek in that

area. The Club has contacted the Forest Ser-

vice and stated our right for access to the

Club claims south of that gate. The Forest

Service responded by supplying the lock

combination so that we can have access to

that area.

You can obtain the lock combination by con-

tacting the office via email or phone.

You must supply your member number and

address.

This combination is for our club use ON-

LY. DO NOT give out this combination to

anyone.

Be sure to lock the gate each time you pass

through.
