Winter 2014 President’s Letter Dear Fellow Bobcats: Once again, thank you for your continued support by sending in your annual dues, and our thanks to the many LIFE members that continue to give. Finally, we truly appreciate our generous Paws, Big Cats and Top Cat Club membership. Your generosity, and the growth of your investment this past year, allowed the GHH- SAA to award a $2,500 scholarship each to Kiley Kinnard, Nicholas Luckenbach and Josie Martina. We also manage the Brotherhood of Rooks fund, and Josh Smith and Jon Sterneker each received a $1,000 scholarship. We also manage the GHHS Legacy Society Fund which awarded the $2,500 Carol Sue Greenisen-Herd Scholarship to Sierra Dobbs-Brown and the $1,000 Wright Family Scholarship to Tenley Aufdencamp. Congratulations to all the recipients. We’re proud of the entire Class of 2014. The alumni turnout for the annual Memorial Parade was the largest ever. A highlight was George “Jim” Hecox ‘40 walking the entire two-mile parade route. George rocks (and walks)! In school news, we say THANK YOU to Ed O’Reilly for his outstanding service as our superintendent for the last 15 years. We will miss him. We extend a warm welcome to Andy Culp, our new superintendent. We commend the elementary and high school principals who just completed fantastic “rookie” years. We greatly enjoyed the ceremony honoring a truly beloved Grandview teacher with the naming of the Larry Larson Middle School. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at the May dedication. And we welcome the Class of 2014 – the 99th graduating class – to our Alumni Association. The Class of 2015 soon begins its senior year. The GHHSAA, the City of Grandview Heights and the Grand- view Heights School System are making special plans to celebrate the 100th graduating class of our awe- some childhood community. Join us on September 5th for the “Retro Jersey” football game. Also, be sure to come out September 26 for the Alumni Night football game – a 100th Anniversary celebration jointly sponsored by the GHHSAA and GHHS. Please let this letter serve as your official invitation to attend this special Alumni game. Band alumni – with or without instruments – are welcome to join the GHHS Marching Band before the game to play the Star Spangled Banner and the GHHS Alma Mater. We would like to recognize Alumni football players, cheerleaders, homecoming queens and courts, Hall-of-Famers, Distinguished Alumni and ALL alumni in attendance. Please e-mail me at [email protected], or send a note with your name and graduation year to PO Box 12116, Columbus, OH 43212 if you plan on attending. We are very pleased that a number of class reunions have planned their events around this date. Lastly, I continue to enjoy receiving your compliments about the newsletter, but the credit is due to the three people who do the work: Teri Antolino Williams ‘74, Molly Hammer Tanner ‘82 and Kathy Koch Gatch ‘85. CATMEWSJoan Neese Jackson ‘39 Living in First Community Village. The recent Normandy landing anniversary reminds her of the several post-war years she spent in Germany with her Up-per Arlington grad husband, Jim Jackson, who was an officer in the U.S. Army and was the Com-mander of the Military Police guards posted at the Nurem-berg Prison guarding Nazi officials. He was the one who discovered the death by suicide body of Joseph Goebbels. Joan spent time there with him and toured much of the area, agree-ing to hold off having family until their return to the States.

Back in the States, when their children were young and they wanted to talk without being overheard they would speak in German. Joan’s classmate and close friend Gloria Garder Luke-man ‘39, who winters in Naples, Florida, is spending the summer in Upper Arlington. For her birthday, Joan’s children took her to Paul’s Pantry for dinner, which she enjoyed very much.

Rosanne (Posy) Singleton Kopf ‘43I have happy memories of Grandview and continue to enjoy life. Enjoyed seeing the recent picture of some of my sister’s – Nancy Singleton York ‘48 – classmates.

Jeanette Tarney Thouvenin ‘43 I have moved to a retirement center – Copeland Oaks in Se-bring, Ohio near Alliance where my stepson is pastor at a church.

Jeanne Weisert Brown ‘44 Just a short note to say hello from Georgia! Would much rather be back in California playing golf, but it’s not too bad here. It’s funny how after all these years, my friend Barb Al-len Garret ‘44 and I both ended up in Roswell, GA.

Al Cincione ‘52 St. Mary’s in German Village. Many of my friends are GHHS graduates and our grandchil-dren are attending Grandview Schools. Adam Cincione gradu-ated last year and is now at OSU in Engineering & Air Force ROTC.

Thank you to all involved in our newsletter. It is so great. I find out about classmates and what is going on with them. Thanks for all of your hard work. I miss Grandview, but I like Texas win-ters better. Go Bobcats!

Bill Fink ‘55 Attended OSU vs. Cal football game with Craig Prosser ‘59 last fall. Ran into Nancy Turner Bach-man ‘55 and her husband Tony in line to see OSU Band perform before game.

Sally Jones Morgan ‘55 Moving to a new location closer to the ferry! Loving life on the island. Spending time with the wildlife shelter, aquarium, walk-

ing and conservation groups, and of course all five grandkids!

Carolyn Welch ‘55 Looking forward to our 60th in Oct 2015.

Charles Dumbaugh ‘56 Always great to hear news about Grandview Heights, GHHS and my classmates.

Dick Hankeison ‘57 I will always be a Bobcat!

Jay Millikin ‘58 Lookin’ great Class of ‘58! Laura Carter Jados ‘67 Thanks so much for the great newsletter. Love to read about GHHS grads, historical info, and current GHHS info.

Chris Albrecht ‘67 We’ve been living in Knoxville, TN for nearly 18 years. I’m now retired. Mary is still a big wheel at the University of Tennessee

as the Associate Vice Provost. We’re big fans of UT Men’s and Women’s Basketball, but still bleed Scarlet and Gray during football season!

Gary and RaMarie Whipple Swart ‘69 Gary and RaMarie currently live in Grove City. RaMarie is retired from teaching and school coun-seling and currently telecom-mutes doing media work for businesses. Gary is still working for the State of Ohio in IT and data systems management. Our son, Travis is a USAF Captain and has had two deployments to the Middle East. He is currently serving as an instructor. Both of our fathers, Camden Swart ‘42 and Charles Whipple ’42, were Rooks, GHHS Class of ‘42. GO ‘CATS!!

Jane Barnett Powell ‘69 Having read of Mr. Hopkins passing, I remember most of all how he helped me to recover

Golf vacation in Destin, Florida, March, 2014 with 1975-77 graduates Jeff Hamilton, Rob Gresham, Marty Vaughan, Duane Teal, Randy Fowls.

CATMEWSCorrectionfrom a not-so-sports injury. From

1966-69, I attended GHHS and participated in many varsity, intramural sports and was a cheerleader. Of course we all knew Coach Hopkins and many were somewhat cautious of interacting with him. There were those “stories” about his rules for his players during the season like not dating, curfew and more.

One night, returning from a field hockey practice at the stadium, other team members and I were hurrying back to the locker room to end our long day. I was hop-ping over the wire “rope” at the parking lot – the one that kept cars from parking in the grass – when my stick caught it. I fell and fractured my elbow. It was the first and only injury I had during my career at GHHS. You can imag-ine my embarrassment, right?

I didn’t want this to ruin my season and I knew Coach had a whirlpool tub in the boys locker room. The girls did not. Since I was a volunteer helping with typing and chores in his office, he arranged for me to use the whirl-pool for faster healing when the locker room was empty. It was so kind of him and he was seeing Title 9 in the foreground.

Rob Grisiam ‘75 A group of 1975-1977 Grandview grads gathered for a spring golf outing in Destin, Florida last March. The 1975 District golf champions from Grandview – Marty Vaughan, Rob Gresham, Randy Fowls, Duane Teal, and Jeff Hamilton – demonstrated their waning golf skills over four days on the Florida Panhandle fairways. Grandview basketball legend Mike Heine and son also joined the outing. As usual when-ever Grandview alum gather, the discussion includes memories and stories of high school days and feelings of gratitude for hav-ing been blessed to attend such a special school.

Michael Rill ‘01 I remember fondly how exciting it was to not only be presented with what at the time was a great deal of money that afforded me a computer to take to college, but how proud I was to be a member of such a grand organization that later fueled my desire for intercol-legiate fraternal values!

Editor’s Note: Michael receive a Rooks scholarship his senior year of high school. You make the Rooks proud, Michael!

That Grandview ConnectionSubmitted by Roger Wootten ‘43

In August of 1951, I was out of the World War II Air Force, had completed a degree at OSU, and was in Cambridge, MA study-ing for priesthood in the Episcopal Church. A part of that train-ing included pastoral work studies serving as a ward attendant and then as chaplain at Massachusetts General Hospital. One morning, I was assigned to visit a patient, a Mr. Lee from Colum-bus. As Providence would have it, it was Eleanor “Rowena” and Rosemary “Corky” Lee’s father, a gentlemen I’d first met on eve-nings I’d been to their home when taking his daughter out on a dance date when we were at GHHS. We’d not seen each other since graduation. It was a simple Grandview moment for us both, in the midst of his sorrowful illness, a stranger in Boston.

Recognizing his physical discomfort, I asked him if he needed anything. He asked if I might massage his back, something that in my earlier ward attendant phase I’d done for patients many times. I did so, sprinkling his back first with talcum, and then silently praying for him as I massaged his back. Our visit lasted about a half hour, and I departed saying I would see him again the next day. I returned only to find him gone, learning from the nurse that Mr. Lee had died the night before. In the years since high school graduation I’d lost touch with the Lee sisters. Still I had always wanted to have some opportunity to share this event with them, just a word about my ministry to their Dad, and that even lonely in Boston, their Dad had had a Grandview friend to the very last moments of his life.

Catherine Scanland Brubaker ‘46 pointed out a mistake in the Spring 2013 newsletter. In that issue, we incorrectly identified one of three GHHS sororities as SOR instead of the correct SOE for Sigma Omega Epsilon. She and Carolyn Crandall McMunn ‘46 co-founded the chapter. Catherine also founded an Alum-na Chapter at Capital University which is now over 50 years old and still strong. We apologize for our error.

Abigail Hanson ‘12 Sophomore English major at Ohio Wesleyan University and was awarded the Schubert Scholarship! English Major.

Editor’s Note: The Leland F. and Helen Schubert Scholarship is for exceptional first-year students, re-newable for up to three additional years of study, allows the student to be considered for the rigorous Schubert Scholars Competition for further scholarship dollars and makes them eligible for invita-tion to OWU’s prestigious Honors Program. Nice job, Abigail!

Nice “bunny ears” Randy Fowls!

After Prom Party!

2014

5

Dear GHHS Alumni Association,

Thank you so much for your donation to the

Grandview Heights After Prom Party held April

12, 2014. As parents of teenagers, our goal is to

provide a safe environment after dancing at the

prom. With the help of many generous business-

es, we were able to provide these children with

a fun location, food, drink, goody bags and gift

cards to make it a fun and memorable evening.

We appreciate your support!

Sincerely,

Grandview After Prom Committee Parents

To commemorate 100 years of GHHS graduates, many events are being planned for a year-long celebration. We hope you’ll come out for Retro Jersey Night September 5 and a special Alumni Night Football Game September 26. Go ‘Cats!

All Alumni are invited to attend the September 26 Alumni Night Football Game. Are you a former band member? Please

join us on the field - with or without your instruments - for the playing of the Star Spangled Banner and the GHHS Alma Mater. All Alumni in attendance will be recognized. Whether you were a homecoming queen, president of student council, a cheerleader, or a science club member, please let us know if you’ll be attending. Send an email with name and grad year to [email protected].

Retro Jersey Night As part of the 100th Class cel-ebration, the football team will be wearing retro jerseys for the September 5 game. Will Retro Jersey Night feature the 1926 “Skeleton” look? Or copy the 1939 version to honor the first undefeated team? Or another look all together? Come find out on September 5 and enjoy the game. We encourage you to wear your own jersey or letter jacket from back in the day. Go ‘Cats! And don’t forget about the Alumni Night Football Game September 26.

In 1914, WWI began, Woodrow Wilson was President, Ford Motor Company announced an 8-hour workday with a minimum wage of $5 per day, Babe Ruth made his major league debut, the original Mother’s Day occurred, and the first graduates of Grandview Heights High School - the Class of 1915 - began its senior year.

Brotherhood of Rooks Bowling Trophy

Brotherhood of the Rooks cabinPhoto courtesy of GHMCHS

Ned Barricklow B of R ‘64 took this trophy off the Rook House mantel in 1964 when the police came to officially close the house. The trophy inscription reads:

Brotherhood of Rooks Bowling Trophy · 1926 A.G. Bradbury Total Pins 489 · 1927 L.S. Rey-nard Total Pins 519 · 1928 L.S. Reynard Total Pins 542 · 1929 D.S. Skeele Total Pins 566 · 1930 Louis Herscler Total Pins 532 · 1931 John K. Landaker Total Pins 499

Ned rescued this from a fire in the 70’s and protected it for the last 50 years!

Two unidentified fraternity brothers relax inside the Broth-erhood of the Rooks cabin. The cabin was the home of the Gar-rett Miller family, and was origi-nally located near Cambridge Boulevard and Cardigan Road. It was moved log by log and reconstructed at its current loca-tion on Wyandotte Road, where it became the clubhouse of the Rooks. The Rooks used the 18’x20’ cabin as a club house until 1920, when the Bronson family, whose son Joe was a Rook, moved and the boys lost the use of the cabin. The group later sold shares in order to raise money for a fraternity house which was located at 1347 El-mwood Avenue. Please contact the GH/MC Historical Society if you can identify the individuals in this photo. Email [email protected].

Janice Shough Hays ‘59 In the last issue on page six, you have a picture of the girls field hockey team with no names. I can identify the following: Starting 3rd from left is Nancy Gehrig, Patty Palmer, Sally Spangler, Jan Elliott, Marcia Williams, Susie Yoerger, Joyce Whitten, Donna Bradshaw. I can’t remember the names of the first two or the last two girls. Maybe someone else will contact you with their names. I do know all the names I gave you are girls from the class of 1959. I think the other four were in the class of 1960. I hope this is helpful.

Letter from the Principal

Dear Bobcats,

We hope that your summer has been filled with quality time with your loved ones

and many positive experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.

I will begin by saying it would be an understatement to say that we are simply “ex-

cited” about the 2014-15 school year and what it means for the students of GHHS.

As many of you are aware, we will be celebrating the 100th commencement of

Grandview Heights High School on Sunday May 25th, 2015. This day will not only

mark an important day in the history of our school, but will also serve as a platform

to celebrate the many proud traditions that you have built for our future Bobcats. As

we look to the 14-15 school year we have decided that such an important celebration

should not be a single event, but rather a yearlong celebration. We will share details

as our plans become more fully developed, but we certainly hope you’ll join us for

the Alumni Football Game September 26.

I would also like to take a moment to welcome our new Superintendent of schools,

Mr. Andy Culp, to Grandview. I have known Andy for several years and I am very

confident that he will be a good fit for Grandview Heights for so many reasons. Andy

has spent the bulk of his career in New Albany Schools as a teacher, assistant prin-

cipal, and principal. Most recently, Andy served in the Marysville School district

in the role of assistant superintendent. I would describe Andy as being dedicated,

charismatic, passionate, and student-centered. He has been working to learn the

traditions and culture of our school district and community, and he is clearly excited

to get started. If you get the chance, please send him a warm Bobcat welcome to

[email protected].

PTBB! As always, Proud To Be a Bobcat!

Ken Chaffin

Principal of Grandview Heights High School
