President’s Letter-Mike Hessler

Well, another chicken fry has come and gone and from all the com-

ments I heard it was a huge success. I can’t tell you how many people

commented to me about how good the chicken was and that we still

cook our own unlike many of the other clubs.

This entire club owes Joe Teer jr. a huge round of applause for once

again pulling off the best party on the lake. The job of chicken fry chair-

man is a very difficult one and starts well before the actual day of the

chicken fry.

Food, beer, soda, equipment, supplies and many other tasks requires

Joe to start his job months in advance of the actual date and requires

significant amounts of his time to pull this off. Once again Joe, a job

well done.

Also, a great big thanks to all the members who worked so hard to pull

this event off and showed up to work their shifts. While there were

some minor malfunctions in all the membership did a great job working

at their stations they signed up for.

That leads me into our third major fund raiser fund raiser the Barbecue

&Rib cook off and Bloody Mary throw down to be held Sept. 13, 2014.

Since its beginning 2 years ago this event has been a huge success eve-

ry year. There is good food volley ball & bocce ball tournaments, great

music, and cold beer and that night the band “After Sunset” who did

such a great job at the chicken fry will play starting after sunset (small

attempt at humor).

As a reminder for those of you who haven’t worked either of our other

2 fundraisers this will be your last chance to do so. The membership

committee enforced this rule last year and will do so again this year. A

signup sheet is up at the club house so please sign up to help out at this

great event.

On August 14th the Illinois gaming commission sent 2 officers out to do

their site inspection of our club to determine if we should be granted a

gaming license. The inspection went very well and I have every reason

Page 2: President’s Letter-Mike Hessler - Anchor Boat Club

to believe we will be granted our license at the commissions September

meeting.

Al Houser and I attended a seminar for licensee’s and potential licensee’s at

the Crown Plaza a couple of weeks ago and we were told that ALL GAMES OF

CHANCE when a license is granted are now ILLEGAL. This would include any

type of drawings where members have to pay to enter, 50-50’s, card games,

super bowl pools etc. However, this does not apply to games of skill so our

spooner tournament, volleyball & bocce tournaments can still be held.

In follow up, I did ask our agent if we were subject to inspection even though

we haven’t officially been issued a license and his response was a very definite

YES.

So please refrain from bringing out any such items as cards, dice or any pools

or 50-50’s.

I know there has been a lot of people saying that all we need to do is to go to

the county and get their permit and we can still do all those things I just dis-

cussed but that can’t be farther from the truth. Those rules apply only to Fra-

ternal organizations which are true not profits such as the Elks, KofC, DAV. Etc.

We are not a true not for profit as they are.

There will be a discussion at the September meeting on an idea that Al Houser

had for still doing a drawing that wouldn’t require any member to contribute

but that the bar would put X amount of dollars in a pool for a member draw-

ing. This we are told would be legal.

It seems like just yesterday that we were putting our boats in the water but

sadly summer is drawing to a close so come on out and spend the last month

or so with an ice cold barley pop.

Operation Payback-Mary Reagan

On August 20 we packed 8 boxes that were mailed the next day. These care packages went to two soldiers in Afghanistan. This mailing pretty much depleted our funds so now that the summer events are over we are going to have a couple of fall fund raisers. On Friday, September 26 we will be having a Garage and Bake Sale at the club from 9am to 6pm. Donations will be accepted for the garage sale on Wednesday September 24 from 4-6pm and garage sale donations and baked goods on Thursday, September 25 from 5-8pm. If anyone is available to help on Thursday eve and all day Friday it would be greatly appreciated. We especially need help putting up tables, sorting and marking garage sale items. In October we would like to have a Friday Night Food Service and Silent Auction. Details of this event will be coming soon and I hope everyone will also support us at that time. After that we are hoping to have enough money to get through the holidays until our February Val-entine Candy Sales. Thanks to those who continue to help with the packing and tedious job of filling out labels and those that support us financially. Remember, we still have a bin in the party room and the ‘light house’ on the bar. A thank you letter from one of the soldiers and our mission statement are posted on the slid-ing glass door at the club. Anyone wanting more info can find it at AnySoldier.com Thanks again for your support!
