President’s Message April 2017
The Wayne Drumlins Antique Auto Region
Volume 42 Issue 3 April 2017 Published by and for the Wayne Drumlins Antique Auto Region Inc.
Greetings Folks,
It looks like spring is finally on its way. Time to break out the polishing supplies, upholstery cleaners, leather protectors, grease guns, and oils to get our special rides ready for another season of enjoyment. Along with the physical work of getting everything ready, there is also the annual re-quirements of registration, insurance, and New York vehicle inspections. While the last few items are not necessarily enjoyable, they are perhaps the most critical part of making ready for another season of enjoyment.
Speaking of state requirements, some of you may have heard, New York has ventured into the classic car field on an official state level. On March 28
th, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Franklin Roosevelt’s 1932
Packard model 905 is being removed from the New York State Museum and will be sent to a restorer in Connecticut for a complete preservation process. Purchased toward the end of Roosevelt’s second term as gover-nor of the state for use as a staff car, the Full Classic dual-cowl phaeton features Packard’s Twin Six V-12, dual side mounts, and leather interior. Rather than a winged goddess hood ornament, the 905 features a special New York governor’s fleet insignia. The plans are to use this beautiful car for official state functions in the future, hopefully as soon as next year.
I guess we are in good company these days.

Secretary’s Minutes

Get Well Wishes to:
Due to the severe weather cancellation of our March meeting, there are no secretary's minutes to report for this issue. This column will re-appear in our May Headliner.
Our traditional spring dinner preceding the April 19th
monthly meeting will be hosted by Hank and Donna Goellner at the Blue Ribbon Restaurant. Gather at 5:30pm. For the benefit of new members, the Blue Ribbon is located at the south east corner of routes 88 and 96 in Phelps. The prices are very reasonable, the food is good and the servings are generous. A word of cau-tion, they do not accept credit / debit cards. Bring cash. There will not be any refreshments at the meeting this month.
Saturday, March 18th dawned cloudy and cold but after a record snow fall earlier in the week,
the weather cooperated and Wayne Drumlins members enjoyed breakfast at the Log Cabin Restaurant followed by a brisk but very informative tour of Packard Valley Maple Farms.
Happy Birthday to:
Pete Empson 4/17 Steve Heald 4/17 Phil Dean 4/25

Just a friendly reminder:
Your editors are always in need of good photographs and a brief write-up of your pride and joy for our cover. We can use electronic submissions or a good color print. If you need assistance getting a picture, please contact me for help. Prints will be returned unharmed after scanning.
These pictures are courtesy of Jim Bollman and are discussed in his story on page 7. His 1950 Ford F1 is our cover shot of the month and he supplied a won-derful update for us covering the latest news from Tennessee.
Jim has dual AACA region mem-berships as not only a Wayne Drumlins member, but also a Davy Crockett Region member. As of this year, Jim became the newest editor for the Davy Crockett Newsletter, Bear Tracks. Jim and I are already sharing information and stories.

Since I'm the new newsletter editor of the Davy Crockett region and I'm finding out how hard it is to fill space each month, and I have only done three issue so far, I thought I would send in an update with a few pictures to tell you how life is going down South.
We joined the Davy Crockett region about 18 months ago. A much younger region than the Drumlins, founded in the early 90s, good group of people. Region is different in some ways and the same in others. We have two small shows a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. The Fall show is a joint show with a local street rod group. 80 to100 cars is a good turn out with minimal classes and trophies. The approach cuts down a lot on the work load for club members which is good because it is an older group just like the Drumlins. The Spring show is step up more as a cruise-in and is held in a super market parking lot. The Fall show is a bit more traditional and is held at a local park. It works for them. They do use sponsors for the few classes they have for both shows, so it is paid for before it happens which we know is a good thing when it rains. The club does a lot of road trips with a mix of antiques and modern cars in attendance. We meet at a local all you can eat restaurant that furnishes us wth a private room and a discount on the meal.
My main project after moving was getting a usable shop put together. I originally planned to put up an out building for over flow, but I got rid of enough stuff that everything fits nicely in my drive in basement so I have put off building an out building for now. I started with a 28X50 clear span open area with 9 foot ceilings. The previous owner had started putting up some nice rough sawn boards to make a party room so I incorporated that into the main shop area and put up lots of steel shelving in the other half for storage. I moved the existing florescent lighting around and installed additional LED strip lighting in the work end of the shop. I am still tweaking a few things but it is pretty much the way I want it and I'm starting to do a few small projects but want to get to my long waiting 49 Crosley wagon soon.
Having the shop in the basement is great, close for running down to do quick projects. No heating and cooling problems, I never wanted to turn heat on in my old shop for short pro-jects and now it is 60-70 degrees year around. One of the upgrades to the house was a stairs to the basement. The original owner built the house with the basement as just storage and saw no reason to have access from inside the house. We had a spiral stairs put in that goes into a small room off the main basement which is finished off an is my area to display car stuff as a transition from the house to the shop. I call it my portal.
I drive the 50 Ford F1 as often as I can but the Crosley FarmOroad hasn't gotten out much accept to run to the mail box(1/4 mile away all hill). The state road that our dead end road feeds in to is a bit busier than I though it would be, it is just a matter of getting my nerve up to the task. I like the lifetime plates for old cars, I think they were around $24 and no annual in-spection. Several gas stations close by that sell no ethanol regular gas is nice also.
Our club president is finishing the restoration of a Rochester built 1911 Selden. I'll send you his story with pictures for a future issue if you're interested. Bob Mahoney had the only other known to exist of this year and model and he made patterns off of this car to finish his resto-ration years ago, he has since sold it.
Editor’s note: Thanks to Jim for sharing this update. Along with the cover photo, additional pictures are on page 6. Look for the Selden story in an upcoming Headliner
