President’s Message
Greetings and welcome to our 3rd edition of the Houston Hot Air Recorder. Well, summer has come and gone except no one alerted the fall gods yet because the summer weather is still here. Our ASHRAE chapter is off to an incredible start this year with 2 great meetings in the books with record turnouts. We have been blessed with two great panel speaking engagements with local celebrities in their respective fields. I wanted to thank all of our members for showing incredible support for our chapter this year. Our Board of Governors is committed to making the programs
interesting and meaningful for our total membership. If we are not making it meaningful please let us know with constructive thoughts that we can use to develop best in class programs. The current Board of Governors is extremely honored to serve the chapter this year and want to make this a great membership experience. As we continue to wade through the humidity outside in hopes that cooler weather is coming, the ASHRAE chapter has a treat for you! We have another incredible program for our October 16th luncheon meeting. We will be hosting Mr. Lew Harriman, the author of many ASHRAE and industry books on humidity control. Mr. Harriman was the lead author of both ASHRAE's Humidity Control Design Guide and the ASHRAE Guide for Buildings in Hot & Humid Climates. Many of the principles used in the design of all
commercial HVAC applications in the local Houston environment rely on the concepts in Mr. Harriman’s research and books/publications. Mr. Harriman is an EXCELLENT speaker and you’ll enjoy his presentation. As a reminder we have our fall golf tournament on October 28, 2013. If you have never been before, it’s a treat. It’s a great turnout and everyone enjoys themselves. Pls. RSVP to Mike Langton ASAP because we have run out of team slots the last two events. Calling all volunteers. Don’t be afraid we need some! Looking forward to seeing a triple digit turnout for Lew Harriman in October. Let’s hope for cooler weather by then!

o 3SEP13 Mike moved the chapter cover 50% or a half of the pizza/etc. for the TAMU student branch chapter. Alan Neely seconded. Mike reported a cost of approximately $140.
o Mike recapped the chapter’s 2013/2014 goals. 125 people attended last month. This is commensurate with philosophy of program drives membership which drives research promotion.
o CRC is April 23 & 26. Mike encouraged people to stay in touch with their RVCs and make an effort to attend CRC.
o Local dues fund raising continues. o Consulting engineer express membership is approximately 15. o Mike asked Elliot to publish the date. o Mike wants a student night where companies have booths to promote their companies.
Kenneth was tasked with preparing a business plan.
Elliot Millican P.E. / President-Elect:
o Lew Herriman, distinguished lecturer, is speaking next month. Lew authored the standard for conditioning hot and humid climates.
o $1000 is allocated for speakers. Society pays for Lew’s flight. Misty at HTS is booking a hotel room. Elliot authorized to spend up to $500 for Lew’s travel expense. Elliot is picking him up at the airport and take him to dinner with Mike D. and Bill.
o November topic is steam. Spirax Sarco is providing a speaker. o February is ethics. TAMU civil engineer is providing a case study of the space shuttle failures. o Mike D. asked Elliot to publish these presentations in the HAR.
Mike Langton P.E. / Vice President:
o Golf tournament is organized to Mike’s satisfaction. He is following up with sponsors. o Mike L. requested $100 checks from each officer. He is also requesting all board members

o ASHRAE 90.1 2010 is probably being adopted by COH in 2014. Keith is convening the code review committee in the new year. Mike L. is organizing a code review seminar. Kimberly Thompson P.E. / Treasurer:
o People are sending meeting registrations until 5 pm the day before. She suggested cutting off registration at noon the day before. HESS is frustrated with the last minute attendee notifications.
o Kimberly distributed the 2013-2014 Houston Chapter budget. Elliot moved approval of the budget. Jerry Garcia seconded. Mike moved an amendment to delete the Hot Air Recorder expense, increase Scholarships from $5,000 to $6,000, Chapter Affiliation reduced from $2,000 to $1500, Miscellaneous reduced from $1,500 to $1,000, increase awards from $200 to $500. Frederick Holste May 8, 1927 to September 7, 2013 Obituary Houston Chronicle Dated 09-11-13
Frederick Robert Holste, (May 8, 1927 to September 7, 2013) Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Fred Holste passed away September 7, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Celia, son Randy and his wife Catherine, daughter Janet Cheetham and her husband Jack, grandchildren Danielle Holste with great-grandchildren Elijah, Janelle, and Aubrey; Gregory and Madeline Holste, Daniel and Stephanie Cheetham, and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his tireless, loving caregivers Angelia James, Kathryn Robinson, and Madelon Walton. He was preceded in death by his eldest son Barry in 2006 and infant son Greg Harold in 1966, his parents Sarah Ludwig and Gustav, and his sisters Estelle, Ruth, Dorothy, and Helen Marie.
Fred was born in Galveston in 1927 and worked as a young man at his father's dairy farm, Beach Dairy. He met the love of his life on the beach of Galveston and has not left her side until now. After Ball High, he graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1948, married Celia B. Ozon in 1949, then completed his Masters in Engineering at University of Houston in 1954. Also during that time he served as a cartographer during the Korean War. During his professional life as a consulting mechanical engineer he participated in various societies and contributed to many large and technically challenging projects. During his family life with Celia, children Barry, Janet and Randy they enjoyed surrounding themselves with friends for tennis (questionable line calls), dinners, and gambling junkets (in the old days). We remember Dad telling us when he met mom in Galveston - "She was the prettiest girl on the beach". He followed that with "She still is..." We all agree Fred was the best example of a kind honest father who enjoyed family time, sports, hard work, and humor. He will always be remembered for his honesty, calm diplomacy, gentlemanly example, strong work ethic and true love for Celia. Frederick Holste was a distinguished Fellow and Life Member of the local ASHRAE Houston Chapter and ASHRAE Society. Graveside service was held Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 10:30am at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet St, Houston, 77074 followed by a minyan at his home, 5123 S. Braeswood, Houston, 77096 immediately following the service. If you wish please consider donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org.
