Over the last few months we have undertaken several ‘Reflect and Refresh’ sessions involving the current OIU Executive, SIC staff and management, the P&F Association and several past Presidents of the OIU. This strategy review is designed to learn from the past without living in it and ensure we remain connected, relevant and contemporary to all members, as wide and deep as that is. Our three key pillars – past students, the school and social justice are all woven together by the philosophy and ethos of the Jesuits, and this will remain at the centre of our plans well into the future. All of the current activities of the OIU are being assessed to ensure they are consistent with the responsibilities outlined in our Constitution and these stakeholders. The passionate and extensive debate has been challenging and rewarding. I am glad to report that we are not broken, misguided or maligned; on the contrary we do and have done some amazing things that have changed people’s lives in many different parts of society which will continue long into the future. A significant part of our challenge is to ensure we are communicating more effectively what we do and how others can get involved, all the while

President's MessageCharlie Pidcock (OR1987)

Dear Leanne,

I hope 2018 has started well for you and your family.

Over the last few months we have undertaken several‘Reflect and Refresh’ sessions involving the currentOIU Executive, SIC staff and management, the P&FAssociation and several past Presidents of the OIU.This strategy review is designed to learn from the pastwithout living in it and ensure we remain connected,

relevant and contemporary to all members, as wide and deep as that is.

Our three key pillars – past students, the school and social justice are allwoven together by the philosophy and ethos of the Jesuits, and this willremain at the centre of our plans well into the future. All of the currentactivities of the OIU are being assessed to ensure they are consistent withthe responsibilities outlined in our Constitution and these stakeholders. Thepassionate and extensive debate has been challenging and rewarding. I amglad to report that we are not broken, misguided or maligned; on the contrarywe do and have done some amazing things that have changed people’s livesin many different parts of society which will continue long into the future.

A significant part of our challenge is to ensure we are communicating moreeffectively what we do and how others can get involved, all the while

now have their own OR year inscribed after their names. As a community, wecan be very proud of these young men who worked so hard through theiryears of schooling at Riverview and registered the finest profile of academicresults in the College’s history. We particularly congratulate College DuxCharlie Hoffman (OR2017), and Proxime Jesse Gray (OR2017).

To quote some of Jesse’s words from his Valete speech, which seem tocapture the essence of schooling at Riverview:

“It’s the small things that I’ll miss most, the things that marked out ourcohort as a group of compassion, a group of support. It’s the inclusivityof third yard, where you are able to migrate between pockets of flowingconversation. It’s the warm hellos and welcoming handshakes in themorning. It’s walking up main building steps together, two at a time onthe way up to the sanctuary. It’s all the smiles, the laughs, theembraces, all the small things that signify what we have developedover the last six years: bonds of brotherhood.”

Congratulations, Class of 2017.

2017 KIRCHER COLLECTION LAUNCH

9th February marked the launch of the 2017 Kircher Collection, boasting thefinest compendium of work in Literature, History, Music, Art and Drama of thegraduates of 2017. Named after Athanasius Kircher SJ, a polymath ofprodigious intellect in the 17th Century, the publication is testament to theaspirational scholarship that is alive and well at the College. The tradition ofscholarship and the desire to learn remain deeply embedded in Jesuiteducation and the sophistication of the work contained in the publication istruly remarkable from young men who are relatively new to the field. It is notinconceivable that the contributors, in years to come, could reach the loftyheights of other illustrious alumni such as Robert Hughes, Alex Seton or thesix Rhodes Scholars who have given so much to academic pursuit andartistic expression in their personal and professional lives.

RIP Patrick Rodgers (OR2011)

(Left) Patrick's first visit to Cambodia in 2010 | (Right) Patrick's last visit toCambodia in 2017

In the aftermath of the Christmas break, I am saddened to report the untimelydeath of Patrick Rodgers (OR2011) while on service works in Cambodia.Patrick is the son of one of our most senior members of staff, Mr JamesRodgers, and of Elizabeth, and brother of Michael (OR2014). Patrick’spassing is a salient reminder of the frailty of life that can be cut short at anymoment. Patrick first travelled to Cambodia as part of an immersion in Year11 and went back nine times in the five years since school. His had a passionto serve some of the most disadvantaged in Pailin, one of the finalstrongholds of the Khmer Rouge before the end of the civil war.

In honour of Patrick’s memory, his spirit and his service, the College ispleased to commission a new award to be presented each year, The PatrickRodgers Memorial Service Award, to an Old Boy whose service workbeyond school is particularly noteworthy and in accord with the servicePatrick gave so abundantly to Cambodia. May he rest in peace.

12 February1880, aftersome daysofincessantlyheavy rain,the first two

boys to be enrolled at Riverview, the brothersArthur and Thomas Moore, walked from thewharf, up Whitfield’s steps (which are still there)‘with an escort of mother and aunts’. They weregreeted by the founding Rector, Father JosephDalton SJ who was celebrating his own63rd birthday.

One of the brothers became one of the firstpriests from Riverview to be ordained; the otherserved in the colonial forces during the BoerWar.

Did they ever imagine that 138 years later, theCollege would grow to the size and eminencethat it enjoys today?

So spare a thought for Arthur and Thomas andthe thousands who followed them. Andespecially spare a thought for Father Dalton.Without his energetic vision, we’d not be heretoday.
