One of the taglines of Packards International Motor Car Club is “More than a Club; a Lifestyle." This Advertisement from the mid twenties clearly tells us that the Packard Automobile was for the “Rich and Famous” lifestyle. During the great depression, Packard Motor Car Company could no longer depend on the wealthy to sustain their business so they had to market to that other lifestyle, the working man or, as the guy was usually referred to, the Blue Collar Worker. “Ferrin” car and a piece of crap. He didn’t say crap but that other word. I went away to college and saw my first British cars (MGs mostly) and some students from Cuba had a Jaguar. Yes, that was pre-Castro. They took me for rides in these “Ferrin” things and I liked them! Those cars were a lot more exotic and exciting than my Dad’s Rambler. My cousin's 1956 Mercury Montclair was eaten alive one day by an XK-140 Jaguar. I was with him and witnessed the shock on his face. In 1962 I purchased a 1958 Austin-Healy Sprite identical to the one pictured here, based almost entirely on my experience in college. A VERY fun car. I have owned two Austin-Healys so far. My introduction to these cars I believe is why I never had any interest in the muscle cars of the sixties and seventies, and still do not. About fifteen years ago, I became interested in maybe getting an “old car”. I was interested in 1938 to 1951 model year. My uncle always had a Cadillac with the exception of a 1941 Buick Century. He bought a new 1952 Packard and thought it was a great car. Everyone where I lived commented on how great a car a Packard was; but what I really remember was them saying “not many folks could afford one of those.” I first looked at a restored 1951 Chevy but really didn’t want it. I liked the big cars such as Cadillac, Buick, and Packard. I liked the Packard, but that comment from years ago kept ringing in my head “not many folks could afford one of those.” I believed that a Packard was not in my future. One weekend about ten years ago, I was driving through Rancho Santa Fe and noticed a car show at the hotel there. I stopped and looked at the cars and really got the bug for a car again. I approached two guys sitting by a Packard and they seemed friendly, so I began asking questions about the Packard.

One of the guys was a man named Alan Taylor. They gave me a long tutorial on Packards and I was shocked to learn that I could maybe get a Packard. There was still a Packard for the “Rich and Famous” as well as one for a guy like me. I began searching; I contacted the Packards International Region in San Diego and met a guy named Phil Pizzuto who was very nice, and friendly. He furthered my belief that there was a Packard for me. Phil gave me my very first ride in a pre-war Packard (his 1939 120 Touring Sedan, shown here). A search began in earnest and the Yellow Peril was discovered in Iowa about 90 miles from where I grew up.

So, you are asking what is the point here. I hope the point is that we have a major opportunity to help people develop an interest in acquiring a Packard automobile and to have those new owners join our Region. A common characteristic I notice at the car shows I attend is that many cars have signs on them saying do not touch (or words to that effect.) The owner, usually an old guy, is in a lawn chair with an expression on his face that says “do NOT talk to me!" If our goal is to foster interest in our Packards and perhaps gain new members, we need to be more engaging. Young people (people in their thirties and forties) and kids (twenty-somethings) are less likely to engage us in conversation than someone our own age would be. So I go out of my way to let them touch the Yellow Peril, sit in it, etc. No, I am not advocating that you do all of this, but you might open the door and let them look inside. When you hear outlandish comments on what the car must be worth, enjoy the moment but correct them. We should also be aware that there are more and more ladies buying vintage cars and, as in the marketing of cars, they have a big influence on what is purchased. There is no doubt that some of the people we talk to now will one day be driving a Packard and be a member of Packards International Motor Car Club. We want people to come away with the thought that this is an organization I would like to be a part of.

MARCH'S NAME THIS CAR CHALLENGE

No one correctly identified the automobile so the prize will roll over until the next time.

This is a 1932 Marmon HCM V-12 Two Door prototype. All the answers submitted guessed a Pierce-Arrow which is not surprising. That is what I thought it was when I first saw it. It sold at the Amelia Island R&M Auction in March for $107,000.

REMINDER

The PI San Diego Region is invited by the Mercedes Benz Club to join them at their Wash & Shine Show at the Lazy H on Sunday May 19th . Please consider coming out for that event.

TEMECULA WINE COUNTRY TOUR by Richard Schauer

As Jim Woolsey often says: the sheer pleasure of being behind the

wheel of our Packards, seeing that glorious hood ornament standing tall in front of us, that alone is enough. Everything else is gravy. I can now say I understand what this means, for my car has successfully completed its first real tour.

Upon arrival at the Steffey's, we

were served a goblet of bubbly, cheese, grapes and all that goes with it. The

Steffey garage was featured in a recent issue of Garage Magazine. Their

Packard, Chevy, and Auburn add to the beauty. New member Ginger Nardini-McLean and her husband

John brought their stunning 1949 Woodie station sedan (recently repainted) and it suffered a meltdown of the left rear brake on the way to the Steffey residence. Catherine and Jim Woolsey were riding “sweep”, saw thick smoke coming from the wheel, and warned Ginger to stop. They were able to limp the Packard to a nearby gas station where John dealt with the difficult job of getting the car hauled back to Clairemont later in the day. But, as is always the case club members stepped in to help and they were still able to enjoy the tour and return safely home. Are you ever truly alone when you own a Packard?

The Packard driving the longest distance for our tour belongs to

Connie and Ralph McNeil, who drove all the way from their ranch outside Campo, bringing two friends who are also antique car owners, and driving their “youngest” collector car, their beautiful 1927 Phaeton. Recently updated with a new radiator (with a thin veneer of the original ’27 radiator cleverly attached to the front), the car drove like a champ. A little coolant leak pops up? No problem…Ralph whips out his wrench, one crank and it is all fixed.

Other guests include Steve Ross’ in-laws

Brian and Diane Kruze, with the Mercedes Benz Club of America, Ginger’s nephew Steve, and Schauer's co-worker, Sean McNew. Everyone mingled so well, smiles, laughter, and happy faces all around. It must be noted that this year Steve Ross was mindful of the treacherous step outside the Steffey garage (to Steve only, it seems).

The sad luck award goes to Phil and Heather Pizzuto, and their beautiful Blue Bomb (was there

ever a LESS appropriate name for a car?) *see editor's note. On their way to the meeting place on Highway 76 the master brake cylinder locked up. That ended their hopes of attending, and they were missed.

People took turns riding in the rumble seats, enjoying the

beautiful day, and everywhere we went adoring crowds flocked to our cars offering so many nice words. It is good to take our Packard cars out for a drive. Lunch at the Faulkner Winery was delicious with pleasing ambience.

Many thanks to our gracious hosts, Ron and Cherrie.

WE ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE MERCEDES-BENZ CLUB FOR A PICNIC AND WASH & SHINE SHOW

SUNDAY, 19 MAY 2013

by Steve Ross

Lazy H Ranch - the site of our really big show

If you are an active member, an inactive member, have a show-winning Packard or Mercedes, or a beater trapped in your garage covered in dust. Or if you just purchased your car and want to show it off, or have a car you have been working on and you just want to see another one like it, then this is the event for you! This year we have combined a few events into one. That’s right, a little something for everybody! It’s the 2013 New Member, Old Member, Show and Shine, New Owner, Original Owner, Clean Car or Dirtiest Car. And to give it a twist we have invited our sister club (The San Diego Packard Region) to join us. I know, I know, so what does the Packard Region have to do with the Mercedes-Benz Club? A lot! In the early days of automotive dealerships, Mercedes-Benz partnered up with the Studebaker-Packard dealerships for distribution. Yep that’s right. You had your choice of a Studebaker Lark or a 300SL on the same showroom floor. How’s that for covering your bases? We are looking for a large fun-filled turnout for this event. So dust off that ol’ car of yours, or the new one, and bring it to the Pic-A-Nic. For more info on these two events you can give a call to Steve Ross 619-508-3925. We have another NEW and we think exciting program. Bring a friend who has a Mercedes-Benz and is not a member of the MBCA and your cost for the event is one half price. Yes, you Packard folks can get this credit as well!

LA JOLLA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE by Steve Ross

Richard Schauer and his 1934 5-Passenger Standard Eight Sedan were given the second place award in the pre-war production class closed. Based on my observations and from attending the Pebble Beach and Amelia Island concours for the past six years, the quality of the automobiles at La Jolla this year was extremely high. Competition was tough and a car had to be in immaculate condition to win an award. The judges were more than an hour late in completing their selections for the Best in Show awards and other special awards. One of the Packard winners has won awards at Pebble Beach, Amelia Island and St. Johns! More about that beauty later.

First in class went to a freshly restored 1932 Nash owned by PI San Diego Region new member Gary Marchetti of Vista who is also restoring his 1931 Packard “826” Sedan. The word is out that the Packard will be ready for its first show about 2 years from now. Look Out!

Todd and Debbie Schonenberg’s 1939 Packard Super 8 Touring Sedan (above).

All the hard work paid off as they were awarded third place in Class. As usual, Richard gets to pose with the beautiful ladies. Straight out of 1942 is this lovely model handing Richard his well-deserved award. Note the shades as he does not want to be recognized by his street name, as you know who.

People's Choice went to this beauty, a 1929 “640” Runabout owned by Richard Comstock (Nipomo, CA). The photo does not do this automobile justice. The two-tone purple color scheme was really, really nice. An "unofficial report" I received related that there was a big discussion about whether this was an “official” Packard color or not. Knowledgeable judges pointed out that one could get any color they wanted in 1929. In fact if you had the money you could get just about anything your heart desired. I wonder if this may have prevented the car from winning another award such as first in class. Comstock’s Packard has been recognized at Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, St John's, and Packards International Membership Meet.

This 1934 Packard Twelve Convertible Coupe was awarded the Reserve Best in Show. The owner of this magnificant Packard is our PI Region's own Doug Skeen of Vista. All of the Packards at the La Jolla Concours this year were absolutely top of the line automobiles.

The Robert Turnquist Award for best Packard was awarded to this 1952 Two Door fast-back body by Pininfarina, owned by Carl Schneider. It was definitely an eye-catcher. According to the website, this is one of three Packards made and they were known as Parisians. Ooh-la-la! In summary, Packard did quite well at the La Jolla Show this year and our PI San Diego Region did exceptionally well. Congrats to Todd, Richard, Gary and Doug!

SAN DIEGO PACKARD DEALERSHIPS by Brian Wagner

There were three larger Packard dealerships in the San Diego area: Jordan Motor Sales Company, located in downtown San Diego at 1372 Kettner Blvd; A.W. Peterson in Oceanside at 225 South Hill (now 263 S. Coast Highway) and another Jordan Motor Sales Company in Escondido at 125 North Broadway. I have included photos of the current businesses at these addresses. At least two of the three, albeit remotely, still have automobile connections.

1899 – 1958: For six decades, Packard helped define innovation in the American auto industry. Even on the dealership level, a Packard dealer was the first to put gasoline pumps on the curb and attendants in uniform. Per their written guidelines, the dealership experience was based on treating every customer as an exceptional individual: each customer was a distinguished personage, a person of real eminence. It was a relationship of personal service based on respect, courtesy, and trust. As the Packard automobile set standards for prestige, engineering and style, so did the dealerships live up to the same world class standards and made treating people with respect the core of the customer experience.

LA JOLLA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE and the

YELLOW PERIL by Steve Ross

In the event that anyone is wondering where the Yellow Peril was for that lovely day at the Concours d’Elegance, it was there as evidenced by the photo below. Once again the Peril crapped on the show field. It no longer embarrasses me; it just is a pain in the butt to get it going again. On the bright side, I had a spare, a jack, lug wrench and everything I needed to fix the problem; but I called AAA anyway in order to gain more attention. The San Diego Police, concours security and even the head dude were involved before it was all over. The AAA guy got into the show free! The Peril and I were totally ignored the entire day and only one kind soul, our very own Fred Puhn, came by to talk to me. Thank you Fred. When Fred left so did I, and never went back. Who wants to answer all of those questions?! To make the whole ordeal worse, we were parked under a tree next to the McLaren Race car folks. Yes, a bird did poop on it. We were truly a thorn among the roses!

Note the picture is suitable for framing. The Yellow Peril's concours days may be over. Maybe it will live up to its name “a Touring Sedan.” The Yellow Peril is like a bucking horse, by God you never give up 'til one of you is broken or busted.

SELECTED SHORTS – LINCOLN HIGHWAY’S JUNGLE PARK INN – US AUTO TOUR 2nd in a 3 part series

Contributed by Sean McNew Last month I detailed how operating Jungle Park Inn on Lincoln Highway was a full-time family affair leaving little option for family trips. The low travel winter months in Pennsylvania finally afforded an opportunity for the family to get way from working the inn and hit the open road to see the rest of the country in late 1946. Setting out in a 1940 Chevrolet Master Deluxe 4 door sedan, my great-grandparents Benjamin Saunders and Verna Blanche McNew, my great-grandmother Minnie Hess, great-aunt Isabella Zimmerman, and another family friend all piled into the car for what would turn into a two-month long car tour covering some 9,000 miles. I’ve transcribed the news print to convey the full adventure. March 1947 Mrs. B. S. McNew Gives Rapid Fire Account of Experiences on Winter California Trip Marooned During Snow Storm. AAA Membership Found Valuable. Encounter with Friendly Burros. Gas Tanks Explode. By Mrs. B.S. McNew Jungle Park, Fayetteville We joined the Chambersburg Motor Club not long ago and I want to tell you that we appreciate our AAA membership. We have recently returned from a trip to California, going about nine thousand miles. Our party included my husband, our daughter Mrs. Paul Zimmerman of Ortanna, PA; Mrs. Minnie Hess of Waynesboro, Mrs. Lillie Houser of Chambersburg and myself. We left Jungle Park, east of Fayetteville, which my husband and I operate, and traveled south without any worries until we neared the Tennessee border, where it was discovered that our owner’s card for the car was missing. This was our first chance to use AAA service, and so we headed for the nearest AAA Club. The manager there called the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue for us, and asked that a duplicate be sent. We gave an address of a friend in San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Roy Zarza, a former resident of Waynesboro, and our duplicate card reached us there the second day after our arrival. From San Antonio we traveled into Old Mexico, had no difficulties in crossing the border and drove as far as Monterrey. The trip was most interesting, wonderful roads, huge mountains. The weather, however, was unusually cold. Coming back into the United States was harder than leaving this country. Before we were admitted we had to unpack, repack, unpack and repack until the customs officials were finally satisfied we had no contraband and allowed us to proceed. Our next encounter with the unusually cold weather in Texas at that time was while we were journeying towards California. There had been no snow or ice in that particular section previously for fifteen or twenty years, but we became snow bound for two nights between two mountains in the vicinity of Sanderson, Texas, and only made a new start after we wore out a set of (snow) chains. Further adventure came to us at San Diego, where we stopped to do some sight-seeing. The first night of our stay in a cabin camp, three large supply gas tanks nearby exploded, caught fire, and injured several persons. Heavy electric current wires, broken by the explosion, fell across the cabins in which we were staying, and that night we went back to old fashioned candle light. That should have been enough excitement but as we continued our trip after the stay in San Diego, we saw three accidents involving large trucks, a trolley crash and a motorcycle burn to nothing.

Then to Los Angeles and Hollywood, were we spent a week. The movie center was aglow with Christmas decorations, which were very beautiful. The display at Beverly Hills was called Santa Claus Lane. Our varied sightseeing here took us to Santa Anita Race Track1, to Forest Lawn Memorial Park where 24 persons were being buried in one day, to a Tom Breneman program2, to the Earl Carroll Theatre3 and…Santa Monica Beach…homes of the movie stars. After leaving movie land, we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and the Oakland Bridge on our way into San Francisco. Our night visit to Chinatown, beautifully lighted, is one of our most memorable recollections. Having traveled the southern route west, we decided to follow the northern route on our return trip. We saw the desert and petrified forests. As we were driving along on the desert we saw ahead two burros, waiting patiently until we came abreast of them. Very friendly, they stopped so that we could take their pictures and enjoy the tidbits we gave them.

Everywhere the roads were wonderful. High, treeless, stone-faced mountains! Canyons and gorges! Time and miles passed by quickly and soon we were in Kewanee, Illinois for a stop-over visit; and then in Canton, Ohio. We had a wonderful time, following the route laid out for us by the AAA. Except for one flat tire, we had no car trouble of any kind.

Desert friends. Mrs. Minnie Hess and Mrs. Verna McNew meet friendly burros along the roadside in January 1947. While a road trip like this may not seem notable in today’s modern age, five people traveling on a US-wide auto tour was most assuredly newsworthy material for the local papers. Absent modern interstates, they were able to cover an amazing number of miles in the given timeframe and spoke favorably as to the road conditions they encountered. From the above narration, it’s difficult to discern whether or not my great-grandparents drove the Lincoln Highway in it’s entirety from San Francisco back to Fayetteville, PA, but there’s no doubt they used a significant portion to traverse the US just as it was intended. A host of changes would be coming to part of Pennsylvania’s Lincoln Highway in 1948. This would put Jungle Park in a hole that challenged Ben & Verna’s business which will be detailed in next month’s Selected Shorts. Notes: 1.) Santa Anita Race Track was Sea Biscuit’s spectacular and last win of the horse’s career in 1940. 2.) Tom Breneman, born in Waynesboro, PA, was a nationally syndicated 1940’s radio personality that broadcast his radio program from Breneman’s Restaurant/radio studio off Sunset Boulevard until his death in 1948. 3.) The Earl Carroll Theatre was a glamorous supper club-theatre on Sunset Boulevard that emblazoned the famous words "Through these portals pass the most beautiful girls in the world" over the doors of the entrance, but was sold in 1948 after Earl Carroll’s death in the United Airlines Flight 624 crash.

Come be Part of the Great Packard Weekend!!!

Friday, June 14, 2013: Packard Night @ Cruisin’ Grand in Escondido Saturday, June 15, 2013: Lunch at the San Diego Yacht Club and attend the Wooden Boat Festival We all need a reason to get behind the wheel of our Packards so this weekend we'll do it in spades. On Friday, at 4:30pm we will meet in Escondido at 3rd and Ivy to line up to parade down Grand Avenue into Cruisin’ Grand for our special parking that we receive as featured guests at for the evening. See the next page for more details and the sign up form. Then on Saturday morning, June 15th our North County members will meet at the Macaroni Grill at North County Fair Mall at 10:30 a.m. to caravan down to Pt. Loma for a 12:00 lunch at the San Diego Yacht Club on Point Loma at 1050 Anchorage Lane (others can drive directly to the Club.) We will have special reserved parking for our Packards at the Club and then after lunch walk over to the 22nd Annual Koehler Kraft Wooden Boat Festival. At the Festival we will see more than 80 wooden craft, ranging from row boats to regal schooners. This will give you an opportunity to be thankful that you bought a Packard and not a wooden boat! Please see the accompanying page for more details about the lunch and Wooden Boat Show on June 15th. This weekend offers something for every member. Come out, enjoy driving your Packard (or talk about driving your Packard), and meet other Packard enthusiasts. For questions about Cruisin’ Grand contact Mark Burnside, 619.322.9340 or [email protected], and for the SDYC event contact Marjo Miller, 619.226.2747 or [email protected]

HISTORIC LINCOLN HIGHWAY TOUR June 21 –June 30

by Steve Ross

Heny Joy’s Packard Twin Six that is scheduled to make an appearance at the Lincoln Highway Celebration. (Courtesy of the Lincoln Highway Association) Two Packard cars owned by the Joy family will also participate. The official 1914 Lincoln Highway Packard used by Henry B. Joy, now owned by a private collector in Santa Clara, Calif., will participate on the first day of the West Tour from Lincoln Park in San Francisco. A 1915 Packard from the National Packard Museum in Warren, Ohio does not run, but will be brought to Kearney for the Official Centennial Celebration by Passport Transport, an official tour sponsor. As of mid April 2013, nine Packards have signed up for the tour. Five are coming from the East and four from the west. Six of the nine are pre-war with the oldest being a 1932 Model “903” 4-door Open Touring Sedan. A 1925 Ford Model T Coupe is participating on the San Francisco to Kearney trip, which is the oldest automobile signed up for the trip thus far that is being driven. This should be interesting! The oldest automobile participating is a 1913 Stoddard Dayton that is being trailered from the East. The four Packards driving from the west are Mark Burnside's 1955 Clipper Custom; Steve Ross with that infamous 1939 Super Eight; Jay Johnson in his 1941 Club Coupe; and Curtis Buck (PI SoCal Region) driving a 1932 "902". Also participating in the adventure is a familiar former PI San Diego Region member, Jack Heacock, and his 560SL Mercedes-Benz.

This 1934 Model 1107 Formal Sedan is an East Coast entry. This looks like a concours car to me.
