Becoming More Like Dad

The older I get, the more like my father I become. I am starting to look more and more like him in the mirror. Whether it’s from his DNA or living with him for all those years, I have become a “chip off the old block”:

1. I have my Dad’s energy. Marvin Clipp was a man in constant motion. He could not sit still for long periods of time. Just like me.

2. I have my Dad’s love for sports and fitness. Not only did he take me to endless ballgames as a child, but he was a long-distance runner throughout his entire life. He won the “Turkey Trot” cross country race at Carson-Newman College his freshman year and was a Top Ten finisher in the 75-79 age group of the Monument Avenue 10K. My Dad coached me all the way to the state cross country championship final my senior year. Even now I love to run and to swim, six days a week.

3. I have my Dad’s need to keep the grass cut. He was obsessed about keeping the yard perfectly manicured, and he was very particular about how to cut and weed-eat it. I remember how irritating that was to me. Now I wonder where I get that from?

4. I have my Dad’s love for people. As an elementary school principal, he loved kids. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. He never met a stranger.

5. I have my Dad’s love for church. As a bi-vocational minister, he felt at home in the house of God among other Christians who loved the Lord. In fact, he was by far happiest at church! During these Sundays of COVID-19, I have felt the sting of isolation from my church family. I can assure you that I much prefer being with you all and seeing your smiles on Sundays. I look forward to gathering in worship together soon.

How are you like your father? My father died from Alzheimer’s Disease in May 2015, but there is not a single day that passes without thinking about him.

This Father’s Day I will pause to remember him and to thank God for His life and continuing influence. With-out a doubt, he is still in my bones.

Our church expresses sympathy to the Family of Scott and Jodi Lowe upon the death of Scott’s mother, Patsy Lowe, on June 14. A Celebration of Life Service for her will be held in Washington, NC, on Friday, June 19.

This class has been meeting since 2005.

PieceMakers Ministry

Our PieceMakers have been busy making pillows for children coming to Johnston Health Clayton Hospital. To date they have made 33 pillows! Our prayer is that these pillows will provide comfort and security to the children.

Our PieceMakers will also be making masks for our church family & friends, including Clayton Area Min-istries. If you would like to make some masks or need a pattern, please contact Martha Wall or Phyllis Crane. Patterns and materials will be available after Wednes-day, June 10, outside the church office. (Open Office hours are Monday & Tuesday 8:30-5:00 Wednesday’s 8:30-12:30)

Regathering Survey Reminder

On June 16 every church family should have received an email that included a brief congregational survey for every household to complete. The survey will help the Church Council to plan for resuming Sunday worship services. If you have not already submitted your completed survey, please do so by Wednesday, June 24. Hard copies of the survey will be mailed to households who do not have email addresses.

Prayer For Sunday School Teachers

Dear Father in heaven, how I thank You for those that have been called

by You to minister to our Sunday School classes.

I pray that each one would be filled with the Holy Spirit and have a deep

desire and ability to guide our members in their charge, into a thorough

knowledge of the Word of God and the plan of Salvation. Give them the

ability and understanding to guide our members that they teach along

the Christian pathway, with doctrinally sound teaching.

I pray that each teacher will recognize the vital role they play in the spir-

itual development of those in their charge, and of the important role and

responsibility they have, in laying a firm and sure spiritual foundation for

their lives.

Equip each one I pray, with a desire to study Your Word for themselves,

so that they too may grow in grace and increase in their knowledge and

love of the Lord Jesus. And I pray that by their example, the children,

youth and adults that they teach will also develop a desire to have their

own personal walk with the Lord Jesus.

And so Lord, I pray that you would use each one to encourage the clas-

ses they teach of the importance of reading the Word of God, studying

the Bible and learning the Scriptures for themselves, so that they too

may mature in the faith and be enabled to stand firm in a world that

seems to have forgotten the God Who created them. May our Sunday

School classes be places where the Lord Jesus is lifted high. In Jesus'

WEDNESDAY TAILGATE DINNERS

On Wednesday Nights during the month of June if you drive by the church between 5-6:30 pm you might just find a group of the finest youth around Clayton tailgating in the parking lot! In order to keep fellowship going during this pandemic, our youth are invited to pick up their own dinner and bring it to the parking lot to catch up by social distancing. Each week we will rotate between our high schoolers and middle schoolers in order to keep numbers to a minimum.

Last week we kicked off this event with our high schoolers, it was so nice to see familiar faces in person! We even met a new friend who attends the local high school and happened to be passing through with his basketball. He spent time showing us a few tricks and introducing himself.

If you see us out there and you are passing by, be sure to give us a honk and a wave! We miss you all and hope to see you soon.

This is the last week to register for Virtual Bible School. As Knights of North Castle, we will be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Join in the virtual fun as we venture beyond space on a quest for the King’s Armor. Each night, we will armor up with the Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Justice, Shoes of Peace, Shield of Faith and Helmet of Salva-tion. VBS is the week of July 12-16 with a Facebook live each night at 6:00 to kick off the night’s theme, lesson and activities. Participants will receive materi-als for craft, activities and a CD. Please register each child in your household who will participate.
