At the interface between architecture and water:Drainage solutions from a single competent source

At the interface between architecture and water, ACO supplies drainage system solu-tions from a single competent source. Wherever water has to be collected, cleaned, held and released – from Olympic stadiums to shower channels – ACO has developed intel-ligent drainage solutions with integrated functions. BAU 2013 will see ACO present new products in the important construction areas involving cellars, open spaces, roofs and facades, and bathrooms. Another new launch in 2013: the ACO app for architects and planners.

The ACO cellar protection system consisting of inset cellar windows, the ACO Therm Block installation and insulation panel, pressure-watertight light shafts and backflow pro-tection, is now rounded off by the height-adjustable and fixed raising elements for ACO Therm light shafts. The height of the light shafts can now be adjusted by over 80 cm.

And with the Self drainage product line, ACO has launched a line drainage system for the first time specially designed for use in private housing applications. The system is characterised by a new range of design choices and simple installation. The new inno-vative plastic grating in this product line has been registered for a patent because of the new anti-slip structure on its surface. For the open spaces segment, ACO presents more channels and gratings classified under the overall heading “Light and Design”: the ACO Freestyle cast iron gratings can be customised to match customers’ specific designs. The prize-winning ACO Sideline combines inconspicuous drainage through a slotted channel with integrated lighting. ACO’s B 125 manhole cover made of extremely tough polypropylene is another innovation: this manhole cover satisfies DIN EN 124 but only weighs approx. 9 kg, and is therefore a very interesting alternative to comparable designs made of cast iron and concrete.

The drainage of roofs and facades has to satisfy challenging planning specifications. This is because around 50 % of rainfall collects at the interface between buildings and the ground. If the roof of a building is inappropriately drained, it can even jeopardise the

structural stability of a building. ACO’s facade and flat roof drainage product lines pro-vide highly efficient drainage systems for numerous applications, as well as supporting planning activities.

The bathroom display area on the stand presents a new product in the ACO Shower-Drain product line: the new ACO ShowerDrain SE channel has a slotted top section made of stainless steel with a trapezoidal extension in the middle holding the drain. This extension can be covered by either the same flooring as the rest of the shower or with a uniform stainless steel cover.

All of the new ACO products, each of the related contacts, direct access to planning documentation, links to specification texts and technical drawings for planning activities can now also be accessed via the new ACO app for architects and planners. This is a real quantum jump in communications: the whole ACO information and service package now accessible via mobile phone at every construction site.

NEW systems for cellars:

Raising elements for ACO Therm light shafts – height-adjustable and fix

Two new components for the ACO Therm light shaft system considerably simplify exe-cution planning, and shorten installation times: the new raising elements for ACO Therm light shafts enable the height to be adjusted by over 80 cm.

The raising elements are manufactured from white, tough, hollow-chamber profiles and are supplied in a completely pre-assembled condition, i.e. with a rugged grid mounting and a wall connection profile. The height-adjustable raising element with a profile height of 34 cm enables infinite height adjustment and can therefore be aligned perfectly with the surface gradient on site. No fastening is required other than bolting it to the light shaft. To adjust the raising element to the light shaft depth or the specific wall construc-tion, simply shorten or remove the side panels in the raising elements which are sup-plied in a range of sizes. This enables the customisation of the system at all times to the specific conditions of each building facade. Thanks to its static properties, there is no need to use a stiffening frame in many cases.

If a large adjustment in height is required, the height-adjustable element can be com-bined with the fixed raising elements for ACO Therm light shafts. Thanks to the ease with which the removable grey grid mounting can be dismantled, and the sophisticated tongue and groove system, up to three fixed raising elements can be combined with a height-adjustable element to achieve adjustments of over 80 cm. Because of the rugged construction, it is even possible to drive a car over the shaft depending on the size of the element. The raising elements are available for all standard light shaft sizes.

The ACO Therm cellar protection system consisting of a flood-proof inset cellar window, the Therm Block installation and insulation panel, the pressure-watertight light shaft, and the backflow protection units for light shafts and cellars, ensures that cellars are effectively protected in the event of external flooding and backflow. The watertight cellar window directly foamed into the insulation layer boasts toughened glass, and addi-tional locking points with mushroom-shaped locking pins to provide additional class WK1

burglar protection. Despite all of their technical sophistication, the windows still look like attractive house windows. The quality of the window has been tested and certified by the renowned ift (Institute for Window Technology e.V.) in Rosenheim, Germany. The water-tight inset cellar window in the ACO Therm Block is ideal for new buildings as well as for building renovation.

NEW products for paved outdoor areas:

The ACO Self drainage system for private houses

The new ACO Self line drainage system was specially designed for the needs of private houses. With its market launch in January 2013, ACO will produce a channel system de-signed for the first time for private housing properties. The ACO Self line channel system boasts a modular system for customised design and is very easy to install.

A modular system comprising two channel bodies and eight gratings made of different materials can be put together in any combination to suit every construction situation. There are two different channel bodies: the ACO Self Euroline made of polymer concre-te, and the ACO Hexaline 2.0 made of plastic. The different gratings are suitable for both types of channel and are made of galvanised and powder-coated steel, polished stain-less steel, or cast iron – giving a wide choice of 16 high quality drainage solutions with attractive looks. An outstanding new innovation is the plastic grating with the unique Mi-crogrip structured surface (patent-applied for) which guarantees a highly slip-resistance surface even under wet conditions.

Thanks to the pre-fabricated cutting guides, the plastic channel bodies can be sawn into half metre long elements for precise on-site adjustment during installation. The benefits of the polymer concrete channel body are the smooth surface and the V-profile for high flow speeds and an associated high drainage capacity. www.aco-hochbau.de

The ACO B 125 manhole cover – in plastic

parable cast iron and concrete designs. PP is lightweight, temperature-resistant and dirt-repellent. The new manhole covers are maintenance-free and vandal-proof thanks to the boltless locking system made of extremely tough and wear-resistant plastic which is also rugged enough to withstand road traffic.

When combined with the well-proven concrete casting frame, the installation of the black plastic manhole cover is a very attractive solution in landscaped open spaces in particu-lar, as well as private housing. With the development of this new component, ACO Civil Engineering has expanded its spectrum of products with a manhole cover specifically designed for pavements, pedestrian precincts, yards and car parks, and which also adds another valuable link to the existing ACO System Chain. www.aco-tiefbau.de

ACO Stormbrixx infiltration set – the compact infiltration system

Allowing rainwater to percolate into the ground on one’s own property not only makes a significant contribution to groundwater regeneration, it can also save money at many locations.

With its ACO Stormbrixx infiltration set, ACO Civil Engineering now supplements the cus-tomised and contract-related modular stormwater management systems with a compact construction set for rainwater infiltration on small plots of land. The basic elements of the ACO Stormbrixx infiltration set weigh 10 kg and measure 1,200 x 600 x 342 mm. These are simply slotted together to form a block with a net water storage volume of approx. 3.3 m3.

The brick-bond assembly of the basic elements and the clever plug-in concept give the final infiltration block exceptional stability and strength. The ability of the basic elements to be stacked tightly together reduces the transport costs compared to conventional sys-tems, and therefore also reduces CO2 emissions. This remarkable stackability reduces by more than half the space the system requires in warehouses or when delivered to the construction site. www.aco-tiefbau.de

The ACO Self modular system means that private home owners can now also benefit from the well-proven ACO quality. The anti-slip plastic grating also makes drainage even safer than before.

The ACO plastic B 125 manhole cover weighing only 9 kg is a rugged alter-native to cast iron manhole covers.

With its ACO Stormbrixx infiltrati-on set, ACO Civil Engineering now supplements the customised and contract-related modular stormwater management systems with a compact construction set for rainwater infiltrati-on on small plots of land.

NEW in the bathroom segment:

The ACO ShowerDrain SE channel with tileable or uniform cover

The new ACO ShowerDrain SE channel adds another innovative product to ACO Civil Engineering’s bathroom drainage range: the shower is drained by an optically inconspi-cuous and discreet slotted channel. The slotted channel is a crucial element in the ar-chitecture of a barrier-free bathroom – by providing an optically elegant solution reduced to a barely visible shower drainage system.

The body of the channel is made in one piece with a peripheral, sanded thin-bed flange and a wall lip at the back and a central outlet socket suitable for all pipe push-socket systems. The channel body is available in lengths of 700 – 1200 mm and installation heights of 64 – 90 mm (top edge of the flange). Two adjustable feet simplify adjustment to the floor level at each site. No complicated and time-consuming assembly work is required.

The cover – either the uniform or the tileable version – and the odour trap can be easily removed so that the drain can be simply cleaned with a cleaning spiral. With an outflow capacity of 0.3 l/s (18 l/min) without water trap column, 0.5 l/s (30 l/min) with 20 mm water trap column pursuant to DIN EN 1253, this discreet slotted channel drainage sys-tem boasts almost the same performance as conventional models despite being much less conspicuous. This therefore opens up new possibilities for designing the bathroom flooring.

The ACO ShowerDrain bathroom drainage range marries award-winning design with well-proven ACO drainage technology. By reducing the design to just a few materials, and dispensing with all optical and physical barriers, users benefit from all of the free-doms opened up by completely barrier-free bathroom design possibilities.

Efficient roof and facade drainage

ACO facade drainage: backflow buffer for heavy rain

Barrier-free construction on the one hand, and protecting buildings from dampness and the associated damage on the other hand, can now be combined in a professional drainage solution. It is particularly important for pooled water to be drained away from vulnerable facade and door zones. ACO facade channels provide an extremely effective system with a built-in backflow buffer to protect buildings from sudden heavy downpours. When ACO facade drainage systems are used, it is possible to reduce the door threshold height stipulated in DIN 18195, Part 5, to 5 cm. The channel systems operate at two levels: they drain the surface, as well as draining the water which collects in the underlying drainage layer. The high hydraulic capacity of the ACO facade drainage sys-tem was proven on an LGA-certified test bed. The advantages for planners: the systems boast all of the technical specifications for barrier-free thresholds.

Planners and architects can choose from the ACO Profiline, ACO Roofline and ACO Greenline systems. The ACO Profiline channel system is characterised by the easy way it can be installed: each element – already pre-assembled and without any loose indi-vidual parts – is available with either variable heights or fixed installation heights. The tongue and groove plug-in system enables the elements to be joined up very quickly. The ACO Profiline boasts a variable installation height so that the height can be adjus-ted from above with a screwdriver even after installation. This allows adjustment to the nearest millimetre after it has been installed. The Profiline range now also has a new addition: a special renovation channel with an installation height of 3 cm and an integra-ted gravel ledge.
