Laden with treasures and an air of anticipation, intrepid explorers crossed continents, paving the way for the Silk Road. Trading a new and exciting blend of goods and stories, tastes and sense opened up to a world of intriguing and exotic delights.

For more than 1,000 years the Silk Road has linked Asia with the Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by regions remarkable for their textural heritage and bordered by the Caspian Sea, from which this collection takes its name.

Igniting imaginations and a sense of adventure, the romance of faraway places captured in printed cottons, warp-printed silks and hand painted papers have influenced the way we decorate our homes. These cherished items have inspired Sanderson Caspian, a captivating collection new for SS20.

Featuring three beautiful embroideries, nine authentic prints, eight dramatic weaves and 13 striking wallpapers, Caspian’s dynamic colour palette is influenced by natural dye colours such as Madder, Indigo, Turmeric and Saffron running through to the subtle tones of Linen, Ivory and Charcoal. Incorporating a blend of new and archive designs on natural cloths, technique rich prints and the finest embroideries sit alongside wallpapers enhanced by subtle mica and metallic highlights.

Rebecca Craig, head of design at Sanderson says, “Caspian is a celebration of country house style and the impact trade routes, specifically the Silk Road, have had on design. We’ve included a glorious mix of cultural styles from Chinoiserie to Uzbek and from Indian to English country house, fusing exotic influences with a fluid versatility. One of the great things about this collection is that it’s open to interpretation, allowing customers to create their own unique look from the colours, chintzes, ikats, Indo-Persian miniatures and Ottoman embroideries that led the way for a more playful and opulent approach to interior decoration.”

CASPIAN WALLPAPERS Paving the way for a new and exciting blend of tastes and textures, the Silk Road opened up a world of intriguing and captivating delights. Linking Asia with the Mediterranean Sea, Sanderson Caspian celebrates the colours, chintzes, ikats, Indo-Persian and Ottoman designs that travelled along this historic trading route.

A glorious mix of cultural styles, Sanderson Caspian’s 13 wallpapers pave the way for a playful and opulent approach to interior decorating, fusing exotic influences with a fluid versatility.

MaduraiIn a fresco style and reminiscent of Indian block prints, this mirrored ogee trellis wallpaper is filled with decorative damask detail. In a range of beautiful chalky shades, a very subtle metallic highlight features on the Stone colourway.

Available in three colourways: Indigo, Stone and Lemon

KalapiA powerful symbol of royalty and faithfulness, Kalapi’s characterful peacocks with their glorious metallic tailfeathers stand proudly on this striking wallpaper, which was inspired by a fragment of 19th century Indian chintz from the Sanderson archive.

Cantaloupe A truly stunning representation of exotic fruits inspired by damask influences and botanical drawing, Cantaloupe is a wide-with wallpaper with a wonderfully contemporary look. A hand printed textural effect adorns the design’s chalky opaque ground and a beautiful metallic shimmer features across the Bastille and Mudstone colourways.

Pamir GardenInspired by a document in the Sanderson archive titled ‘Animal Kingdom’, Pamir Garden is a fantastical wallpaper that reflects the 1970’s fashion for exotic patterns and global cultures. Representative of a Persian garden, this oasis scene of floral sprigs, stylised trees, tigers and antelopes has been repainted in a fresco style with a crackle glaze effect in the ground to give a time-worn look.

Available in two colourways: Teal Peacock and Cream/Nettle

HakimiA technique rich wallpaper of stylised pods, flowers and leaves, this hand painted Sanderson design has a lovely textural feel across its statement motifs.

Available in three colourways: Emerald, Ebony and Ash Grey

Caspian StrieThis fabulously versatile wide-width wallpaper is the perfect co-ordinate to the entire Caspian range. Gravure printing shows the full tonal effect of the design which opens up a world of decorating possibilities across its six colourways.

Anaar Tree This beautifully proportioned pomegranate tree wallpaper is hand drawn and edged with a fine decorative border. AndharaA Sanderson classic, this archive wallpaper’s birds of paradise, delicate dragonflies, plump peonies and dainty butterflies have been repainted by hand, showing a lovely gradation of colour across a textural, mottled ground.


The Teal/Turmeric and Teal/Cream colourways have a subtle mica ground and the Dove/Cream colourway has mica highlights across the birds and flowers.

Anaar PrintA symbol of life and meaning Pomegranate in Hindi, these stylised fruits and leaves display an organic, block printed look. This lovely all-over design is suitable for both drapes and upholstery.

Anaar Tree PrintInspired by finely drawn Persian miniatures, plump pomegranates hang from hand painted branches amongst this beautifully shaped tree. Printed on a lightly textured linen/viscous cloth, this design is named after the Persian word for pomegranate.

AndharaThis classic archive print of abundant flowers and foliage is sprinkled with delicate dragonflies and fluttering butterflies in a nod towards its Chinoiserie roots. A dual-purpose design, Andhara is available on cotton/linen and satin cloths across four colourways.

Hakimi With a chunky, hand crafted appearance, this beautiful linen cloth is embroidered with large scale interpretations of florals and fans.

CASPIAN WEAVESWith a glorious mix of cultural styles, Caspian’s seven weaves include stylised flowers and striking ikats across a colour palette of Indigo to Sumac and Blush and Ash.

DarterAn excellent coordinate with a fine, vertical strie running through, this classic textural semi-plain from Sanderson is perfect for drapes and upholstery. Darter’s cotton/linen mix is also reversible.

MadhuFeaturing striking, large-scale chevrons, Madhu’s bold design displays a delicate graduation of colour. A contrasting chenille outline adds textural detail and a viscose yarn gives a very subtle sheen.

Khira A striking multi-weave and an excellent colour carrier, this textural chevron design displays an almost 3D effect across its three vibrant and rich colourways.

MeruThis classic ikat spot takes its name from the Meru region of Kenya and displays a fine woven design that contrasts against the chunky slub in the ground.

Kelim Inspired by the pattern used on traditional Turkish rugs, Kelim’s rich tones layer to create a multicoloured look. A raised chenille pattern adds texture to the cream ground of this striking upholstery weight fabric.

BarodaTwisted space-dyed yarns give a mottled appearance to this natural looking weave, named after the Indian city of Baroda. Woven with a two coloured tile design, a viscose thread adds a very slight iridescence to this beautiful fabric.

TamizartTaken from the Sanderson archive, this Indian motif of stylised peacocks, trees and butterflies creates a charming scene. A fine cotton weft introduces a textural detail across this two tone ground.
