MAINTENANT 2018 : a festival to live experiences and a snapshot of creativity to discover

From 5 to 14 October 2018, the Maintenant festival will focus, as usual, on making you (re)discover the city of Rennes and its surroundings, through emerging artistic proposals: ambitious but accessible, monumental or intimate, sound as well as visual, sometimes unusual and often surprising.

Below is the programme of Maintenant 2018, a pioneering and resolutely multidisciplinary festival, which presents a snapshot of contemporary artistic creativity between visual art, music et new technologies.

Deena Abdelwahed (TN)

Deena Abdelwahed is one of the young rising artists of a growing Tunisian underground scene. On March 8, she signed her first album Klabb on the audacious French label InFiné Music (Rone, Apparat and The Hacker). Between electronica, glitch, drum’n’bass or oriental soul, his music dynamites genres by remarkably combining tradition and modernity. Daring the most experimental forms such as pop escapes, she composes strange hymns where electronics flirts with more classical sounds, samples of voices in Arabic, or traditional instruments and rhythms.

Vladimir Ivković (YU/DE)

Vladimir Ivković is an emblematic figure of the Düsseldorf scene where he settled in the 90s, is a resident of the famous Salon des Amateurs, where the most surprising music thrives. Also founder of the Offen Records label and known as one of the best selectors of extravagant music, he does not hide his taste for the offbeat, the eccentric and the bizarre. Vladimir Ivković enthusiastically exudes with sharp selections all that music has produced in its long history: electro, traditional music, psychedelic rock, film music, etc.

Sarah Farina (DE)

Sarah Farina ‘s musical universe is a frenetic ode to the rhythm and seismic potential of the bass! Inspired by the first releases of Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada, it became known behind the consoles of many Berlin clubs. Co-founder of the collective Through My Speakers, she is famous for her agile and dynamic sets where the freshness of her breaks equals the inventiveness of her routines. Lightning-fast, Sarah Farina is unparalleled at taking a room with her in a tornado of explosive and futuristic sounds from the UK funk, garage, hip-hop or RnB.

Nkisi (UK/BE)

Founder of the Non Worldwide collective, bringing together African and diaspora artists, Melika Ngombe Kolongo alias Nkisi offers in her sets and productions a dark music (her latest EP is called, precisely, The Dark Orchestra) with unbridled rhythms and multiple influences, ranging from the most extreme techno to the sound of clubs in West Africa, via ambient layers.

Ronod (FR)

Artist of the abundant Rennes scene, DJ, producer and co-founder of the collective La Tangente, Ronod mixes musical genres without concessions. From house to techno, mixing acid sounds reminiscent of the raves of the 90s with a touch of freshness, it takes us on a real auditory journey. Ronod also forms the duo Raw Signal with Jean Terechkova from Rennaise, who was welcomed at Maintenant 2017.

JASSS (ES)

Fascinated by music and its ability to connect people, JASSS has been rocked by jazz, African and South American rhythms. Resolutely avant-garde and experimental, his first album, Weightless, released on iDEAL Recordings, has been unanimously acclaimed by critics. The Spanish artist, exiled in Berlin, went into techno and beyond to produce these disconcerting but coherent industrial and tribal sounds.

Caterina Barbieri (IT)

Researcher for the Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm and composer, Caterina Barbieri has always been fascinated by the sound of synthesizers, old or new. The cosmic waves generated by these mythical instruments are at the heart of his timeless compositions. They reveal an innate gift for the creation of mental or hypnotic atmospheres. His album Patterns of Consciousness (Important Records, 2017) received an excellent public response and a very good critical feedback.

Flavien Berger (FR)

In 2015, Flavien Berger released Léviathan (Pan European Recording) and invited his world to a psychedelic black festival. 2018 marks his return with a first paradoxical title, Brutalisme, full of love. We find the soft voice, the fragile words, the layers of synthesizers and the sound explorations that make up the richness of this self-taught composer. His arrival in Rennes in the autumn will coincide with the release of his new album, produced between Paris and Brussels.

Marc Melià (ES)

Marc Melià’s album Music For Prophet, an ode to the leading synthesizer of the analog scene, inaugurates the «La sélection de Flavien Berger» collection on the label Les Disques du Festival Permanent. Falling in love with an instrument, composing an album that navigates between science fiction film soundtracks and interstellar dreams and then knitting each piece by hand without going through pre-recorded sequences, the bet was not easy and it was a success.

Golin (JP/BE)

Born in Japan, Golin was introduced to piano and classical music at an early age and studied at the California Institute of the Arts. After her first Momo EP on the Belgian label Midlife Music in 2017, she became an associate artist at Beursschouwburg, a multidisciplinary centre for Brussels arts. His performances are seen as cinematic experiences, perpetually guided by improvisation, surprise and spontaneity. Golin transforms sounds into a dreamlike fantasy with a wide variety of samples and superimposed voices. She also composes soundscapes for installations and works on performances with multidisciplinary creators, choreographers and artists.

Joanna (FR)

After practicing dance, singing and piano as a child, Joanna began writing her own lyrics. Through her songs, this 19-year-old Rennes artist celebrates love, women and their femininity. On March 16, Joanna posted the song Séduction on YouTube. Passionate about images, she accompanies the title with a clip she makes herself. It quickly became viral (more than 160,000 views in a few days), and was spotted and supported by Spotify. Produced by Saavane, the song was then mixed by Grand Marnier (Yelle, Bagarre) and mastered by Pieter De Wagter (Stromae). In October, the Théâtre du Vieux Saint-Étienne will host its very first live performance!

Thomas Laigle (FR)

Amplifying light to listen to it is Thomas Laigle’s fascination that gave birth to his performance m-0-m (a possible acronym for Orchestral-Magnetic Music). He converts the vibratory power of lamps and other light sources into sounds, which he orders to create in real time a music as brutal as it is lyrical, mixing electric noise and technoid rhythmic noise. An immersive installation concert to see and listen to.

Saudaá Group (FR)

Under the name Saudaá Group, Alexis Paul presents a hybrid version of the barrel organ, with MIDI language. At the heart of this proposal, where traditions and new writings coexist, the organ is entirely revisited, from its repertoire to its social and symbolic dimensions. Inspired by the popular heritage of the street organ, it tends to completely renew it and positions itself at the borders of ethnopoetics.

Andreas Trobollowitsch (AT)

Conducted by Andreas Trobollowitsch, Santa Melodica Orchestra is an unusual sound performance performed by twenty participants. Each performer expires in a long flexible tube connected to a melodica and a balloon. This retroactive system activates the melodica and produces arpeggios that are both hypnotic and catchy. The orchestra then transforms itself into a giant mobile organ at the origin of a music as intoxicating as it is whimsical, a demonstration of kinetic virtuosity.

Joasihno (DE)

Attending a performance by Joasihno, a duo composed of Cico Beck (The Notwist) and Nico Serig, is like discovering an amazing instrumentarium, combining analog synthesizers and traditional percussion, sound sculptures and robot musicians. From this heterogeneous assemblage comes a collection of miniatures that are both playful and strange, whose genealogy could range from Moondog to Four Tet. A concert and a miniature and mobile version, Joasihno Mobile Disko, will be presented.

Jason Sharp & Adam Basanta* (CA)

Jason Sharp has established himself as one of the most fascinating figures in new Canadian music with his baritone saxophone. He experiments with the boundaries between the body and technology and uses circular breathing techniques in river compositions. With sound designer Adam Basanta, he works with sound material in real time to modify and amplify the beats of his heart, his breathing and the sound of the instrument. An immersive experience at the confluence of electroacoustic, free jazz and noise music. A concert at the Ateliers du Vent will be followed the day after by a conference-performance.

Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch (FR)

Halfway between classical, contemporary, electronic and pop music, pianist and composer Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch is shaking up the labels with her first album Like Water Through Sand (FatCat Records, 2015) and returns on July 13 with Époques, a warm and spontaneous new album. She transcends the piano through electronics in an intimate and intense exploration of a continuum of subtly entangled sounds. A profoundly organic and non-academic music that she will present in the magnificent setting of the Musée des beaux-arts de Rennes.

Caterina Barbieri, Deena Abdelwahed, Golin, JASSS, Nkisi, Joasihno, Sarah Farina and Vladimir Ivković, are from the SHAPE 2018 selection. The SHAPE platform is an initiative co-financed by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.

*Jason Sharp & Adam Basanta are presented in collaboration with the FFQCD, the Délégation générale du Québec en France, Elektra (Montréal) and Stereolux (Nantes), and with the support of the Institut Français, the City of Rennes & Rennes Métropole.

Lawrence Malstaff (BE), Polygon 02016 FRENCH PREMIERE IN INSTALLATION

With the kinetic installation Polygon 02016, the Belgian artist Lawrence Malstaf plays with the rules of space and geometry. Made up of articulated tubes hanged from thin metal cables, this impressive structure is extremely light despite its size. It is subtly animated by a mechanism of motors and counterweights that makes it move. The mathematical grace of Polygon 02016 lies in the way it offers the audience to apprehend the space in a playful way. It adjusts its shape and its balance, creating a geometrical landscape that moves in a surprisingly natural and organic way.

Already welcomed at the festival Now in 2016 with Seventeen, Nils Völker returns to Rennes with two amazing inflatable sculptures. Known for his live kinetic installations lighter than air, some choregraphies of large-scale air cushions or the display of moving plastic bags, he will present Multiple of Five at the Grand Cordel Mjc and Paddling Pools, currently being created at the Châteaugiron Art Centre - Les 3 CHA. Nils Völker’s poetic installations oscillate between playful expression and criticism of our industrial society.

Tristan Ménez (FR), Bloom

Who has never dreamt of being able to see the shape of sounds? This gift is what offers you Tristan Ménez. On the brink of the imaginary, this visual experience -located between art and science- creates a ballet of suspended water drops, punctuated by a fascinating choreography made of slowing downs and other optical phenomena. A visual translation of undulations and musical waves. Bloom allows to see sound waves emitted by an ingenious device, made of water jets that react to vibrations spread by a loudspeaker playing infrasounds over a synth pad. Mixed together with a stroboscopic system, the installation freezes the water flux, making visible motions and shapes that are usually intangible.

Teun Vonk / Studio Tony Spark (NL), Physical Mind

Physical Mind is an immersive installation created by Dutch artist Teun Vonk. While in residency at the Chronus Art Center in Shanghai, Vonk came up with an experience that would work on the concepts of physical stimulation through pressure, in order to reduce physical or psychological stress. By applying physical pressure on the body and exposing the participants to a dim light, Teun Vonk’s installation explores the relations between psychic and corporeal states; an original way of bringing scientific and artistic principles together in a unique physical and mental experience.

Musique Meuble (FR), Pianographe

Le Pianographe was created by brothers Florent and Romain Bodart. It was conceived as a clever mix between a Harmonium (an instrument invented in the middle of the 19th Century) and a synthesiser. This outrageous device is the result of a poetic and playful union between tradition and modernity, between the old and the comporary. By inviting the audience to operate the traditional clavier keys, this participatory installation allows to trigger sounds and visual animations at the same time. It creates a sound painting right before our eyes. It also explores the spectras and musical codes of electronic music (techno, electro, etc).

Vincent Broquaire (FR), Clock Work

In his illustration and animation works, Vincent Broquaire ceaselessly questions -with his minimalist and ironic style- the hidden side of our everyday life and the influence of new technologies on our life. He is back in Rennes after drawing the poster of the festival in 2013 (and before presenting a new installation at Les Champs Libres, from mid-December). For the tower of Le Couvent des Jacobins, he has thought of a clock that seems to show the time properly. However a character is stuck inside and aims at controlling it, what makes reading the time impossible, as a farcical and ridiculous metaphor referring to our own relation to time and its acceleration.

Hans-Walter Müller (DE)

Hans-Walter Müller’s work is to be qualified as prolific. Aged of 82, this engineer and architect dedicated his life to inflatable architecture. After graduating from the Darmstadt Polytechnic School (Germany), he enrolls to Paris Fine Arts School and works along renowned personalities such as Jean Prouvé, Ernst May or Raymond Lopez. From his very first inflatable piece until now, the German artist has never stopped reinventing himself nor innovating. Among his works, we can cite: a piece for La Fête de l’Humanité festival, a soft room for a Dalí exhibition at Centre Pompidou, a mobile theater for the Barcelona Olympic Games, etc.

NSDOS (FR)

After graduating from Dance School, NSDOS, aka Kirikoo Des, looked for sounds he could dance to. He therefore has to create his own medium: futuristic instruments assembled through old sound cards, Game Boy emulators, small pieces of metal, dissected then reassembled to create surrealistic machines. Surrounded by all those hybrid tools, he deconstructs the straight anatomy of techno. Invited in 2017 with his performance Tattoo Hackin, he will offer a conference-performance as part of Culture Experience Days, Adami’s program.
