According to Wikipedia Graffiti “(plural of graffito) are writing or

drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or painted illicitly

on a wall or other surface, often within public view.” Zollanvari’s

NEW Graffiti line takes inspiration from ancient Gabbehs (pile rugs

traditionally used as bedding characterized by an abstract design

design motifs of these ancient Gabbehs by giving them a thoroughly

contemporary twist in a combination of cool pastel and zany vibrant

colours. The effect is a thoroughly on-trend carpet suitable today’s

interior design sensibilities. Graffiti Gabbehs are woven using the

finest highland wools from the Zagros mountains in a Kashkuli

quality, named after one of the Ghashghai’ nomadic tribes living in

the Fars province, southeast and northwest of Shiraz, Iran.

Designer carpets on show will include Abrashed and Abstract

Floral Cartouches and Jeziorak designs which are additions to the

Isfahan Collection made in Iran. Other new design carpets made

in Rajasthan, India, are additions to the Kundan Diffusion Koti Silk®

production including Ikat Pendants & Flowers, Chinese Flower

Power and Tiger Ikat. The carpets from the Kundan Silk® Collection,

developed for the US market since the embargo on Iranian products

imposed in 2010, are woven using the most exquisite materials, such

as raw organic and ‘banana’ silk. They are hand-knotted by skilled

artisans and the subtle over-dyeing of the carpets with translucent

colours creates a unique multidimensional shimmering texture.

In 2016 the continuing eclecticism of the company’s production

was recognised when Glow from the Kundan Pure Silk® Collection

won two of the most coveted trophies at the Carpet Design Awards

2016 (DOMOTEX Hanover): ‘Best Innovation’ and ‘Best Liked by

DOMOTEX Visitors’. Glow has also been nominated for a German

Design Award 2017 by the German Design Council who will announce

their results on 24th October 2016.

Further notes for editors

The story of Zollanvari began when Gholam Reza Zollanvari joined

his father’s carpet business in 1947, a legacy that was handed down

from his great grandfather. Initially he focused on the traditional

products of the nomads of South Persia. Those colourful carpets

with high piles, Gabbehs, were knotted only for use in homes as

bedspreads and bedcovers. Appreciation for Gabbehs grew over the

years since they reflected the art, tradition and the aesthetics of the

southern Persian nomads. With the increase in demand for Gabbehs,

Gholam Reza Zollanvari began working with the Ghashghai’ and Luri

Nomads to start weaving new Gabbehs.

In 1985 his son Reza Zollanvari founded the company in Zurich in

order to have direct access to the European market. The company

expanded in 1989 when the weaving of large and room size Gabbehs

began, using naturally dyed, hand-spun wool. This step is now

recognised as a milestone in the history of Persian weaving. The

‘new’ Gabbehs exploded onto the world market, with new colours,

sizes and patterns being woven to satisfy the demands of the

Western markets. Soon Gabbehs became synonymous with the

Zollanvari name and the company’s creative and innovative spirit.

Gholam Reza’s second son, Hamid took over the business in Iran.

A second centre was built, close to Shiraz which brought together

design, dyeing and warehousing under one roof. Washing, finishing,

customer services and shipping were then located in a large

warehouse in Tehran. The sixth generation of Zollanvaris continues
