Sort/Hvid and artist collective The Other Eye of The Tiger (TOETT) challenges what it means to be a martyr. THE MUSEUM OF MARTYRS opens on Thurs-day, May 26th at Staldgade 38, in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District.

Sort/Hvid and artistic collective TOETT inaugurate the Nordic region’s first martyr museum in a disused slaughterhouse in the Meatpacking District in Vesterbro. The exhibition examines why some people choose to die for what they believe in. Our fascination with heroes is not a new phenomenon, and throughout time, we have wondered about the real motives behind martyrdom. Are today’s martyrs different than those of the past and what does it mean to die for one’s faith?

To sacrifice one’s self for the greater causeTHE MUSEUM OF MARTYRS exhibition consists of installations, reproductions of authentic objects, stories of heroism and pictures of martyrs who have sacrificed their lives for a greater cause, such as the brothers Khalid and Brahim El Bakra-ouias, who committed the latest suicide bombings at Brussels airport in Zaventem, on March 22nd.

”In Denmark, we have a hard time imagining dying for a cause. To fly into the Twin Towers, shoot people at the Bataclan or blow one’s self up in Brussels can one do, only with the belief that it will bring about a better world. This is why we are ope-ning a museum where these individuals are included in the exhibition. We are all heroes in our own stories,” says Ida Grarup Nielsen, one of the six artists behind the work.

Our concept of right and wrongSort/Hvid provides the framework for THE MUSEUM OF MARTYRS, which can be experienced either on your own via audio walk or through a guided tour. Sort/Hvid’s artistic director Christian Lollike states:

“THE MUSEUM OF MARTYRS is an important work that turns our notion of right and wrong upside down, which forces us to confront and investigate the motives behind martyrdom.”

THE MUSEUM OF MARTYRS is an exhibition created by TOETT in cooperation with Sort/Hvid and can be visited from May 26th to June 10th during CPH STAGE 2016 at Staldgade 38 in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District.
