You determine the speed
We ensure reliable delivery of your press product throughout Germany. With your selection of the transport network you decide on the speed of delivery that suits your publication.
Transport networks 7
Hot off the press: same-day service
This shipping option within a routing region is
particularly suitable for regional daily newspapers
that have their publications delivered via
Deutsche Post in their main distribution area.
If the items are posted in the respective mail
center on the day of publishing, Deutsche Post
will deliver them within a routing region on the
same day.
Overnight: next-day service
For just a few cents more, you can delay your
editorial deadline. This shipping option within
the high-speed transportation network is ideal
for cross-regional daily newspapers and
magazines containing the latest information.
They are delivered within one day of posting.
Cost-effective: second-day service
The largest proportion of items (mainly
magazines), by far, are shipped via the cost-
effective Express logistics network. They are
delivered within two days of posting.
Addressing – design and positioning are crucial
8 Addressing and labeling
Every year, approximately 1.5 billion press items
are reliably and quickly sorted by Deutsche Post
so that they can be delivered to the readers on
time. The address label plays a central role here.
The design of the labels and the information they
include, along with their position on the items,
are therefore of great importance.
Pressepost labeling and address labels must
always be suitable for machine sorting. However,
this does not give grounds for automatic
entitlement to the machine sorting of posted
items. Please make note of the following and do
not hesitate to get in touch with us on this
matter.
The following information must be included
on the address labels on POSTVERTRIEBSSTÜCK
(preferred periodicals) and PRESSESENDUNG
(standard periodicals) items: n Sender and recipient address n Name of shipment type (“Postvertriebsstück”
or “PVSt” or “Pressesendung” or “PSdg”) n The words “Entgelt bezahlt” (postage paid) n The words “Deutsche Post AG” n Press product ID (ZKZ)* n Alternatively, the logo can be
printed instead of “Entgelt bezahlt” (postage
paid) or “Deutsche Post AG”
Please see the “Automationsfähige Briefsen-
dungen” (machinable mail items) brochure for
further design rules on the font, character, word,
and line spacing. You will find this as a PDF
document online at deutschepost.de
Alternatively, simply call our customer service
number +49 (0) 61 51 - 9 08 40 83.
Our consultants are available to provide you
with detailed information from Monday through
Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Important:
If the sender’s details are not to be printed on
the label, they must be printed close to the label
on the magazine itself.
PREMIUMADRESS
If you wish to use the PREMIUMADRESS product,
a P and a data matrix code will be added to the
standardized address label. Detailed information
on the design of the label with PREMIUMADRESS
attributes can be found in the “Premiumadress”
brochure and the associated specifications for
Pressepost labels. You can find more information
on this topic online at premiumadress.de
Standardizing the information on the address labels is the safest way to ensure that your press products reach their readers as fast as possible.

Hans SampleSample street 112345 Anytown
* The ZKZ must be specified on the address carrier. Deutsche Post does not require it to be printed on the magazine (e.g., cover page). PREMIUMADRESS label
Positioning of the address labels
If you dispatch your mail item without any
polythene wrapping or envelope, we can offer
you two options: n On the front of a mail item (magazine fold
to the left), the label must be attached at
the bottom upside down. n If the label is attached to the back of a mail
item (magazine fold to the right), it must be
placed in the top section the right way up.
If your press product is dispatched in an envelope,
the sender details and address must appear on
the envelope. For more information on the
address side of items in an envelope, please refer
to the “Automationsfähige Briefsendungen”
(machinable mail items) brochure or contact your
customer adviser.
If you have wrapped your press product in clear
polythene sheet, you can attach the label visibly
under the wrapping. If you use a dedicated sheet
to show the address, please enter all details that
belong to the address on the sheet in such a way
that they are easy to read.
Further information on the design of the address
side is available in the brochure on automatically
processable mail items “Automationsfähige
Briefsendungen”.
Special case: daily newspapers
Due to the special nature of daily newspapers,
the structure and positioning of addresses on the
newspapers presents a particular challenge for
the print shop and for Deutsche Post. To be able
to agree on the best addressing option in each
case, the responsible Deutsche Post customer
adviser must be contacted before the initial
dispatch and any modified production of address
details on daily newspapers.
Do you send out your Pressepost items in an
envelope and wish to use individual franking
marks or standardize the franking marks on your
Pressepost items in line with your DIALOGPOST?
Find out about your options online:
deutschepost.de/frankiervermerk
Multiple copies
If you want to send a reader multiple press
products in one mail item, you need to dispatch
them in one envelope. In this case, the envelope
will show a standardized address label and the
separate note “Nicht öffnen” (Do not open).
The total weight of the mail item must not
exceed 1,000 g.
Replacement items
Replacement items that you post to substitute
for lost or heavily damaged press products must
be placed in envelopes individually. A
standardized address label must be used and the
envelope must be marked clearly with the words
“Ersatzsendung” (replacement item).

Creating bundles with the ZEBU data
10 Bundles and pallets
Up to 10 kilos, stable, and easy to handle: bundles for safe transport
Name
Newspaper bundle (ZEitungsBUnde, ZEBU) data
is a collection of database tables that Deutsche
Post AG provides to its customers for producing
packages of Pressepost shipments in accordance
with the rules and for labeling the relevant
packages
Contents
They always contain all German postal codes*
for delivery, persons collecting items, and bulk
recipients. For each postal code there is a data
record that specifies individual consolidation
rules for the various processing steps for each
postal code.
Variants
There are dedicated ZEBU files for each of the
transport networks (ELN and SLN).
Formats
ASCII and dBASE with different character sets
(normal font and CAPITAL LETTERS, with/without
umlauts)
Validity and update
ZEBU data is updated by Deutsche Post Presse
Distribution twice a year and sent to the
registered data media subscribers via Deutsche
Direkt GmbH free of charge. Only the latest
version for Pressepost shipment preparation is
valid in the relevant period of use. n Used from May 2 in a calendar year n Used from November 1 in a calendar year
Data is usually dispatched to the data medium
recipients approx. 3-4 weeks prior to the
respective launch date.
* All postal codes are in line with the latest version of the data at the time the ZEBU was created; campaign postal codes and postal codes that were launched after the last update and before the impending update are not included.
Deutsche Post Presse Distribution transports press products on behalf of publishing houses and
publishers and delivers them to the subscribers. The collaboration is based on a standardized Deutsche
Post Presse Distribution framework agreement and the General Terms and Conditions as amended.
Due to the press-related nature of the mail items, the Presse Distribution contracting parties are
obligated to address the individual items and consolidate them into packages (bundles and pallets).
Deutsche Post Presse Distribution specifies the rules for consolidating individual items into bundles
and pallets in the newspaper bundle (ZEBU) data on a binding basis.
Transportability
Press products (including inserts) must be suitable
for transportation and must not make processing
at Deutsche Post more difficult – this applies to
shipping in all transport networks. The mail items
must be prepared in such a way that they can be
consolidated into stackable bundles.
Creating bundles from individual copies
Pressepost items are always shipped in bundles
with the relevant bundle label. If at least five
copies exist for a processing step (ZBG, ZSP),
bundles should be created for these processing
steps after addressing; if there are at least
10 copies per processing step, bundles must be
created for this.
Bundle preparation is required in order to ensure
optimized and fast transportation. For ergonomic
reasons, a bundle’s weight must not exceed 10 kg.
It must be able to withstand heavy handling, i.e.,
its stability for postal processing must be ensured.
You can achieve this for example by shrink-
wrapping the bundle or tying it with newspaper
wrappers.
Important: We recommend sorting the materials
in the bundle in ascending or descending order
according to postal code, street, and street
number.
You can find out the detailed criteria used to
group mail items into bundles from page 16
onwards.
Test phase
We have started a field test for machinable mail
items in the second-day-service with the C6/C5
standard letter format.
Requirements for participation: n Minimum amount: 25,000 copies per posting n Posting in routing region trays (no bundles) n Tray labels n Posting only after approval by the responsible
customer adviser

The use of a barcode to control the tray is being prepared. When this is launched, it must be printed on the information carrier. Detailed information on the content will be provided before this comes into effect.
Bundles and pallets 11
12 Bundles and pallets
The database files of the ZEBU contain Germany’s
postal codes for delivery and pick-up. Every postal
code is described in the ZEBU by means of a data
record that consists of 27 data fields
(178 characters). It regulates the mapping of each
individual postal code to Deutsche Post AG’s
higher-level logistics package destinations. It also
contains the valid routing information for the
labeling of bundles and pallets.
Data field (DF) 1 contains the 5-digit postal code
as a reference for the recipient address. Bundle
preparation is based on the information in DF 2
to DF 13. With regard to pallet preparation, all
other data fields are relevant in addition to the
fields valid for bundle preparation. It is also
particularly important to use the correct ZEBU
files for the relevant transport network
(ELN or SLN).

Did you know ?
Postal codes in the recipient addresses, which
are not included in the ZEBU data, should still
be optimized in the Pressepost shipping pro-
cess. These addresses are optimized directly
into a processing step 3 bundle with the bun-
dle destination in accordance with digits 1 + 2
of the postal code.

Bundle preparation
Based on experience, physically transportable
bundles can be prepared for press products if
there are 5 items or more. If there are 10 copies
or more with the same destination, bundle prepa-
ration is mandatory. Due to the internal occupa-
tional health and safety provisions, the maximum
bundle weight must be limited to 10 kg. Within
these quantity and weight provisions, Pressepost
shipping bundles must be optimally prepared by
the customer or its service provider in compliance
with the ZEBU specifications.
With optimum shipping preparation, there are as
many items as possible in direct bundles
(processing steps 1 + 2). Mail items should only be
consolidated in processing step 3 bundles (2-digit
routing region or 5-digit (sorting) routing code) if
there are not enough of them for direct bundling.
Production peaks that do not achieve the
minimum number of mail items in the bundle
may, of course, be set up as a “final bundle”
containing fewer items. Bundle destinations other
than direct bundles of bundle processing steps
1+2 and bundles of bundle processing step 3 are
not permissible.
Production rules for packages
Example of bundle preparation with shrink wrapping
Example of bundle preparation with bundle lashing
Efficient and secure transportation of press products – consolidated into bundles and pallets optimized for logistics
14 Bundles and pallets
The design features of press products (open shipping, printed title page and back page, inserts, etc.)
and the subscriber’s right to the delivery of an up-to-date, undamaged press item can only be
efficiently combined at present by way of the logistically-optimized consolidation of individual items
into bundles and pallets that can be transported unopened as far into the destination area as possible.
Palette preparation
If Pressepost items are bundled into pallets, the
maximum pallet weight of 900 kg including the
pallet’s tare weight applies. The pallets must not
exceed a height of 1.80 m. In order to transport
Pressepost pallets cost-effectively, the minimum
pallet weight has been set at 200 kg of mail
items. With respect to pallet preparation,
individual pallets with a lower fill level may also
be created for production peaks.
Please note that a maximum of 5 frames per
pallet are permissible when using pallet collars.
In this case, the entire pallet must not be higher
than 1.20 m.
As with bundle preparation, processing steps
1 + 2 apply to pallets accordingly. In processing
step 3, the 5-digit (sorting) routing codes are not
used in the pallet preparation process. Pallet
optimization is determined by digits 1 + 2 of the
data in DF 10. Beyond the three processing steps
for bundles, there are additional processing steps
for pallets as regards the creation of depot (or
routing zone) pallets and Germany pallets.

16 Bundle and pallet labels
The product ID “Presse” [Press] and the respective network ID “ELN” (second-day service) or “SNL”
(next-day service and same-day service ) must be specified at the top in the routing information. With
the next-day-service, the network ID is followed by information on the SNL depot ID in accordance with
DF 19 of the ZEBU SLN.
In addition to routing numbers from DF 2 and / or DF 6, all bundles and pallets in processing steps 1 + 2
are labeled with codes from DF 5 and/or DF 9 and the names of the points of receipt (DF 3 and / or DF 7)
with company identification numbers (DF 4 and / or DF 8).

Processing step 3
In processing step 3, bundles are only labeled
with the routing number from DF 10 without
any additional codes. The two-digit routing
region names or the five-digit internal sorting
routing codes (DF 10) are used here. When
preparing pallets (and / or pallet labels), it is not
the full five digits from DF 10 that are used but
only the two-digit routing region names or, in the
case of five-digit content, only digits 1 + 2 of the
value.
Other processing steps for pallets
In addition to processing steps 1- 3 (covering the
preparation of bundles), other processing steps
apply to the consolidation of bundled Pressepost
items on pallets.
Processing step 4
FS 4 (DF 14 to DF 17), which is named in the ZEBU
data record description, is not used at present.
Processing step 5
Referred to as the routing zone pallet in the ELN
network, the routing information of the pallet
label depends on the 1- digit DF 19 value of the
ZEBU ELN. Pallets in the SNL network are known
as depot pallets and labeled with the 2-digit
DF 19 value of the ZEBU SLN.
Data fields 24 to 27
The routing information from DF 24 to DF 27 is
not currently used for the preparation/labeling
of Pressepost packages.
Processing step 6
Mail items in bundles that cannot be cost-
effectively palleted in processing step 5 are
prepared as Germany pallets. Both networks (ELN
and SLN) use “0 - 9” as routing information. This is
not specified in the ZEBU data.
Special feature in the same-day service
Only direct bundles (BFS 1 and and BFS 2) are permitted in the same-day service. When preparing pal-
lets, production steps FS 4, FS 5, and FS 6 may not be applied in the same-day service, as the customer
posts the items at the destination mail center. The “worst” permissible pallet here is an FS 3 or LR pallet.

18 Bundle and pallet labels
The bundle label
Each bundle must be identified with a bundle
label (BAZ) to ensure transportation to the right
destination and correct processing. The format of
the bundle labels should correspond to the for-
mat of the magazine to be dispatched. Minimum
dimensions: DIN A5 (210 mm × 148 mm).
Bundle labels must be produced in light green.
This makes it easier to distinguish press product
packages from shipments with other shipping ser-
vices. The central field of the bundle label con-
tains information on the bundle’s destination. The
following font size requirements must be
observed. Information on the product (“Presse”)
[Press] and transport network (“ELN”/”SLN” &
“Depot-Nr.” [Depot no.]) in line 1 must have
a font size of at least 11 mm. The characters in
the information on the bundle destination and
type (routing code and bundle ID) in line 2 must
be at least 22 mm high. They should always be
twice the size of any other details on the bundle
label. The name of the bundle’s point of receipt
must be specified in a font size of at least 4 mm.
Larger fonts are desirable, however.
The name of the point of receipt may also be
specified below the line with the routing code
and bundle ID (see examples). In this case, the
spacing between the routing code and the bundle
ID ( e. g. , ZBG) should exceed 30 mm. The sender /
poster information, ZKZ, title, and number of mail
items in the bundle must be specified with a font
size of at least 3 mm in the fields at the top of the
bundle label.

20 Bundle and pallet labels
The pallet label
When preparing pallets, it is essential that they are
labeled with corresponding pallet labels (PalLZ).
At least three pallet labels are used for each pallet.
One label should be placed on the front, one on
the side, and one on the top of the pallet.
The pallet label must be on light-green paper of
at least DIN A4 size. The central field of the pallet
label contains information on the pallet’s
destination.
The following font size requirements must be
observed. Information on the shipment product
(“Presse” [Press]) and transport network (“ELN”/ ”SLN”
& “Depot-Nr.” [Depot no.]) in line 1 must have
a font size of at least 11 mm. The characters in
the information on the pallet destination and
type (routing code and pallet ID) in line 2 as well
as the name of the pallet’s point of receipt must
be at least 22 mm high. The name of the point of
receipt may also be specified below the line with
the routing code and pallet ID. The sender address
of the publisher including the street and postal
code can be printed in the top left margin of the
pallet label in any font size.

22 Preparation for dispatch
The ZEBU-Manuell (ZEBU manual) list lets you
create bundles manually if your mail volume is
under 5,000 copies. This optimization by routing
region and thus the exclusive preparation of LR
bundles (BFS 3 for automated use) is only per-
mitted in the second-day service (ELN network).
Here’s how the “manual list” works:
Five-digit postal code areas are listed in columns 1
and 2.
The relevant bundle labeling is assigned in
column 3 (see graphic). Column 4 contains the
network ID.
The copies with a postal code from one postal
code area must be grouped in a bundle. The
description, which is assigned to the relevant
postal code sequence (column 3), appears on the
bundle label. You need to sort the addressed
magazines in a bundle in ascending or descending
postal code order.
The bundles created in this way, which are
assigned to a postal code sequence, can be of
different sizes. If a weight exceeding 10 kg is
reached for one bundle, it must be divided in such
a way that multiple bundles weighing less than
10 kg are created. These must be identified by the
same bundle label.

All prepared? Now the choice is yours
Both for the second-day service and for the next-day service, you can pick up your print run from the production site – and, depending on the volume, this may even be free of charge.
Posting and pick-up 23
Post items yourself – anywhere in Germany
24 Posting and pick-up
Timely notification
If you would like to post your shipment yourself,
it is important to let us have a shipment notifi ca-
tion one week prior to the initial posting of the
title or before you change your post office –
other wise we may be unable to accept your
shipments. Please contact your Deutsche Post
customer adviser, who will be able to provide you
with all the important information, ranging from
addresses and latest posting times to the neces-
sary documentation such as the package schedule.
Remember the latest posting time
Press products must be posted at an agreed post
office by a particular latest posting time.
It is essential that these latest posting times are
adhered to so that the magazine can be delivered
to the reader at the agreed time after posting.
Nationwide, there are roughly 100 of these post
offices in the ELN and 10 depots in the SLN.
Standard for the same-day service
Regional daily newspapers, which are to be
delivered on the day of production, must be
posted at agreed post offices in the destination
area – there are 82 mail centers available
throughout Germany for this.
Please do not forget the shipment notifica-
tion and latest posting times when posting
your items.
This is irrespective of whether you post your
mail items yourself or have them picked up:
Notification of shipments must be provided
two working days (Mon.-Sat.) prior to posting
via the AM portal.
Important note:
Press products (national and international) and
DIALOGPOST items are picked up by us free of
charge provided that the total sum weight of the
various shipment types exceeds 5 metric tonnes.
Shipments must, however, be made available for
pick up on separate pallets as different transit
times apply to press products and DIALOGPOST
items.
Notification of the initial pick-up date
You need to notify your responsible customer
service team two weeks before the initial pick-up
date. Following the initial coordination, any
further pick-up can be conveniently arranged by
fax in the high-speed network (SLN) by 12 midday
and in the Express Logistics Network (ELN) by
10 a.m. before the day of the desired pick-up.
This requires, however, that the shipment volume
does not change by more than 20% and a pick-up
date has been firmly agreed upon. You can obtain
fax forms from your customer service team
responsible. Please do not use your own forms. If
the regular pick-up date changes, you need to
notify the customer service team 14 days before
the changed pick-up date, as otherwise it will not
be possible to guarantee the desired pick-up.
Plan realistic pick-up times
When scheduling the pick-up of your shipments,
please take our binding departure times in the
routing regions into account. A list of the depar-
ture times for the ExpressLogistics Network (ELN)
is available online at pressedistribution.de/down-
loadcenter. You can find out the last departure
times for the high-speed transportation network
(SLN) from your customer adviser.
Please note when changing service provider:
To ensure smooth processing of your press
pro ducts at all times, please notify your customer
ad viser no later than four weeks before you
change service provider.
Pick-up charges*
The pick-up charges are based on the one-way
distance between the pick-up location (e.g., print
shop) and the nearest ELN or SLN posting office.
If newspapers and magazines are printed abroad
and picked up by the ELN, a framework
agreement on the cross-border transportation of
PRESSEPOST items (pick-up) is required. Please
contact your responsible customer service adviser
or the Presse Distribution information line
(see page 29).
Pick-up cancellation
When a pick-up is canceled for reasons attribut-
able to the contracting party, the pick-up charge
for the one-way distance between the depot and
the agreed pick-up location will be levied as a
lump-sum expense. Please ensure that a respons-
ible contact is available at the time of shipping.
Demurrage charges*
Demurrage charges are incurred if there are
delays in the agreed pick-up times. Waiting times
for the pick-up of less than 5 metric tonnes will
be charged after 60 minutes, and for pick-up
quantities exceeding 5 metric tonnes after
120 minutes.
Short notice network changes from ELN to SLN
Network changes to the SLN must be announced
at least two working days (Mon. – Sat.) before the
planned pick-up date. Otherwise, an additional
charge will be made according to the applicable
Presse Distribution price list. In addition to the
transport change, the preparation for dispatch
must be adjusted for posting in the SLN. If this is
not the case, another additional charge will be
made according to the current price list.
Pick-up – the convenient alternative
* You can find all the pick-up rates (within and outside Germany) and demurrage charges on page 41 of the “Presse Distribution: be a hit with your readers” brochure.

This is how we make sure you are billed correctly
To ensure that the transportation and delivery
service can be billed correctly, the following
information must be provided to Deutsche Post’s
billing office for each individual delivery of a title: n Shipment notification two (2) working days
(Mon.-Sat.) prior to posting n Correct issue-related information such as
individual weight, posting quantity, variant
and posting date n Transport network used n Chargeable inserts or objects enclosed with
the title n Information on the destinations to which
bundles are to be delivered, the number of
bundles, and the number of magazines these
bundles contain n One sample copy of each title which matches
the shipped copies
You can send this information to Deutsche Post
either by mail in the form of lists or via the
electronic AM.portal or AM.exchange method.
The manual method – by mail
If you prefer sending the information by mail,
we require a completed posting list, a dispatch
list and a sample copy of the title* from you.
Please send the completed forms and the sample
copy to Deutsche Post’s billing office when you
dispatch the magazines.
Deutsche Post AG
Auftragserfassung Pressepost
22282 Hamburg
Please make sure you ship the sample copy as
a POSTVERTRIEBSSTÜCK item or PRESSESENDUNG
item. The address of the billing office should be
included in the contracting party’s pool of
subscribers/buyers. This also applies to the
shipment of sample copies when using one
of the electronic methods.
The electronic methods –
AM.portal and AM.exchange
Using the AM.portal saves creating a posting list,
as this information is communicated to Deutsche
Post electronically. However, this method still
requires you to send a dispatch schedule and
a sample copy to the billing office in Hamburg
at the time you are dispatching the magazines.
With AM.exchange we offer the electronic
method for professionals. With this method, all
necessary information is communicated
electronically. You only need to send the sample
copy to the billing office in Hamburg at the time
you are dispatching the magazines.
The MANAGER PRESSE DISTRIBUTION software
makes it very easy for you to optimize your
posting details in the data exchange format and
transfer data to AM.exchange. This application
also enables you to directly navigate to the
AM.portal.**

Posting list and dispatch list
If you want to notify us of your posting by mail,
we require you to provide a completed posting list
and a dispatch schedule.
We are happy to process the lists you have sent in.
We recommend that you use the electronic
AM.portal or AM.exchange, because you do not
need to create the posting list with these
methods, nor do you need to supply a dispatch
list (when using AM.exchange).
Furthermore, if you use the electronic method,
your basic charge will be reduced. More
information can be found in the “Presse
Distribution” price list.
If you have any questions on lists and billing numbers, please contact your customer service team at
Deutsche Post. The posting list is available for download from pressedistribution.de as a .pdf
document. For press products which are published more frequently than once a week it is sufficient
to submit one dispatch list per week per transport network (SLN and ELN), unless the number and
weight of the copies you dispatch vary considerably on individual days.
