Colour trends in 2017
In fashion, just as in interior design, we encounter familiar, updated and innovative trends time and again. Great significance is attached to the use of colour as this enables designers to create an atmosphere and set different scenes. As part of the design process, various nuances and arrangements can be used to catch the eye in exciting and unique ways. Soothing colours like pastels and natural tones are set to remain popular for 2017, and run right through the area of interior furnishings as a kind of leitmotif. Vibrant tones from the blue/green family and the mauve spectrum provide some variety in the colour palette.
Monochrome
“Monochrome furnishings,” explains Andrea Steinegger of the Austrian Furniture Industry, “are based on tone-in-tone design”. The term originally comes from Greek and means ‘one colour’ – ‘mono-chromos’. However, when used in interior design, monochrome increasingly refers to a reduced appearance of colour. Timeless classics include neutral colours and non-colours found in the lighter range of the colour spectrum, such as beige or cream right through to white. At the other end of the scale, black also forms part of the monochrome trend. Some colour configurations have a particularly natural and warm appearance; they complement each other and invite you to relax. Others produce contrasts. The interplay between different surfaces, patterns and materials also adds an exciting edge to furnishings that is far from mundane.
Grey
Grey was long considered a dreary and boring colour. However, we no longer need think of a ‘grey day’ as something negative. These days it would be hard to imagine furnishings without grey tones. The different colour nuances and temperatures are particularly fascinating and can be used to create a truly individual look. Warm medium grey or cool light grey – different shades can be combined harmoniously with one another. Silver accents lend a room a modern, vibrant feel and are particularly desirable for 2017.

Sand tones
Sand tones also remain amongst the most popular natural colours. Their unobtrusive effect coupled with great potential to be combined with other colours make them a classic across a range of furnishing styles. These shades produce a warm, cosy atmosphere. Whether used with complementary tones from their own colour family or combined with more eccentric flecks of colour, sand tones are extremely versatile. Gold is top choice as an accentuating partner colour and for that shimmering touch.

Black and white
The strongest pairing in the monochrome style has to be black and white. Whether used on their own or together, they provide an elegant and puristic backdrop to the home. This doesn’t necessarily mean cool and clinical – a mixture of natural wood, patterns or structured textiles will break up the ensemble nicely.

Mauve
Mauve is becoming increasingly popular. This mixture of pink, violet and grey can sometimes appear more vibrant, sometimes more pallid and, as such, can be used in a wide range of settings. Whether used as a wall colour or decorative element or integrated into the furniture itself, mauve achieves a striking yet discreet effect for a refined, romantic look.

Blue and green Those wanting to add a colourful accent to their furnishings can choose between rich contrasts or delicate framing. From pastel colours to muted tones, anything goes. One example is the fresh, yellow-green tone Greenery, Pantone Colour of the Year 2017, which picks up on the ongoing trend for sustainability and is evocative of young, green leaves. Those who prefer a more lush colour can opt for Kale, a deep forest green. The denim blue Niagara on the other hand takes you to the seashore and makes you reminisce of times past. Anything is possible; this colour palette spans a wide range of blue and green tones, any one of which is ideal for lending your room a monochrome look.
