Should this situation be suspected or experienced during the progress of works, application of the product should cease immediately and instructions from the Contract Administrator obtained before continuing.

The following information should be read in conjunction with the Specification. Before work commences, the appropriate Product Data Sheets and Material Safety Data Sheets should be obtained. Always refer to the instructions on the back of pack.

GENERAL INFORMATION RELATING TO THE APPLICATION OF COATINGS

Surface Preparation Failure to provide an adequately prepared surface will result in poor adhesion and performance of the subsequently applied coating system. All loose or failing material should be removed and powdery surfaces should be stabilised.Timber surfaces should not be over prepared with fine abrasives, as this will reduce the degree of absorption. Wire wool and metallic brushes must not be used. Personal Protection Treatments for the removal of some coatings, such as sanding, burning off or chemical stripping) may generate hazardous dust and/or fumes. Work in well ventilated areas. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (respiratory, eye and skin). Adhere to Manufacturers’ advice at all times.

Removal/Preparation of Lead Paint Special precautions should be taken during the surface preparation of pre-1960’s paint surfaces, as they may contain harmful lead. A guide for removing old lead paint safely is available from the British Coatings Federation on 01327 360660 or www.coatings.org.uk. Fillers and Stoppers Be sure to use products which have been specifically designed for use with the substrate being treated. Translucent finishes are not designed to obscure the substrate, therefore filling and stopping should be avoided wherever possible and should be done with great care. General or all purpose fillers are not suitable particularly on exterior joinery where even wood fillers often cannot cope with timber movement and may work loose. Condensation Internal condensation is a major reason for failure of glazing and coatings systems, mould and algal growth to internal glazing lines being a major indicator of problems. No coating system can be expected to cope well in these conditions. Consideration should be given to a survey of the building’s ventilation, in addition to using modern glazing sealants sealants (not silicone, as paint systems will draw back from these), rather than traditional putties, and a vented bottom beading system. Weather Conditions Do not apply coatings when air or substrate temperatures are likely fall below 8°C or when the relative humidity is above 80% during the application or drying periods. For specific information refer to the back of the pack or the Product Data Sheet. Storage of Materials Store products upright and secure. Protect from extremes of temperatures. Ensure products are stored in a dry place where the temperature does not drop below 5°C or rise above 30°C. Colour Consistency Always intermix packs for colour consistency. Check the accuracy prior to application. Crown Paints is not liable for decorating costs caused as a result of an incorrect colour being applied. Application When applying coatings, in order to ensure optimum protection and durability, it is essential to achieve the required coverage rate, particularly when using medium and high build finishes. If there is any doubt, the film build should be checked using a wet film thickness gauge. Particular attention should be paid to ensure end grains are thoroughly treated to saturation by applying the first coat “wet on wet” until no more product is absorbed. All coatings should be laid off in the direction of the grain, with the minimum number of brush strokes required to give an even finish. Equipment Always ensure the correct application tools are used. Water based products should be applied using synthetic brushes. For specific details, refer to the back of the pack or the Product Data Sheet.

FFG 7 – New, unpainted woodwork Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat x 1 coat + Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss x 2 SURFACE PREPARATION Exterior Doors Ensure the tops and bottoms of all exterior doors are fully coated to reduce water ingress. Factory primed or base stained smooth planed joinery All surfaces must be sound, clean and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of materials to be applied. Prior to painting, the moisture content should not exceed 18%. Denib using a fine grade Scotch Brite Pad (grey) or a fine grade abrasive paper. Do not polish or break surface of the base coating. Remove all dust. Note: Localised damage, or deterioration of factory applied base coatings due to exposure, must be recoated with the primer specified for the chosen paint system. Allow to dry. Bare smooth planed timber in sound condition All surfaces must be sound, clean and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion of the materials to be applied. Any fixings must be non-ferrous. Prior to painting, the moisture content should not exceed 18%. Rub down with a fine grade abrasive paper. Remove all dust. Sharp edges Round all sharp edges to a 1-3mm radius. Remove all dust. Timbers with natural oils, wood extractives or chemicals Scrub and swab Oak, Teak, Iroko, Afrormosia, Idigbo, Cedar, etc with clean methylated spirit frequently changing the face of cloths. Allow solvent to completely evaporate before overcoating. Knots/resinous areas Remove excess resin from knots and other resinous areas by the use of a hot air paint stripper. Wipe immediately with methylated spirit to remove residue. Apply two thin coats of fresh knotting to all exposed knots. Allow to dry. Note: If knots are removed fill with a two pack proprietary filler. Preservative treatment To any non-preservative treated bare timber deemed to be Durability Class 4 (slightly durable) or Class 5 (not durable) reference BS EN350-2:1994, brush apply two coats of Sadolin Wood Preserver to saturation, to all exposed surfaces and end grain in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Allow adequate time to dry between coats and before overcoating. Bead glazing systems Priming - Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat Remove all defective beads and sealants. Prime the glazing rebates, backs of replacement/removed beads and end grain with one full coat of Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Dry Primer Undercoat. Allow a minimum drying time of 4 hours in normal drying conditions. For optimum performance a dry glazing system (fixed with non-ferrous fixings, capped with sealant after painting) is preferred, to accommodate the movement of timber and maintain an effective seal; all as recommended in BS 8000:Part 7:1990 Code of practice for glazing. To confirm compatibility, please consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material. Note: Make good all defective glazing to prevent water ingress. Non-setting compounds or linseed oil putty may be used with paint systems but reduced performance can be expected. Silicone digester To all areas showing signs of silicone contamination apply one or two treatments of a silicone digester, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
