Efforts to prevent the risk of SSIs require knowledge of the mechanisc factors responsible for the eology of these severe HAIs. Therefore, development of successful paent-centric pathways to improve surgical outcomes requires matching comorbid risk with effecve evidence-based intervenonal strategies. The 2019 SSI Prevenon Summit will focus on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of device-related and specialty-specific infecons. In addion, our expert panel will discuss the role of selected evidence-based intervenonal pracces that effecvely reduce the risk of infecon in specific surgical paent populaons. Anbioc stewardship has become a major focus of quality improvement within the hospitalized paent populaon. The precise role of the surgical praconer in the anbioc stewardship process will be explored with an emphasis on appropriate anmicrobial prophylaxis and anmicrobial management in the general surgical populaon.

Surgical site infections (SSI) are associated with significant patient morbidity and mortality. Efforts to prevent the risk of SSIs require knowledge of the mechanistic factors responsible for the etiology of these severe HAIs. Therefore, development of successful patient-centric pathways to improve surgical outcomes requires matching comorbid risk with effective evidence-based interventional strategies. The 2019 SSI Prevention Summit will focus on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of device-related and specialty-specific infections. In addition, our expert panel will discuss the role of selected evidence-based interventional practices that effectively reduce the risk of infection in specific surgical patient populations. Antibiotic stewardship has become a major focus of quality improvement within the hospitalized patient population. The precise role of the surgical practitioner in the antibiotic stewardship process will be explored with an emphasis on appropriate antimicrobial prophylaxis and antimicrobial management in the general surgical population.
