Ryan Meeboer
This lyrical piece is composed using ternary (ABA) form and gives every part an opportunity to shine. Filledwith rich use of harmony and a flowing melody, As the River Flows is a great way to teach an ensemble theexpressive style.
After the introduction sets up the mood of the piece, the first melody is brought in by the first part, supportedby parts two and three. Part three introduces the second melody at measure 21. Part one adds some motionat measure 30, as the piece builds up to the contrasting return of the A melody and measure 37. Be sure thatthere is a sudden drop in dynamics at this time.
The piece then builds up again at measure 45, to close with a beautiful melody in part one, backed up by adrone. Be sure this melody is easily heard and is not covered up here.
