MARCH 2016 Issue #280 Prez Sez Congratulations to all the hardy souls who survived the one day snow storm of nearly 50 cm on Tuesday, the 16 th . Glad to say most of us were mobile the next day thanks to the efforts of the staff who had to work through more equipment problems and put in long hours. With regards to snow clearing, Frontier staff has asked that residents do not push snow into the roadways and ask that you convey this message to your contractors if you use one. House check schedules have been slowed due to the heavy drifting snow during the last big storm making it difficult to get to front entrances through un-cleared driveways and porches. I attended the County Planning Committee meeting in February and spoke in support of the By-Law variance request by Sandbank Homes to increase front yard setback to 7.65 metres and increase lot usage to 45% on three lots containing 3 villa homes each in Phase III; the request passed. This meets the issues we previously had with short driveways. I would like to thank Kevin Hanbury who has stepped up to coordinate the participation of Wellington on the Lake residents for this year’s Relay for Life Cancer Walk on Friday, June 10 th in Picton. We will revive a tent presence and encourage potential walkers to contact Kevin to get registered. I have been contacted by a representative for the Ontario Senior Games about encouraging our residents who may be interested in participating in this year’s summer events. There is a long list of activities which may interest some of you, so I urge you to come to the April General meeting to hear all about it. Just a reminder that there is no General Meeting in March. Prez SezCongratulations to all the hardy souls who survived the one day snow storm of nearly 50 cm on Tuesday, the 16th.

I would like to thank Kevin Hanbury who has stepped up to coordinate the participation of Wellington on the Lake residents for this year’s Relay for Life Cancer Walk on Friday, June 10th in Picton.

The next General Meeting is Tuesday, April 12th, at 7 p.m. at the Rec Centre.

Board Sez ‘Surprize, Surprize’, we had quorum at the February General Meeting (61 plus a couple of proxies). Thanks to all for taking the time to turn out! This allowed us to vote on accepting financial reports and minutes for the last couple of months. While there were no new residents present, it was announced that Eric Grimshaw has been appointed as a special advisor to help the Board with a number of issues that need specialized knowledge and experience.

Additionally, as the Board is on the verge of tackling revisions to the Policy Manual, (i.e. everything that was taken out of the revised By-laws plus pre-existing policies), Christine Searle, who has a background in this work has graciously offered to help in its’ revision, which is much appreciated. Although Tyler has moved on to another job at his own request, house checks for those away or going away continue to be done by Frontier around other tasks. Despite the recent heavy snow, plowing has generally been without problems and Mark Leigh is proving to be a concerned manager who phones Bryan each weekend to get an update on the conditions here in order to determine if clearing or sanding is needed. The Board is in touch with Daimler and is trying to get together documents and agreements that make sense and explain the common fee issues. The intent is to face Daimler within the next two months to try and solidify their stance on the issues raised. We remain willing to seek legal help to resolve these concerns if required. On February 17th, Sandbank Homes presented a request to the County for a By-law change to three lots of Villas in Phase III. This change involves increases to front setbacks fought for before, a decrease to rear setback and the overall size of these specific villas has been increased to 42% lot coverage as this is apparently what new buyers in the 55-60 age bracket are seeking. The Ontario Senior Games District 10 will be attending our April General Meeting to try and recruit any interested participants for the Ontario Summer Games in August in Midland. They have activities like Carpet Bowling, Cribbage, Tennis, Euchre, Slow Pitch, Cycling, Walking, Bocce Ball etc. Anyone wishing to see the comprehensive list should contact Bryan. For those who may not know, there’s a new treadmill in the Fitness Room purchased by the Fitness Club. It is a commercial grade unit and should outlast us all. Well Done Fitness Club! Of note, Sandbank Homes has been approached for a financial contribution for this piece of equipment since it adds to the facilities they advertise. From a financial perspective, revenues in January totaled $321.33 (newsletter advertising, coffee & donuts and 50/50 Draw). Expenses for the same period totaled $590.92 (condolences and printing). Monies held in trust increased by $110 from the Snooker Club. For those who may be wondering where the chairs with arms have gone, rest assured they are still available and are stored in the Card Room. Your WOLRA Board

WOLRA Board Needs Your Help Your Board is looking for old information, which you may have in your files. Unfortunately WOLRA has never had the luxury of a permanent secretary and although Daphne Fraser has done a great job in going through old files and tabulating them, there are many holes in our data.

Therefore the Board is asking for your help in completing our records and in particular we are looking for all financial documents originating from Daimler, Frontier or Sandbanks, which refer to common fees and give yearly increases or stated rates for the following year, but NOT your house agreements which are private and confidential. We are also looking for any old budgets, expenditure or reserve fund references in documents from Daimler or Frontier. We look for your help in this regard and if possible, drop the item(s) off to Ron Thomson at 18 Heritage Drive or Bryan West at 9 Claramount Court, so they may be photocopied and returned to you. Many thanks. Your WOLRA BOARD

It’s Back for 2016! Yes, The Wellington Classic returns to the Wellington on the Lake Golf Course on Thursday, July 7th. Scramble format will be played at 1:30 p.m. followed by a new dinner menu with wine. Don't forget the live and silent auction to benefit children with mental health problems so they may attend activities and camps their parents otherwise could not afford. Registration begins April 1st. We can make up teams if

you do not have a foursome. Stay tuned for more updates. Kate Brookfield, x9060

Spring Forward! Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 13th. Might be a good time to change your fire alarm and smoke detector batteries too. Be safe!

Confusion re New TV…Or Not I would like to clear up any confusion about the appearance and disappearance of a new television last month. Last summer, the Board was asked to look into purchasing a new TV as the existing one is 10 years old and has developed ghosts. After consulting with Nick Kohut and Bruce Cordick,

our technical team, as well as The Geek Squad from Best Buy, we purchased a 65" Vizio on a 30 day approval. Unfortunately, the picture quality wasn't nearly as good as the one in the store and we learned that a new Cogeco HD receiver and an HDMI compatible amplifier/receiver would be needed in order to give us a good picture. We had not budgeted for these extra components and, therefore, decided to return the television at this time. Instead, we purchased the above mentioned components and attached them to the new projector that Eric Grimshaw generously donated and we were successful in producing a clear television picture on the big screen at the front of the hall (the new Cogeco HD receiver has since been hooked up to the old TV and it has made a big difference in the quality of the picture). Several residents enjoyed watching the Super Bowl on the big screen and said that the picture quality was excellent. We will look into a new television again soon and will come to th e membership for approval. Obviously, not everyone is in favour of purchasing a new television but, one of the Board's goals is to enhance the quality of life and enjoyment of our members. To this end, we have helped, in the last year or so, to purchase chairs for around the pool, new outdoor games such as horseshoes and Bocce Ball, a new cover for the snooker table, new wind screens for the tennis court, and new sun shelter for the shuffleboard courts to name a few. Not everyone uses any or all of these amenities, but we are trying to reach out to as many residents as possible. With the addition of a Wii Game, which is being generously donated by Doug and Brenda Little, there will be several new opportunities for physical activities such as virtual golf, bowling, darts, tennis, as well as fitness and exercise programs that can be used with an updated television. We do a lot of fundraising, especially with the Garage Sale, and have the money to improve our community. Nancy Barton

Dragon Boat Festival 2016

Summer and Dragon Boating are just around the corner. Soon the ice will be gone from West Lake and the paddlers will be striking out across the lake. Once again we are planning to put a WOLRA team together for the Wellington Dragon Boat Festival in early August. Last year we narrowly lost to our rivals from the Legion so this year we would like to get in a bit more training before the event.

If you are interested in being on the team and attending the practice sessions then watch out for a sign-up sheet in the Library in May and information at PAID day. It is lots of fun and an exhilarating workout. Sheila Hanbury, x1213

Card Elimination Game

Saturday, January 30th (the last Saturday of the month) we all enjoyed playing the Card Elimination Game and the lucky person who won the TOONIE" game was Dianne Muise. Because 4 0 residents showed up, she won $80! We also had 10 winners, each winning $10. Not bad at all for a $4.50

investment. So if you would like to be any of those winners, simply come and enjoy a relaxing evening in the Main Hall at the Rec Centre, meet up with new friends and above all have fun. The more who show up the bigger the final “Jack Pot”. Thanks to ALL Y'ALL for showing up. We play every Saturday evening between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. until the end of April. The cost is only $3.50, except for the last Saturday of each month (TOONIE NIGHT) when the cost is $4.50. Rene & Donna St. James, Co-Ordinators, x3050

Woodcrafters’ Annual Barbecue FRIDAY MAY 13th, all Wellington on the Lake residents, old and new (I don't mean age), please mark your calendar for the famous and enjoyable Annual Woodcrafters BBQ at noon at the Rec Centre. donated to the Picton Hospital Foundation for necessary equipment. All 50/50 Draw receipts will go to the Children’s Stocking Fund. We will be offering a tasty BBQ lunch with chicken burgers, salads and beverages. We hope you can join us as this is always an enjoyable time; a great way to meet your neighbours and establish new friends. Bryan West x2412 or David Searle x1612

Garage and Bake Sale WOLRA's biggest fundraiser of the year, the annual Garage and Bake Sale, will take place on Saturday, May 7th, from 8 a.m. until noon. Last year, we raised over $5600, thanks to the generous donations from so many members of our community and to the hard working and

dedicated volunteers who made this such a success. The money raised was used to purchase, or help towards the purchase of, the pool table cover, the tennis court wind screens, the shuffleboard sun screens, the horseshoe, croquet, and Bocce Ball games, the new Cogeco HD receiver, and the new receiver amplifier, to name a few, that support WOLRA activities and enhance our community. We need your help. We will be looking for anything that is in good condition; everything from small appliances to jewellery, golf clubs to clothing, dishes to Christmas decorations, and puzzles to knick-knacks. Please keep us in mind if you are spring cleaning or know of anyone who is moving and might have items to donate. I will be contacting many of last year's volunteers and will schedule a meeting in late April for everyone who is interested in participating in this year's event. The date will be announced in the April newsletter. As a little perk, volunteers are allowed to purchase two items from the sale in advance which has always been a very popular feature. If you are new to our neighbourhood, getting involved is a wonderful way to meet new people. Thank you, Nancy Barton

Super Bowl Party Follow-Up The Super Bowl Party was attended by 37 people and all of us had a good time. The pot-luck dinner was a smash as the food was delicious and there were so many dishes to choose from. There were small door prizes given out during halftime and games were played to the amusement of most of us. Ron Thomson was the big winner in the football

pool. Wayne Craig won the football toss game. I would like to thank Garry and Shirley Evans for all their help and also all the ladies that helped with the food. We finally figured out how to get the game on the projector and many people enjoyed the good picture that we were able to project onto the screen. Thanks go out to Bruce Cordick and Nancy Barton for all their help in getting the necessary equipment to be able to enjoy the game on the big screen. We hope to see you again next year for Super Bowl LI (51). Dave Silver

From the Editor - Happy Easter Everyone! Weather here in our part of Florida has vastly improved so we are fans once more...especially since a neighbour sent us pictures of the snow in our yard and driveway back home (yikes!). Gulfport is a gem of a mostly undiscovered destination; lots to do, friendly people and you can walk to everything. I would come back in a heartbeat. Alan and I both still do miss our home, friends and activities though.

If you have given your email address to E.com’s Gerry Ippersiel at [email protected] you will receive the “Neighbourly News and Calendar” by email. These are also on the WOLRA website, in COLOUR @ www.wotl.ca. We had the pleasure of lunching with Gerry and Martha Ippersiel at a beachside restaurant on Anna Maria Island in Florida recently. They are great people; it was fun, food was good and the surroundings beautiful. The Way We Were – Part 2 Franz and Judy Piene celebrating 25 years at WOTL in 2016

In the continuation of our interview with Franz and Judy Piene we explore the origins of the culture that we all enjoy in WOTL today. For us, as new arrivals we were struck by two things, firstly the number of activities available, all headed up by resident volunteers. Secondly and most unexpectedly, were the sheer numbers of complete strangers who approached us, introduced themselves and welcomed us to the neighbourhood. It was obvious something rather special got its start early on and has been supported and reinforced by WOTL residents over the years.

NN: In those early days the Rec Centre was under construction, the tennis courts and pool were not yet complete, and you were all strangers starting a

community from scratch. What did community life look like then?

Judy: We had all come from away, typically Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. We all felt like pioneers and worked together to make it our new home. Everyone took part in functions. We took trips together, went to the theatre, had dinners out and held our meetings and pot-luck dinners in our homes before we had a completed Rec Centre. We had some great themed dinners, not catered I might add, such as Italian, Hawaiian and Oktoberfest. We also put on some wonderful productions which showcased a real range of talent in the community. These were often written up in the Wellington Times and Picton Gazette. I believe Roy Goostrey has many of these recorded on tape.

NN: Were there any other events or occasions that stand out in your memory?

Judy: The first Christmas parade, we walked from the Fire Hall to the Legion and it was bitterly cold. Our first Halloween, held at the Town Hall, we ran out of treats and Franz and George Priestman rushed to the convenience store in the snow and ice to get more sweets. I have many fond memories of Flamingo Races, Coffee Mornings and our pot-luck dinners.

NN: What about the activities, like Cards, Bingo, Quilting, etc.?

Judy: Many of us went South for the winters and we had the benefit of staying in similar communities that were well established in Florida, Texas and Arizona. We picked up ideas from these communities and brought them back with us. So Bingo, Bridge, other card games, and indoor Shuffleboard all got started very early on. In those very early days, everyone was involved in this community in some fashion or another. As the community grew, not everyone was involved but there were always people who stepped up and kept the traditions alive.

NN: If I might be so bold as to speak for us newcomers; thank you to you, Judy and Franz, and to all of the pioneers and to those who followed, in creating and sustaining the wonderful culture that we have here in Wellington on the Lake.
