To get in the mood for this summer’s Olympics, we’re embracing the sporting life in this issue of Rob Peetoom Magazine, with athletically inspired styles and scenes. Our brides take to the boxing ring, singer Hind gets a rope workout, we go shopping in - where else? - London, and we show you how to keep your hair looking great even while breaking a sweat at the gym. Paris Hilton attended the opening of Rob Peetoom’s latest salon in Bali, the ultra-high-end Hair Spa, where he also shot the latest make-up collections for summer 2012. These are just some of the many features included in our Sporty Summer Issue. Oh, and my hair looks best after I’ve had it blown out at the salon, with the big round brush. It’s a little gift I like to give myself - I get lots of curls and shine, and it looks great all week!

‘My essential summer items: sundresses and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. And when it gets very hot out, I like to use vitamin and mineral

spray on my face. It’s wonderfully refreshing and better than regular facial spray, which is really drying on the skin.’ What do sports and exercise mean to me? I love them! It’s an opportunity to clear my head, and I like feeling my

muscles after a workout. :)’ ‘My hair looks good... the day after I’ve been to the salon for a treatment and blowout. That’s when my natural curls start to show, but a little more polished and less frizzy.’ Beauty tip: ‘You should use an SPF moisturiser every morning from the spring to November each year -

that way, your skin is protected when you unexpectedly find yourself sitting outside in a street café. Once you’re out in the sun it’s already too late, since

you can get sunburn after just 20 minutes.’

‘My essential summer items: SPF 30 sunscreen, self-tanner, bronzing powder and a UV protection shampoo.’ My favourite form of exercise is walking my female Saint Bernard, always at her pace…’ ‘My hair looks good when… it’s not too neat, the roots are just starting to show, and I’ve had the good sense to let the stylist trim my fringe instead of doing it myself.’ Beauty tip: ‘Try using dry shampoo as a styling powder by working it through the ends of your hair - you’ll find it adds lots of volume.’

Karen van EdeBeauty Editor(and Beauty Editorof Vogue nl)

‘My essential summer items: loafers, denim cut-offs and oversized bags. My favourite forms of exercise: running and swimming.’ My

favourite trends for the season are… digital prints, like the T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts from Birds of Paradise, Givenchy’s Spring/Summer

Collection 2012. They look great with a simple pair of Cheap Monday jeans. Now’s the time to try out these styles, so be creative!’ Beauty tip:

‘Have a cup of green tea for breakfast every morning.’

PERSONAL STYLE

Exclusive interview by our special reporter, ROCHELLE PEETOOM

‘Dress to impress’ Paris HiltonWhen Paris Hilton, who describes her personal style as ‘young,

elegant, fresh and sexy’, attended the recent grand opening of Rob Peetoom’s Hair Spa in Bali, Rob himself captured that style

with his camera. Rob’s daughter Rochelle caught up with Paris, asking about her style icons, beauty secrets, favourite look on a

man, and her favourite accessories. (continued on page 12)

HHOW DO YOU LIKE BALI? THIS IS YOUR FIRST VISIT, ISN’T IT?‘Yes, this is my first time here. I love it! Bali is a beautiful island, with a rich culture and lovely people. The rice paddies look so peaceful, and I loved feeding the monkeys at the Pura Uluwata (one of the main holy temples on the island – Ed.).’

DID YOU ENJOY THE OPENING PARTY OF ROB PEETOOM’S HAIR SPA? ‘Yes, it was a great party! Cheyenne and I (Cheyenne is Rob Peetoom’s niece and a close friend of Paris’s - Ed.) had a lot of fun. I’m glad he invited me - I’ve known him for a long time; he’s a very nice and very talented man.

YOU LOOKED GORGEOUS AT THE PARTY. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO ALWAYS LOOK SO GOOD?‘My mom taught me to take care of my skin, so I drink lots of water, stay out of the sun, use moisture-retention skin creams, and get regular facials at the spa. Also, I always dress for the occasion. My motto is simple: dress to impress. You need to always look your best – life’s too short to make compromises.’

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? ‘Fashion changes all the time and my style is just as varied, but always with a touch of Paris. I adore pink and can style myself as Barbie or a businesswoman, or very casual, but the look isn’t complete without a little bling. I would describe my style as young, fresh, elegant and sexy.’

AT WHAT AGE DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN FASHION? ‘I used to be a bit of a tomboy, but when I was 15, I started modelling in New York. I attended all the major fashion shows and soon became very fashion-conscious.’

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR YOUR OWN DESIGNS?(Paris designs shoes, bags, sportswear, jeans, dresses, coats and tops for a variety of brands and under her own name. The items are sold at her own stores in the UK, US, Japan, Dubai, India and the Philippines). ‘The world around me is a constant source of inspiration for me. I travel all over the world and absorb all the colours, patterns and designs I see everywhere. I also attend fashion shows in Paris, New York and Milan to stay up to date on trends. And I think it’s important to know what my fans like, because they’re the ones I design for.’

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS? ‘Dolce & Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel and Farah Kahn.’

DO YOU MIX DESIGNER CLOTHES WITH HIGH-STREET FASHION BRANDS LIKE H&M, ZARA AND TOPSHOP? ‘It doesn’t matter who designed something or how much it costs – it’s about what it looks like. Is it fun? Is it sophisticated? That’s what really matters. So, yes, I do mix clothes from all price ranges, all designers and from all over the world. It’s all about how you wear it.’

DO YOU PAY JUST AS MUCH ATTENTION TO YOUR LINGERIES AND PYJAMAS? ‘Yes, absolutely. I love sexy lingerie and like to wear the designs from my own Honey Bunch collection. (Honey Bunch is Paris’s Tokyo-based concept store, featuring an ultra-feminine, girlish collection of soft, supple, figure-hugging fabrics, many of which are floral patterned.) I also love wearing velour tracksuits - they’re so comfortable!’

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ACCESSORIES?‘Headbands, diamonds, large rings, and bags from my own Paris Hilton collection.’ (There are Paris Hilton Handbag & Accessories stores in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Taipei and Kuwait City - Ed.)

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LOOK FOR MEN? ‘I don’t think guys should try too hard. I like a man in a suit, James Bond-style, but I also like to see a guy dress in a pair of jeans and a crisp white T-shirt. I’m really turned off by guys who try very hard to look good, and I also hate diamonds on a man. I like confident men who look good in fresh, simple clothes.’

BIKINI OR BATHING SUIT?‘Bikini, no contest! I have lots of them, they’re all super cute and come in all colours of the rainbow.’

DO YOU WEAR EARRINGS OR A NECKLACE, OR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME?‘I like to wear everything at the same time! I believe in the more, the better. Obviously, it depends on what I’m wearing, but I love jewellery, so I wear as much of it as I can.’

FINAL QUESTION: WHAT ARE THE KEY ITEMS IN YOUR WARDROBE?‘High heels, party dresses, cute hats and fishnet stockings.’

Rob Peetoom opened his first salon in 1969 and now owns thirteen salons in the Netherlands and a Hair Spa in Bali. His name is not only synonymous with beautiful hair, but also stands for stylish make-up and superior beauty treatments.

All his salons work according to the same philosophy: a beautiful exterior is attainable by everyone, but looks different for each individual. True beauty lies within, and a good stylist knows how to bring the best out in every client. Hair is done well when it suits the individual image and personality of a woman - or a man, of course. And make-up is good when it emphasises strengths and makes weaknesses fade into the background. The best result of beauty treatments is a fresh, glowing skin.

About Rob Peetoom

ApproachThe greatest moment is when people see someone who just stepped out of a Rob Peetoom salon and say: Wow, you look good!

Every treatment in a Rob Peetoom salon starts with looking and listening. Only then can the stylist create a style and choose a colour that suits a particular client the most. Or apply the make-up or beauty treatment that brings out the client’s own beauty most effectively. That’s why people go to Rob Peetoom: because every woman and man wants to bring out the best in themselves.

World Master AwardBesides the World Master Award, he is also a two-time winner of the Global Salon Business Award and many other international awards. He has also been a jury panellist many times and was artistic director at Intercoiffure Mondial. His Creative Team arranges hair for fashion shows and photo shoots. In 2009, he also received a royal badge of honour and was dubbed a knight in the order of Oranje-Nassau.

Image and personalityRob knows his own strengths. “I can cut hair well,” he says, “but there are other hairdressers who can do that too. What not everyone can do is see quickly how to cut a woman’s or man’s hair in such a way that it fits with his or her image and personality. I’m good at that, and my partners in all the salons are too. All the stylists are trained in that skill at the Rob Peetoom Academy.”

HealthyHairHAIR

Your stylist gives you the cut that suits you best, but from there it’s

up to you. For shiny, luscious locks, be sure to eat right and get regular

exercise. Summer’s almost here, so now’s the time to start!

For healthy, bouncy hair, you need to get active! Just like your body, your hair benefits from a healthy lifestyle. Playing sports and eating sensibly go together, so you’ll automatically start caring more

about what you put into your body. That’s important, because eating healthy and regularly makes your hair more beautiful. Hair consists mainly of protein (keratin) and water. If you don’t get enough iron and

protein, it will eventually take its toll on your hair, making it dry and lacklustre.

HAIR

A short hairstyle is convenient if you have an active lifestyle: you can wash and dry your hair in no time at all. The styles featured on these pages show that short hair can be very feminine. The short cut

is kept slightly longer on top, so you can wear your hair either with your fringe over your forehead or slicked back from your face. His hair is a little longer on top as well, which adds versatility of style. And

that’s a good thing, since you’ll want a different look for the gym than for work!

HAIR

One thing on which all nutritional experts agree is that variety in your diet is important. Broccoli may be very good for you, but you know what they say about too much of a good thing... Your hair and skin also benefit from four portions of oily fish a week – they contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for you. As a general rule, brightly coloured fruit and vegetables are healthy. Tomatoes and spinach, berries and peppers: colour me beautiful!

As a wellness coach to many Dutch celebrities, Carlos Lens owns an exclusive gym in Amsterdam, where you can revitalise your body and spirit. All exercise is supervised by a personal trainer, who creates a personal programme with you based on your goals and fitness level. Losing weight may be one reason to work out, but you may also may be looking to improve your muscle tone or increase stamina. The personal programme created for you is based on physical training, nutrition and finding peace of mind. A nutritional expert is available to provide advice, while mental coach Mabel van Dungen offers meditation classes. In the lounge of the gym you’ll find nutritional supplements and you can also enjoy fresh juices, breakfast, lunch and dinner there. A selection of healthy meals is also available to take away after your workout

Sweets

SWEETsummerPyjamas, pastels and lots of floral patterns... Summer fashion 2012 is sweet as pie, and why wouldn’t it be? The

world is a bitter enough place as it is. This season’s fashions respect nature, and the new floral patterns are anything but matronly. The soft, sheer fabrics even give the flowery dresses an ultra-sexy look. Creative Team Rob Peetoom did the hair!

GOES BALI

This summer, we want candy! Bright colours and pastels are the main trend this season, both in fashion and in home decoration. The look of the moment is soft and romantic, with combinations of lavender blue, mint green, apricot pink, light turquoise and pale lilac. To be totally fashion forward, wear a pastel floral top and a lighter skirt or pair of trousers. So sweet and innocent, at least on the outside…

Even if pastels are not your thing, there are plenty of alternatives, with lots of bright colours to choose from, such as hot pink, scarlet, bright orange, fuchsia, rose red and carrot… It’s your chance to commune with nature! Orange may be the boldest colour of all, with shades ranging from neon to deep sundown orange… a colour to instantly brighten your mood! If you’re feeling bold, wear a single colour from head to toe, or, alternatively, go for a brightly coloured blouse paired with white jeans.

Roses are red, violets are blue...

Slip into something a little more comfortable this summer. You won’t even have to wait will you get home! You can create the most fashionable look with a pair of

wide trousers and a loose top. A pair of silk trousers mixed with a silk jacket or blouse feel as light as a spring

breeze. Silk scarves are an essential accessory. Create a stylish silhouette and a laid-back look, as if you’re

heading for a pyjama party in some steamy boudoir…

BEAUTY

Rob Peetoom’s Hair + Beauty salon offers effective treatments and quality skin products with the right ingredients for any age from 20 to 60. The salon also caters to younger , blemished skin types, 30-year-old skin affected by stress, and ageing 50-something skin. Rob Peetoom Hair + Beauty always offers an effective treatment plan for both men and women (see final page for details on all treatments).

Twenty-something skin may experience blemishes, and while good cleansing products are essential, skin also needs moisture and nourishment. Clean skin is less prone to infection and is better able to absorb skin care products, but it should never be stripped of its natural oils. You should therefore choose a mild cleanser, such as Cell Fusion C Physiological Cleansing Gel and products from the Sensai Silky Purifying line. Young skin must be kept moisturised, and after a microdermabrasion treatment (1.) it is much better able to absorb active ingredients and moisture, so be sure to consult one of our beauty therapists about this treatment.

ACTION PLANBe smart and develop a good daily skin care regimen now, so that people will compliment you on your youthful looks later. Always use a moisturiser with an SPF and realise that, while the sun may be an instant mood lifter, it also causes more wrinkles and spots and ages your skin faster than anything else. If you do want that bronzed look, you’re better off getting it from a jar. And while you’re at it, try to quit smoking and go easy on the alcohol – your skin will thank you. Add a serum like the highly concentrated La Colline’s Moisture Boost to your beauty regimen. Microdermabrasion (1.) is also effective for removing scars and spots.

BEAUTYStress and lack of sleep are problems affecting many thirty-somethings. By the time you reach your 30s you know if you skin is going to either wrinkle or sag. Although that might sound a little unkind, those are roughly the two ways in which the skin ages. How you age is genetic, but it is also influenced by your lifestyle. By the time you reach your 30s, your skin doesn’t bounce back as quickly as it once did, and you need a little help from the outside. This is also the time when pigment spots, caused by too much sun, start appearing on your skin. From age 25 the skin renewal process starts slowing down and all the skin’s functions begin slacking a little. You’ll notice this by dry, taut skin and fine lines around your eyes and other areas. Your skin starts losing moisture because its natural protective layer is damaged by external factors (including the sun and environmental pollution) and internal factors (such as stress and poor diet). Moisturising your skin is very important, since only well-hydrated skin can effectively absorb nutrients. You and the salon’s beauty therapist should choose products that will improve your skin’s condition, such as Sensai’s Prime Solution, which is a breakthrough in skin treatment as it contains Koishimaru Silk EX, an ingredient that boosts your skin’s moisture levels and preps it for any anti-ageing products you might apply afterwards.

ACTION PLANSleep! Relax! Make sure you eat a balanced diet that’s rich in antioxidants and always use UVA and UVB protection, even in winter. To prevent the appearance of any new pigment spots, you should use an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15 every day (your daily moisturiser should definitely have one). Stress, temperature changes in winter and the reduced production of hyaluronic acid all cause dry skin. The ideal ratio of 80% moisture in the dermis, 70% in the epidermis and 13% in the stratum corneum can be achieved by choosing a mesotherapy treatment (2.) at the salon. You might also try IPL (4.), microdermabrasion or a glycolic peel (1.). This treatment eliminates sun damage and will give you healthy, glowing skin. Apart from all the other benefits, a visit to the salon will also relax you, which is just what you need!

With skin losing elasticity in this decade of life, you should use firming products and have the beauty therapist at the salon advise you on what cream to use at this stage of life. Forty-somethings also need a good moisturiser with fewer additives such as colorants, fragrance and parabens, as your skin may be more sensitive to these now. The solution is to get the right products and treatments from the salon, such as a lymphatic drainage massage. This is also when hyperpigmentation starts appearing in your face, making you look older than you really are. Pigment stains affect those who may have indulged in too much sun and overdone the tanning beds when younger. Cell Fusion C products are designed to reduce pigmentation. ACTION PLANIn your forties, you will certainly benefit from a visit to the beauty salon. A professional peeling (exfoliation treatment) (3.) makes your skin look fresh again and ensures that dead skin cells

Hormonal changes also affect your skin: it doesn’t recover as quickly from damage (UV rays), and wrinkles and sagging are now clearly visible. The subcutaneous tissue is very important in keeping skin tight. When this starts to gradually disappear, your cheeks begin to sink and your nasal fold will become more prominent. Also, your jawbone starts to recede a little, while your chin begins to jut more. Collagen remains important, as it keeps skin supple, you can keep collagen levels up by using a good cream. Don’t skimp on effective anti-ageing products either (preferably from quality brands like Sensai and la Colline, which invest in research).

cannot prevent your skin from absorbing nutrients. Control hyperpigmentation with IPL (4.). You will need to use an SPF 15 moisturiser daily, as UV rays are the skin’s greatest enemy. In the sun, use an SPF 30 sunscreen such as Sensai Silky Bronze for Face, which is also available in SPF 50. Massages will help strengthen connective tissue and improve circulation. In addition, toxins are removed more efficiently and the production of collagen is stimulated, causing skin to look permanently younger.aanmaak van collageen gestimuleerd waardoor er een blijvende huidverjonging ontstaat.

ACTION PLANSerums are concentrated skin treatments containing a higher concentration of active ingredients. They are absorbed quickly by the skin, but since they don’t feel creamy you’ll want to apply moisturiser on top. Be sure to choose a serum that meets your skin’s current needs and change serums on a regular basis, also based on the seasons. Microdermabrasion and glycolic peels (1.) help reduce pigment spots and can be combined with (2.) healing mesotherapy in a micro/meso combination treatment. IPL (4.) helps control rosacea and reduce enlarged pores. Choose a cream that stimulates the production of collagen, such as La Colline Express Collagen. We also recommend that you start using ‘intelligent’ make-up; that is, products containing active ingredients and an SPF, so that your makeup has beneficial effects, too. Sensai and Youngblood are designed for all ages, with Youngblood, our mineral make-up, being particularly suited to sensitive skin.

As the skin ages, it becomes thinner and more sensitive. Broken capillaries (rosacea) become more visible, although your beauty therapist can effectively treat this condition. The quality of the skin deteriorates, which leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. By pampering stem cells with the use of modern ingredients, you can improve the quality of the skin and reduce wrinkles. At this age, fat starts disappearing between your cheekbones and jawbone, while cheeks start to fall and diminish, giving them a more concave shape. To retain volume in your face, you might consider temporary fillers. It’s very important that you start a skin maintenance regimen now. Visit Rob Peetoom Hair + Beauty and we will create an action plan for you.

ACTION PLANNo matter how good you take care of your skin, it can still look dull and lifeless. This is because firm skin – that is, a smooth surface – is important for light reflection, as it reflects more light. Ten per cent of the existing light is reflected directly by the skin; the remaining ninety per cent of the light is absorbed by the skin and reflected by the deeper cells. Your skin will be smoother if you get regular peeling (3.) or microdermabrasion treatments (1.) Consult your beauty therapist in choosing creamy products with rich formulas you can use at home. Your main concern should be the quality of the product rather than the price. Kanebo Sensai Premier The Cream is an excellent choice. If your lip line and brows are losing definition, be sure to ask your beauty therapist about semi-permanent make-up.

Men’s skin doesn’t differ all that much from women’s skin, but it’s thicker. Their skin is also smoother because they shave every day, but more damaged due to the use of razors. However, this doesn’t mean that men can’t have skin problems or won’t develop wrinkles. Skin that has been overexposed to the elements is prone to redness, revealing broken capillaries. Although men’s skin tends to be slightly oilier, it still needs moisture, especially after shaving, when skin is taut and sensitive. Skin may suffer from flakiness, redness or itching. The salon’s beauty therapist knows exactly how to handle these problems and will create a treatment plan.

ACTION PLANRegular deep-cleansing and peelings (exfoliating treatments) (3.) guarantee that he will like what he sees when he looks in

BEAUTYthe mirror. The fast-working La Colline Express is perfect for men who are pressed for time. The beauty therapist has just the products to reduce spots and blemishes, while an IPL treatment visibly reduces the appearance of broken capillaries. Microdermabrasion or peeling treatments are also very effective in removing acne scars in men of all ages. The treatment causes skin to better absorb active ingredients, with immediate results.

TOUCH-UPAfter your treatment, our beauty therapists will be pleased to give you a complimentary make-up touch-up.

1. MICRODERMABRASIONSuitable for all skin types, including dark skin. What is it? Microdermabrasion is a technique that involves the painless removal of the topmost layers of the skin using special microdermabrasion crystals to reveal smooth, radiant and even skin underneath. The treatment diminishes the appearance of scars, spots and wrinkles and will make you positively glow with health. How long does the effect remain visible? Depending on the quality of your skin, the result will be visible for weeks. How many treatments do I need to see results? The result will be visible after three weekly or biweekly treatments. Depending on skin quality, we recommend a single treatment or course of treatments, which is more effective. Regardless, you will see results within no time. What is the length of the treatment? Treatments take one hour, preceded by a pre-treatment consultation. After the treatment, you will need to stay out of the sun for a few days and treat your skin with a special nourishing cream. Does it hurt? No. How much does it cost? €132.50, combined with mesotherapy.

2. MESOTHERAPYSuitable for all skin types, especially dry skin. What is it? Mesotherapy is a treatment used for face, neck and cleavage.

It involves ultrasonic vibrations using hyaluronic acid and a blend of carefully balanced minerals and vitamins that improve circulation, make skin healthier, tighter and more radiant and diminish fine wrinkles. How long does the effect remain visible? This may range from several weeks to several months. How many treatments do I need to see results? You will start to see visible results after five or six treatments, and the effect will remain if you come in for maintenance treatments once every three months. What is the length of the treatment? The treatment by itself takes 20 minutes, but it is often combined with a microdermabrasion treatment. Does it hurt? No, not really. After the treatment you will need to stay out of the sun for one day and avoid tanning beds. How much does it cost? The price of a mesotherapy/microdermabrasion combo is €135.50.

3. PEELINgSuitable for all skin types, except very sensitive skin. What is it? The top layer of your skin is removed using a mild enzymatic peeling, the Cell Fusion C enzyme peel, revealing more beautiful, smoother skin underneath. This cosmetic peeling is suitable even for the driest skin types and very effective in the treatment of pigment spots, skin ageing, dull skin, scars, and acne. How long does the effect remain visible? Depending on the quality of your skin, this may range from several weeks to several months. Peelings also dramatically improve the appearance of acne-prone skin. How many treatments do I need to see results? You and your beauty therapist may agree on a course of 3 to 5 treatments or a combination treatment, again depending on skin quality. What is the length of the treatment? You should schedule one hour for the treatment. Your skin may be a little red afterwards, and you absolutely should avoid the sun after the treatment. Does it hurt? No. Although you may experience some discomfort during the treatment, this will disappear as soon as it’s over. How much does it cost? €75

4. IPLSuitable for all skin types except dark skin. What is it? IPL (an acronym for Intense Pulsed Light) is commonly used to remove unwanted hair, as well as to treat rosacea, pigment spots and enlarged pores. IPL involves the use of xenon flash lamp light technology, a concentrated form of ‘ordinary’ light consisting of different wavelengths. The technology allows light energy to penetrate deeply into the skin’s dermis, causing the underlying layers of skin to tighten, which evens skin and minimises enlarged pores. How long does the effect remain visible? The effects of an IPL treatment will remain visible for many weeks or even months. How many treatments do I need to see results? Depending on your needs, your skin can visibly improve from a single treatment, while in other cases a course of treatments may be recommended. What is the length of the treatment? The treatment takes approximately 20 minutes, depending on the area to be treated. However, you may wish to combine the treatment with a facial. Does it hurt? No, although you may experience some discomfort: your skin will feel hot after the treatment and show signs of redness. These symptoms will disappear if you cool your skin immediately after the treatment. How much does it cost? The price depends on the treatment. For example, removing rosacea from both cheeks costs €101.

PLEASE NOTE: some treatments may be covered by your health insurance. Rob Peetoom will be pleased to advise you.

Sylvia Tervoort knows exactlywhat makes someone a good Rob Peetoom stylist. ‘You obviously need to be trained in cutting and colouring techniques, have product knowledge and be creative, but above all you need to be aware of our philosophy, since we do a lot more than simply cut people’s hair. Customers are all different, with their own personalities, so you need to talk to them to find out their needs and expectations.’ Communication skills are therefore essential for all stylists.

Sylvia (32), who started as a trainee at Rob Peetoom back in 1997, has been the Educational Manager at the Academy for the past three years. The Academy is based in a light, spacious building in Amsterdam. On a weekly basis, Sylvia supervises dozens of juniors and stylists at all levels in the main room of the Academy, which features chairs with wash basins, long tables and a large screen with chairs in front. Sylvia: ‘Hair stylists are very visually oriented, which is why we use lots of photos and videos during training. All our juniors train two full days a month. When they finish their hairdressing course they can cut hair, but they haven’t mastered

wigged head represents a different type of woman: a 50-year-old lawyer, a 25-year-old PE teacher and a fashionable 16-year-old girl. How are you going to cut these very different types of women? At the end of the class, we place the heads in a row and inspect all the fringes people have cut. We created a separate training programme for colouring hair, with four levels that are concluded with exams.’ As Sylvia (who trained as a colourist) told us, ‘Colouring is an art in itself. What colour is right for a particular person? How do you prepare the formula? What is possible and what isn’t?’

Expressive faceTwice a year, make-up artist Carla Rep teaches basic and advanced make-up courses at the Academy. Each course includes twelve lessons, and after completing the course, trainees take an all-day exam. We then photograph all the models, which is always a fun part of the course.’ The Academy programme also includes a 3-day Anastasia course. Supervised by brow expert Marijke Vierbergen of Rob Peetoom Hair + Make-up in Hoorn, the stylists learn the sophisticated threading techniques introduced by Hollywood

eyebrow guru Anastasia Soare. The trainees pass the exam if they manage to give three different models the eyebrow shape that adds the most expression to the model’s face. Graduates of the Rob Peetoom Academy programme receive their diplomas at the annual Christmas party in December, presented to them by Rob Peetoom himself. Cheered on by their colleagues, the newly promoted juniors and stylists receive their diplomas, another step towards becoming a top stylist and possibly managing their own Rob Peetoom salon someday…

Based on Rob Peetoom’s belief that training provides people with a future, we will be launching a new, external vocational training programme in addition to our own Academy, in conjunction with the Regional Education Centre in Amsterdam. Check our website for the latest news: www.robpeetoom.nl

our technique, which is what they learn here. We teach them to take a good look at the customer first. What is the shape of their face? What type of hair do they have? What sort of image do they project, and what do they want? Trainees learn to look at the person first before cutting their hair.’ The training programme also covers colours and styles, and our juniors bring their own models to the salon, often friends or family members.’

Wigs made of real hairThe Academy employs six head trainers and assistant trainers, who were carefully selected after an internal audition round. Sylvia: ‘The head trainer is a top stylist and the assistants are senior stylists, so our highly experienced hair stylists train their less experienced colleagues. That way, we make maximum use of all the knowledge and experience we have available.’ All the juniors who have been promoted to stylists continue their training, along with the senior stylists and top stylists. At their level, it’s more about the creative process. They practise on dummies with wigs made of real hair. For example, they’re instructed to cut a fringe on each dummy, but each

Trainees at Rob Peetoom Academy really learn the trade inside out

before youand Those who recently completed a hairdressing course start out at the Academy as juniors. Hardworking and talented youngsters move up through the Academy to become stylists, senior stylists or top stylists, all the while continuing their training. As Rob Peetoom Academy Director of Training Sylvia Tervoort told us: ‘Cutting the way you’ve learned it in school is not enough.’STYLE

LONDON,Here we come!

TASCHEN’S LONDON,ISBN 9783836511186

If you happen to be in London for the Olympics this year, be sure to visit the shops of leading international designers such as Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Agent Provocateur and Matthew Williamson. Well worth it even if you’re only looking to window shop!

Stella McCartneyStella McCartney’s designs are chic, exciting and just a touch provocative, mirroring her personal style. Her clothes flatter the feminine form without being explicitly sexy. Stella uses delicate fabrics such as chiffon in soft, neutral shades like ivory and pale pink. Her boutique also sells shoes and handbags – although Stella, a vegetarian, doesn’t use leather – along with lingerie, fragrances and an eco-friendly collection. She is the Creative Director for the 2012 Olympics for Adidas and has designed all the sportswear for the British Olympic team. This makes her a pioneer, as this is the first time ever a leading fashion designer was presented with this honour. Stella’s regular customers include Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. Stella McCartney, 30 Bruton Street.

Agent ProvocateurJoseph Corre and Serena Rees opened the first Agent Provocateur lingerie boutique in 1994, and the rest is history. The store, with its risqué (but never tacky) shop windows, was an immediate success. For their Spring 2012 collection, the design team was inspired by the 1970s, when photographer David Hamilton’s gained notoriety with his soft-focus shots. The models pose in soft focus wearing tight torsolettes, lace body stockings and garter belts that look more like chastity belts. However, the collection as a whole is far from innocent (exhibit A: the whips carried by the models). In the boutiques, whose interiors are all pink and black, the fitting rooms are designed like boudoirs. The salesgirls’ ‘uniforms’ (pink house coats) were designed by none other than Vivienne Westwood. Agent Provocateur, 6 Broadwick Street/16 Pont St Street/303 Westbourne Grove

Matthew WilliamsonWilliamson’s boutique is located on the same street as Stella McCartney’s shop. The beautiful use of colours in the interior reveals his background as Creative Director of Pucci, where he spent many years before striking out on his own. His 2012 summer collection positively shines with beautiful colours including red, green, yellow, blue and orange, featuring beautiful embroidery on shiny fabrics. The boutique also sells swimwear and bags. Loyal customers include Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Helena Christensen. Matthew Williamson, 28 Bruton Street

Paul SmithYou still have to head to London to shop at one of Paul Smith’s boutiques, but at the end of this month he’ll be opening a store on Amsterdam’s PC Hooftstraat. Each of his shops is unique: the one in Los Angeles is a virtually windowless bright pink box, while his Paris boutique was once a café frequented by the likes of Edith Piaf. His London boutiques are located in the high-end Claridge’s Hotel (women’s fashions), Notting Hill (jeans and shoes) and the Royal Arcade on Bond Street (men’s fashions). The design of the Amsterdam store is yet to be revealed, but we can report that it won’t be carrying the full collection due to space constraints. paulsmith.co.uk

HAIR

REDKEN’s new colouring formula is oil-based and ammonia-free; the colour molecules and protein extracts are injected deep into the hair. The result is a deep colour with subtle nuances that make your hair look radiant.

For maximum gloss, try blow-drying your hair using a round brush. This makes it smooth and lets it reflect even more light, adding incredible shine.

The best products for coloured hair are the PUREOLOgY range of shampoos, conditioners and masks, where the colour protection is adapted to your hair type.

There are five series available: HYDRATE for dry hair, PURE VOLUME for fine hair, SUPER SMOOTH for unmanageable hair, ESSENTIAL REPAIR for damaged hair, and the latest line, PERFECT 4 PLATINUM for highlighted hair. The products contain ingredients such as soy protein, mint, papaya and olive oil. The line also includes styling products for all hair types. PUREOLOgY.NL

Keep your coloured hair beautiful in the summer heat with one of the four products from REDKEN’S ExTEND SUN series: SUN TAKE COVER SPF 25, a cream mousse that protects your hair and scalp from the sun and adds extra volume; WATERWEAR, a waterproof cream lotion that protects your hair from the effects of salt and chlorine from the sea and swimming pools; and AFTER SUN SHAMPOO and MASK for washing and conditioning your hair after a day in the sun. HAIR

The best way to protect your hair from the sun is wearing a shawl, cap or cloth hat, with a straw hat being the next best choice. If you plan to go bare-headed, make sure to apply a protective product to your hair to prevent your hair and scalp from drying out. Ask your hairstylist to advise you on the best hair products for your hair type. Good choices include a leave-in treatment such as Redken Extreme Anti-Snap and Redken Argan Oil from their All Soft series. If you have coloured hair, protection is even more important. Use a product such as Take Cover SPF 25 from the Redken Color Extend Sun series, a mousse that protects your hair and scalp from the sun. Since the colour may fade in the sun and chemically treated hair is more prone to damage, you should give it a little extra TLC while

Keep your hair beautiful in the sun

SUNcare

you’re out in the sun. Instead of using a weekly mask, apply one several times a week. We like Redken Rescue Force from the Extreme series. If the treatment weighs down your hair and makes it limp, simply work a little through the ends only. If your hair can handle it, you can also apply some to dry hair before a shampoo and allow to set for a while, so that the active ingredients are not diluted with water. Next, rinse thoroughly and wash with a mild shampoo, followed by conditioner (Redken Clear Moisture Conditioner).

HighlightsSun-lightened hair can look fabulous, but you should never use homemade remedies like lemon juice to bleach your tresses, as it dries them out. Getting highlights done at a salon is a lot gentler on your hair: they lift your colour and you won’t have to deal with pesky roots, as the lighter bits gradually disappear as your hair grows. If you’ve been out in the sun all day, you might want to skip

the blow-dryer, as more heat will only increase dryness. Let your hair dry naturally instead and use the dryer only across the top layer of your hair for a polished look – that way, you’ll still have shine. Apply oil (Redken’s Smooth Down Heat Glide) to your hair to make it smooth and shiny. If you’re looking for a ‘bed head’ or casual, tousled look, choose a product that gives it some texture and definition, such as Wax Blast Redken no. 10 or Redken Style Connection Wool Shake. You can then wear it up in a slightly messy style, using pins to hold it up. We’re also loving the Radiant Sea Spray from Redken’s Nature’s Rescue line, a spray containing algae, aloe vera and soy protein that makes your hair smell ocean fresh and gives it lots of hold.

At the end of the summer, ask your stylist for a ‘shot’ (Redken’s Real Control Shot), which contains a highconcentration of active ingredients. Your hair neverfelt so good! On the next page, you’ll find a summaryof the golden rules of summer hair care.

1. Use a hair product with an SPF (REDKEN TAKE COVER MOUSSE or the WATER WEAR CRÈME)

2. Wash your hair with a shampoo that neutralises salt and chlorine (REDKEN AFTER SUN SHAMPOO).

3. Choose a leave-in treatment to condition your hair (REDKEN LEAVE-IN SMOOTHER), which both cares for your hair and adds lots of shine.

4. While out in the sun all day, when you’re likely to wash your hair more often, use an intensive treatment twice a week (REDKEN AFTER SUN MASK).

5.Blond hair tends to look porous in the sun, so treat your hair with a high proteine product (REDKEN ExTREME SYSTEM). Style your hair using a hair-gloss product (REDKEN gLASS LOOK 01 SMOOTHINg SERUM).

6. Coloured hair needs extra protection to prevent the colour from fading. You should therefore use a product with a high SPF (REDKEN SUN TAKE COVER SPF 25).

7. A dry scalp benefits just as much from sun protection as your hair (REDKEN COLOR ExTEND TOTAL RECHARgE).

8. If you have long hair, braid it or wear it up after applying an SPF product, as this protects your hair and gives it a bit of curl.

9. Wear a cloth hat or shawl for maximum sun protection.
