In This Issue

In my first message as your Co-President, I hardly know what to

say. I am really excited and a bit hesitant of taking on such an im-

portant position. I do hope that I will be helpful, with my wonder-

ful Co-President, Toni Corrigan, and a board of officers who are

talented, efficient, and skillful, make this year 2017-2018 an exciting

and informative year for all of us

Our main goal is to have programs and activities that will empower

women and girls to have a more fulfilling life. There is so much to

be done concerning equal pay for women and protection for wom-

en and girls from sexual harassment. I know that I do not have the

answers to all of your questions, but I will do my best to support

all of you in whatever activities or programs you may have pre-

pared for us.

I attended the National Convention in Washington DC, June, 2017.

In the workshops and dialogue sessions that I attended, I listened

to projects from other states and branches. I was able to get some

new ideas. I know that we already have good programs and activi-

ties but, we can always use new ideas from other branches and the

State AAUW. AS you already know, I welcome any suggestions

and advice that you may have for me. Please don’t think that I will

be insulted because I really have so much to learn from all of you.

Let’s make this an exciting and wonderful year 2017-2018 and have

lots of FUN!

JANUARY GENERAL MEETING

Jodi Liggett is the Vice President for Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Arizona, where she oversees re-productive health and rights policy objectives, and manages the work of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, the separate organization that educates voters and candidates for public office.

Liggett brings an unusual breadth of experience and knowledge to her work. She most recently served as senior policy advisor for Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton where she was instrumental in two of Phoenix’s most significant achievements: housing every chronically homeless veteran-the first city in the nation to do so, and the passage of Phoenix’s equal pay ordinance. She has a continuing role in Phoenix as chair of the Phoenix Women’s Commission. Liggett is the former CEO of the Arizona Foundation for Women and currently chairs their board. In state government Liggett served as Senior Policy Advisor to Arizona Governor Jane Dee Hull and as legislative staff in the Arizona House. Her message at our Monday, January 15 general meeting will focus on women’s

rights in the Trump era. She will focus on a lot of the non-legislative behind-the-scenes policy changes that are having devastating effects on women

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

The jewelry party held on Nov. 4th was quite a success! There were twenty members who attended, and also about 20 friends or neighbors. There was a large assortment of jewelry from which to choose and Sarah, our “Queen of Bling” was very helpful. Helen Semple’s house was a lovely venue; many were happy to relax on the patio, have punch and a cookie baked by Susan Decker, Joyce Ellenbecker, Ann Slattery, and Karen Heitman and visit with Margaret Horn, who was able to be there. Early estimates are that we earned in excess of $800 for our local scholarship fund. Some people are ordering on line, so Sa-rah didn’t have an exact amount yet. Since this was our major fundraiser for local scholarships this year, we’re thankful to all members who participated. If you are someone who opts to send a check instead, it’s not too late to do so. Just make the check out to AAUWSEVB , and be sure to write “local scholarships” in the detail line. Ruth Rees Nancy Andrews Local Scholarship committee
