Stand up for pride!
Welcome to the 34th Annual Capital City Pridefest! “Changing Minds Together”
is something that we all need to do each and every day.
With all of the recent suicides and reports of bullying in the State of Iowa, we
all need to stand together and start Changing Minds. We need to pull together and help
everyone who has thoughts of not being worth it to educate and make them aware of the
people out there who can help.
Being part of the “State Wide Suicide Prevention” panel for the LGBT youth, I was able
to attend a break out session in Ames at the Iowa Pride Network assembly. Listening to the
teens who attended it opened my eyes, as well as talking to several adults who are close to
some of the family members who have recently experienced the loss of a love one to bullying.
It starts with all of us here today — all of us reading this article. Together we need to
Change the Minds of the “family members” that are part of our community. Let them know
that they are not alone and that they do not have to go through this alone.
When I was being harassed, made fun of and having hate mail sent to my family, I would
have loved someone to talk to about all of this. That is what all of us are here for. I want all
of you to think of how YOU can Change a Mind, what you can do right here in our com-
munity to make sure we all feel loved and accepted. Each and every one of us has something
special to offer someone, and all we have to do is touch one person at a time.
Your Pride Board is trying to help Change Minds by becoming more involved in the
community and not just producing a great weekend party. We were sponsors for the AIDS
Walk in Des Moines, a scholarship in our name for the First Friday Breakfast Club, a Safe
Schools event and more. This year our board had some struggles, and I thank you all for
believing in us — and thank you to the ones who hung in there and helped to make this the
best Pride in Iowa!
For the last four years, it has been a pleasure to serve on the Pride Board and for some
of those years, being the president. It is with great honor to say that I have had a pleasure
working with so many amazing people through the years, as well as the community. I greatly
appreciate all of the support I have received over the years with changing the way Pride has
evolved.
A great way to show how much Pride has changed over the years is why we’ve asked Brian
and Greg to be our Grand Marshals this year. When the two of them where in charge of
Pride, they changed the way people thought of Pride and brought in the “Rally” that really
brought out the numbers. And now the last four years we have grown, making PrideFest a
weekend event that we have had 20,000 people attend. We have gotten vendors from not
just Iowa but surrounding states and entertainment that we never thought we would be able
to have here in Iowa.
This year I am hoping will be even bigger and better than last year. We are changing
things up a little and bringing you some great national entertainment as well as a lot of local
entertainers. I hope you all enjoy this weekend, and help make it the BEST PRIDE EVER!!!
Of course, this year is bittersweet for me, as this is my last year serving as your president
for Capital City Pride. It has been a wonderful experience, with some thorns along the way,
but one that I will never forget or take for granted. I have met amazing people, learned so
much about our community and most of all, watched Pride evolve to where it is today.
I want to thank the community, the sponsors, vendors, businesses in the East Village,
advertisers and the volunteers for the last four years. Without all of you, none of this would
have been possible. A heartfelt thank you to the board that I have had the pleasure to serve
with — I owe you so much. You hung in there with me when things got tough but never stop
believing in me. You all were up for change and accepted it with open arms. You all have a
very special place in my life, and I will never forget each and every one of you. With that said,
let’s all have a great weekend and “Help Change Minds Together” this next year and for all
the years to come.
Best regards, Justin DeVries
