Dear Parents As mentioned in last weekrsquos newsletter we will be visited in March by an accreditation team from the IPC and I will use the biweekly newsletter to update existing parents and inform new parents about what the IPC is and how it impacts us as a learning focused school

What is the IPCThe International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is the curriculum we follow in Primary at the International School of The Hague The IPC is a comprehensive thematic creative curriculum for 3-11 year olds with a clear process of learning and with specic learning goals for every subject for international mindedness and for personal learning It is one of the most important supporting elements in helping our school become focused on learning Further information can be found at the IPC web site httpswwwgreatlearningcomipc

To assess the impact of IPC on learning at ISH we are currently undergoing a Self-Review This will enable us to review our implementation of the IPC its impact on learning and make decisions about developments we need to make to improve The Self-Review is based on nine criteria

Against each of these criteria we need to gather evidence so that we can judge ourselves as

A clear focus on childrenrsquos learningOften when you ask a child what they are learning they will describe the activity they are doing Although it is important that the activity is stimulating and enjoyable it is not the end product and unless it has led to learning it could be argued that it is worthless In the IPC it is important that we make explicit the learning intentions for

If children do not know what they are learning how can they assess their progress towards it It is also important to inform parents and carers so that they can support the learning when the children are away from the school environment

As well as sharing the learning intentions teachers at ISH discuss learning with groups and individuals allowing

School NewsThis week we were visited by Lama Pema Dorjee from Tibet The three Year 6 classes had collaborated to produce some thought provoking questions which they posed to him Pema Dorjee and his entourage were impressed not only by the childrenrsquos astute questioning but also by their exemplary behaviour It has been a busy week for Year 6 as on Monday as part of their Dutch studies they took part in an incredibly informative visit to the Binnenhof where they learned about the Government of the Netherlands

Travelling to and from school has been rather dicult recently and your eorts to arrive on time have been greatly appreciated As you know space inside school is limited so I would like to remind you that unless the weather conditions are particularly severe parents are requested not to wait inside the Glass House at the beginning and end of the day Could I also please ask that you carefully consider the weather conditions before deciding whether or not to allow your child to travel to school by bicycle Your cooperation on these matters is greatly appreciated

Yesterday Year 1 children took part in a spinning workshop and Year 2 children visited the Clara Maria cheese farm

I will be out of school on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday of next week as I am a part of the IPC accreditation team visiting a school in Oman

Have a safe relaxing and enjoyable weekend

Lama - Geshe Pema DorjeeOn the 22nd of January 2013a Lama from India visited the International School of the Hague on a fundraising mission to build a school just for girls in Tibet It is just for girls because if families have enough money to send a child to school they would choose a boy because the girls are valued as housekeepers to look after younger siblings and the house One of the many problems with the house id that the cooker gives o fumes that if inhaled could damage the lungs and eyes because the houses do not have proper ventilation

The day before the Lama arrived we (the Year 6rsquos) received a walk-through of what would take place the next day When the day nally arrived everyone was excited yet nervous at the same time Everyone was presented with a rose to place in a vase next to the Lama When we arrived the Lama was smiling and thanking us gracefully for the roses We took are places and the six interviewers asked their questions The Lama answered well and with much detail and many examples Everyone listened attentively and seemed to soak everything up The school will be a boarding school with 6-10 classrooms and bedrooms for the girlsMany people agreed that their favourite bit was when a man went to the Lamarsquos mother and told her she was pregnant with a baby boy and predicted he will one day become a Lama Everyone also agreed that the Lama had done a very good jobBy Riley and James

Mr Rae continued

If children do not know what they are learning how can they assess their progress towards it It is also important to inform parents and carers so that they can support the learning when the children are away from the school environment

As well as sharing the learning intentions teachers at ISH discuss learning with groups and individuals allowing

understand what will help them continue on their learning journey The teacher carefully records this learning so they can monitor and facilitate progress These records then inform future planning

the school Through regular home school communication and the letter sent to introduce each Theme the class teacher provides parents and carers with information to help them engage in their childrenrsquos learning At ISH we always ask the question Are we busy or are we busy learning

Shared outcomes about the kinds of children we are helping to develop

These outcomes are encapsulated in a number of documents and publications including Squish learning policy school guide mission statement and web pages They are also evidenced by the behaviour and actions of our children teachers and other stakeholders

Special Visit

With the weather being stable once more we will start registering late arrivals to school as of Monday 28 February
