Make regular visits to the library
Ask your child about stories read and how they felt
Reading As A Habit
Spend quality time & 1-1 time with you child regularlyIt’s more impactful to spend short periods of time with your child frequently than to spend a long time with your child once in a whileWrite notes to encourage, motivate or about your feelings and thoughtSkype or call them if you are overseasEngage your child besides doing homework e.g. trek outdoors, learn a new skill, pursue a common hobbyAvoid being helicopter parents
Connecting with Your Child

Reflection - Encourage them to share how they felt.
Independence - Ask about what he/she can do to prevent/avoid occurrence next time.
Follow up - If need arises, check with the teacher. Allow teacher to follow up pertaining to the issues.
Working Out Issues with Your Child
Get your child to think through these questions when they make mistakes.
Be aware of these signs:• not doing homework• showing disrespect • change of behaviour
• What have I done that is wrong?
• What is the right thing to do?• How have my actions
affected others?• How will I feel if it happens to
me?• What can I learn from this?• How can I choose to do the
right thing the next time?
Helping Your Child Learn from Mistakes
Children’s concept of friends may be like an on-off switch. They may quarrel often but they can get back together quickly. They seldom bear grudges.
Focus is usually on play and having fun. They understand concept of turn-taking and rules of games.
They may invent “secret clubs” with rules of membership. But these usually do not last long.
Making Friends
• Form good habit of waking up andarriving on time. For somechildren, it requires patience andconditioning.
• Do not allow your child to missschool too often. This can lead toschool refusal that causes learningand behaviour issues.
• Communicate with us and the teachers if school refusal persists.
• Parents: It is your responsibility to ensure your child attends school regularly.
Attendance & Punctuality
Praise your child for the effort, not the outcomes.
Recognize progression, not perfection.
Don’t indulge too much in material rewards.
Consider other forms of rewards e.g. family
outings, writing notes of motivation, hugs and love.
Motivating Your Child
Myopia & Obesity remain a growing concern.
Obesity 2012 [66,000 / 11.5%]; 2020 [75,000 / 14%]
Good eye care habits including taking eye breaks and keeping distance from books and TV.
Regular healthy meals including breakfast.
Drink water instead of soft drinks.
Regular physical and outdoor activities. Health Promotion Board recommends 30 mins everyday.
Physical Well-Being & Health
Inculcate good study habits when doing homework. Schedule a regular time slot for your child to study and learn.
School homework can last between 0.5 to 1 hour each day. This may include non-written work like reading.
Study Time
Be mindful on the hours your child spends in computer or hand-held games.
Schedule fixed time to allow your child to have cyber activities. Be strict with the regulation.
Be involved with your child in all cyber activities.
Show your child the REAL world instead of just the virtual world.
Cyberwellness
How do we define success for our children?
What do we really want for our children?
Thank You!
