Hello and welcome to WashU! If you decide to go through the recruitmentprocess, there are some things you should know. At the beginning of the
recruitment process, you will be assigned a Recruitment Counselor. ARecruitment Counselor is a member of one of the Panhellenic chapters on
campus, but for the duration of recruitment they have disaffiliated from theirchapter in order to give you unbiased advice. They are there to reduce the
pressure on you to join a specific chapter and to help you make the decisionthat is right for you. At the end of each day you will meet with your
Recruitment Counselor and they will offer you counsel if you seek it. Theyhave sworn to keep all information you share confidential, and you should feel
free to ask them any questions you have and tell them how you are feeling. They are available to you at all times and are a valuable resource, but most
importantly, they are a listener and want what is best for you!
We hope that you choose to go through recruitment and as RecruitmentCounselors, we are so excited to meet you and help you through this process!

Recruitment is a mutual selection process that balances the preferences of each potential newmember with those of the existing Panhellenic sorority chapters. The Panhellenic Associationstrives to allow every woman an opportunity to find a sorority that best suits their personality, interests, and future goals, while providing an organized and unbiased membership selectionprocess for the chapters. Invitations are only guaranteed to potential new members for the first round. There is noguarantee that a PNM will be invited to attend the second, third, or fourth event rounds.Invitations to subsequent rounds are made based on the selections of the chapters and thepreferences of the potential new members. PNM schedules will be maximized so they are able tomeet with as many chapters as possible during their recruitment experience. There is no guarantee that a woman will receive a bid to any sorority. However, if a potentialnew member progresses through the week and attends all the events that they are invited to, andduring the fourth round lists each of chapter(s) they attend on their preference sheet that night, they will receive a bid to one of those chapter(s). There is no specific formula that explains why a woman is released from a particular chapter,or why a woman prefers one chapter more than another. The Panhellenic Association makesevery effort to allow each potential new member the best opportunity to join a sorority, but thereare no guarantees that a woman will be placed within a specific sorority. It is important to keepan open mind during recruitment week and to use the time to meet and make new friends!

meet new people—and now I'm surrounded by agroup of women who empower me to be my bestself and are always there to support me. Some ofmy best friends today are people that I met as a
result of joining the Panhellenic community
What should I talk about during recruitmentparties? It is important to be yourself and allow theconversation to develop naturally! Just as you arepresenting yourself to chapters, chapters arepresenting themselves to you. Therefore, it isimportant to ask questions that allow you to makecomparisons and decisions. What should I expect my recruitment days tobe like?Recruitment can be tiring both physically andemotionally. However, it is up to you to decide howpositive your recruitment experience will be. A goodattitude is essential to enjoying this opportunity. While some days and conversations may feeltedious and repetitive, every chapter should be givenan equal opportunity to get to know you and youthem.
How do chapters decide whom to invite back?As your schedule of parties is reduced from round to
round, the number of women each sorority isallowed to invite back is also reduced. Just as
sororities must make the decision regarding whomto invite back, you also submit preferences of which
chapters you'd like to visit in subsequent rounds.
What if I am shy? Some of the sisters in each chapter are as nervous to
talk with you as you are to talk with them. Everymember of a sorority contributes her individual
talents to the sisterhood and chapters want memberswith a variety of personalities. There is no reason tofeel insecure when speaking with sisters. Sororities
want to impress you as much as you want toimpress them!

I've heard some sororities have differentreputations. How should I handle thatinformation? The only opinion of each chapter that should affectyour decision is yours. Chapters vary from campusto campus and from year to year depending onmembership. If you allow someone else's perceptionsto influence you, you may not be satisfied with yourchoice in a sorority. Each chapter is made up ofwomen with a range of personalities and qualities. Ifyou hear any derogatory remarks about a particularchapter or sisters, we ask you to please inform yourrecruitment counselor and to disregard them. If I go through recruitment, am I obligated tojoin? No, some women choose not to accept their bids. Ifyou're not sure you would like to go throughrecruitment, we encourage you to try in order tomeet new people and make friends. Recruitment isan opportunity for you to visit all chapters, get aglimpse of Panhellenic life at Wash U, and see foryourself if you would like to join the community.
I am a legacy to a sorority. Is there anythingspecial I should know?
You should indicate your legacy status when youregister for recruitment. Please be sure to indicate
what relationship you have with the member(mother, sister, etc.) and where they went to school.
Every chapter handles legacies differently andlegacy PNMs should not feel obligated to join aparticular sorority on the sole basis of a family
connection.
Do I need letters of recommendation prior to recruitment?
The chapters at WashU do not requirerecommendations from alumnae prior to meeting
you during recruitment, although chapters willaccept them.

Actives will escort you out at the end of each event. You don't have to worry about seeking out actives tospeak to - they will approach you throughout thetime you are with their chapter!
For Arête Day, you will travel to all nine chapters with yourrecruitment group. For the following days, you will receive aschedule in the morning of which events you will attend that
