@ Reddam
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I am pleased to welcome you all back to school for Term 2. From my interaction with the
students this week, it seems that a great many holidays were enjoyed and the students
certainly are ready for a great term.
I would like to welcome four new students to our school: Leila Lewis, Bassam
Yasin, Szonja Csakvari and Natasha Pegios. I know that the buddies are committed to
making these students feel welcome and secure. We are pleased to have you in our
Reddam family.
During the holidays, we received the wonderful news that our PE teacher, Ms Nadina
Teskera, welcomed her new baby, Taylor, into the world. Born on 30 March, Taylor
arrived weighing 3.2kg and both she and Nadina are doing well. Congratulations! We
wish you all the happiness in the world.
We have received news of an outstanding achievement of our past student, Kai
Mashimo. Kai was named the winner of the Middle Division in Scenario Writing for the
Australian affiliate for 2014, under the guidance and mentorship of Ms Nicolette Gash.
Subsequently, his narrative was then submitted internationally and he has placed in the
top five of the Middle Division at an international level. Furthermore, Kai's narrative will be
published in a well-known FPS resource for 2015. We are so very proud of Kai and com-
mend him for this achievement. Thank you to Ms Gash who spent many hours with Kai
over the course of many months ensuring that he was able to produce work of this
standard.
Today, we commemorated the ANZACs through two significant and moving assemblies.
The Year 6 students joined the middle school assembly which was a very solemn and se-
rious affair with the Year 9 judiciary leading the assembly. The Year K – 5 students were
part of their own assembly, led by the Year 6 Senators who impressed upon the students
the importance of ANZAC Day and paid great respect to the fallen soldiers from WWI
who lost their lives. Miss Marie Manche went above and beyond to make today signifi-
cant by hand making every child in the school a red paper poppy to wear. It was mov-
ing to see every student adorned with red, paying their respect to the incredibly men
and women, the ANZACs, who sacrificed a tremendous amount for this wonderful coun-
try. Thank you to Mr Warren Garratt for producing this outstanding ANZAC assembly.
Next week, the Music Department will host the String Competition on Monday night in
Adelaide Hall. Students who have been selected to take part will perform in front of an
external adjudicator and an audience. We are looking forward to this event and seeing
the depth of the talent at Reddam House.

On Thursday, the Year 6 parents are invited to the Parent/Teacher interviews. This is an op-
portune time for parents to discuss any concerns they may have and for teachers to com-
municate relevant information about the students’ progress. The online booking form will
close on Monday 27 April at 12pm.
Our sports teams are already immersed in training sessions and games and I am looking for-
ward to hearing the results and match reports next week.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend, with sunny, dry weather, as we celebrate ANZAC Day at
various Dawn Services around Sydney.

The children settled back into their school routine quickly and easily, refreshed and rearing to
go! They were excited to catch up with their friends and share many adventurous stories
about their holiday trips and outings. Each child did their very own recount writing about the
holidays. They concentrated very hard on their letter formation and sounding out the words
that they didn’t know how to spell.
Here are some of the things that they wrote:
Zara Erder: I went to Abigail’s house and we played weddings.
Noah Bonnell: I went to Sealife with Poppa.
Rafael Rodov: I went to Skyzone and I jumped all day.
Saskia Rubinsztein: I went to South Africa to see the penguins at the beach.
Maxwell Giddings: In the holidays I went to the Easter Show. I had a drink and went on rides.
Isaac Ching: In the holidays I went to the beach with my Mum. I had a swim.
During Mathematics we continued to talk about the ‘partners of ten.’ The children love the
story of the boy who had his tenth birthday party and I am sure that if you ask them they will
be willing to share it with you too.
We would like to welcome Leila Lewis into the Kindergarten class. She has settled in so well
and has lots of lovely friends to look after her.

KINDERGARTEN
Welcome back to a wet start to Term 2 in Year 1. This term we are learning about "Weather"
and "Transport" in our Science and HSIE units of work. Students have been enjoying writing
about their holiday adventures, and revising their number skills using the iPads.

YEAR 1
Students have returned refreshed and excited about the upcoming events in Year 2. In HSIE
we will be looking at festivals and celebrations from different countries. This week we have
focussed on the historical significance of ANZAC Day. The students have enjoyed research-
ing various symbols of ANZAC Day. They have listened to stories and engaged in a range of
YEAR 2
The Year 3 students have had an exciting first week back at school. Term 2 began with an
informative, hands-on introduction to the fascinating world of ‘ Simple Machines’ in Science.
Students have discussed and started to recognise typical ‘ simple machines’ that we use in
our everyday lives and how they assist us to complete daily activities. In HSIE, the Year 3
students have commenced their studies of the unit, ‘Sydney, Then and Now”. Students have
shown a keen interest in learning about the impressive and colourful history of Sydney, the
city in which they live. The history of the ANZACs and ANZAC Day has also provided a signifi-
cant focus in HSIE this week. The Year 3 students have demonstrated a remarkable level of
respect for those who have been involved in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations
around the world, particularly those who fought at Gallipoli during World War 1, incredibly
100 years ago. Thank you Year 3 for an enthusiastic and insightful beginning to the term, well
done!

YEAR 4
Could we survive without plants? Students viewed
an interesting film and discussed this question, con-
cluding that plants are incredibly important to us.
They were surprised to learn that we couldn’t pro-
duce plastic without plants. This week, students
have commenced a study of flowers, bees and
pollination. Flowers were dissected and studied
with a magnifying glass. Students identified male
and female parts of the flower and used scientific
terminology when discussing what they could see.
Cross-sectional models were also created. This re-
quired students to demonstrate their understanding
of flower structure. Well-done Year 4 on an excel-
lent start to Term 2.
On returning from their holiday break, Year 6 have immediately immersed themselves back
into work in the English classroom. Over the course of Term 2, Year 6 will be studying the pow-
er of advertising and the way in which advertisements position people to believe certain ide-
as. It is fair to say that Year 6 will be bombarded with a range of famous advertisements and
as the weeks progress, they will be able to confidently explain the visual techniques that
have been specifically employed by advertisers to advertise a certain idea or product.
Here are some advertisements that they will study and by all accounts, this is usually a popu-
lar area of study as students are provided with the opportunity to directly engage with such

HEWBREW
On Thursday this week was Israel's 67th Independence Day!
Students celebrated the day by singing Hebrew songs, making their own Israeli flags, learning
the Hebrew words for blue, white and flag and discussing what Israeli children do to cele-
brate the day.
