Pupils from Ferryhill and Chilton’s primary schools are so fed up trying to dodge dog poop on their way to school that they have set up a campaign

group to try to raise aware-ness about the problem. Hannah, Erin, Harry, Maya, Lee, Ethan, Callum, Tiegan, Lucy, Rowan, Ben, Brodie, Sunny and Leo wrote to the

Chapter to say: “We are the Rights Respecting Am-bassadors at Cleves Cross Primary School and we are working with Approach Too and all the primary schools in Ferryhill and Chilton to let everyone know about our campaign to improve the area we live in by trying to get everyone to clean up the dog mess.“We are passionate about our right to have clean streets and parks to play in and we want all dog owners to meet their responsi-bilities to poop scoop after their pets. “We hate walking to school and getting the stinky mess on our shoes. We don’t like playing on fields that can make us ill. “To help us achieve our goal to clean up the lovely com-munity we live in we want everyone to join us in our campaign. Primary school pupils launch poop scoop campaign

Anti-dog fouling campaigners from Dean Bank Primary School have joined forces with their colleagues at Cleves Cross Primary and other local primaries to raise awareness of the mess they encounter in play parks and on their way to school every day.

Funding is open to green-fin-gered groups in Chilton and Ferryhill to help them spruce up their communities.Durham County Council is making up to £500 avail-able to organisations to put towards environmental improvements.Anyone who would like to apply for the cash must be willing to take part in the Royal Horticultural Soci-ety’s It’s Your Neighbour-hood scheme, which gives smaller community groups the chance to get involved in the wider Britain in Bloom activities.The free initiative also allows volunteer-led gar-dening groups to take part in projects that are relevant to local issues, such as cleaning up a park, revamping a run-down back lane or adding floral or planting displays to outdoor open spaces.Examples of schemes which were previously awarded funding included a commu-

nity garden, conservation of a closed burial ground and planting of wildflow-ers, bulbs and shrubs and planting of fruit trees and fruit hedges to encourage people to grow food and promote wildlife.All the projects will be recognised at an awards ceremony later this month.Any groups wishing to apply for the funding will receive guidance and support from the council’s Civic Pride and Clean and Green teams.Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, Durham County Council, said: “We would encourage any community groups in the county wanting to make a positive change to their environment to apply for the funding.”Applications are open between 1st October and 13th November. The Nursery World Awards are the most prestigious event in the early years calendar, which is reflected by the fact that the big night is typically attended by over 1000 guests, with a mixture of all early years profession-als.The winners of the 2015 awards were unveiled at the Brewery in London on Saturday 26th September.Host, Barney Harwood, a presenter on the popular children’s television pro-gramme, Blue Peter, con-ducted the ceremony. Child’s Play Private Nursery

of Ferryhill made this year’s finalists and the nursery staff were celebrating when they received a Highly Com-mended award for their work in the Online and Social Media Category. Host, Barney said, “The e-portal system on the nurs-ery’s website means parents are more involved and informed about their child’s progress and development.“By logging in with their username and password, parents can read observa-tions made by nursery staff about their child, comment on their progress and upload

their own images from a mobile device or computer wherever they are. “Child’s Play website also boasts numerous other features aimed at engaging parents and families, includ-ing a feedback form and advice sheets, and it actively uses facebook.”Twenty-six-year-old owner and manager, Laura Leigh Wayman said, “It was such an honour to be shortlisted, let alone receiving a Highly Commended award on the night itself. “I never would have expected out of the thou-sands of entries in this category that we would have been recognised. “In the two and a half years since the nursery opened we have celebrated so much success and it is the hard work of my staff who have bought this all to fruition.”

St. Aidan’s Church, Chilton is holding a Social and Supper Evening with pie and peas on Tuesday 13th October at 7pm.Entertainment will be provided by the Sedgefield Hand Bell Ringers.A spokesperson for the

The Council intend in not less than 7 days from the date of this notice to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act, 1984, as amended, to close to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic of a 28m length of Magdalene Place that extends north westerly from house nos. 5/6, Ferryhill to enable telecom cabinet and cable-ducting works to be undertaken. The maximum duration of the temporary closure under the Order is 18 months and is required from 26.10.15 and for the duration of the works, anticipated to be 2 weeks. However, on rare occasions, alternative dates for closures may be necessary and these will be signed accordingly. Alternative routes: via other local roads and footways in the area.

The above-named Order made by the Council on 01.04.15 became operational on 31.03.15 has been continued in force from 06.10.15, as approved by the Secretary of State for Transport, for up to a further 12 months, or until the works are complete and the bridge is safe to re-open, whichever is the sooner. The effect of the Order prohibits pedestrian traffic from proceeding on a 10m length of Footpath no. 17 Chilton Parish that passes over Mill Wood Footbridge, west of Chilton to enable remedial works to be carried out on the said Footbridge. Alternative route: from the southern side of the closure from Footpath Nos 78 Spennymoor Parish southwards to Millwood Farm onto Footpath No. 5 Windlestone Parish then south easterly onto Footpath No 17 Chilton Parish, then easterly via the associated footway of A689 to Rushyford roundabout, northerly via the associated footway of A167 then westerly along the associated footway of C36 passing Blue House Farm to Public Footpath No 17 to the northern side of the closure, and vice versa.

The areas of the Flanders and Picardy saw some of the most appalling fighting of World War One. There was complete devas-tation. Where homes, farms and countryside had been, a sea of mud and carnage engulfed everything. One thing, however did survive each year: the warm weather brought up poppies. Their vibrant colour in this mud and desolation gave heart and hope to the soldiers fighting in the trenches, and so the poppy became a symbol of hope and reassurance.The poppy became rec-ognised as an important reminder of the war and in Britain under the guidance of Mayor George Howson MC, a small group of disabled servicemen started to make artificial poppies. So the Poppy Appeal, as we know it, spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today.All money raised by the

Poppy Appeal still goes to help serving and ex-servicemen and their wives and their dependants in times of need through the Royal British Legion’s Be-nevolent Fund.Poppies will be on sale throughout Ferryhill from Saturday 24th October and will be available at most business outlets. Anyone wishing to purchase car poppies, large poppies, wooden crosses or enamel poppy badges can do so from Ferryhill Town Hall.This year the 2015 enamel poppy badges are a limited issue and will be sold on a first come basis. They are available now, so anyone wishing to purchase a badge should do so at their earliest convenience.Any business outlets within Ferryhill who did not receive poppies and col-lecting tins last year who would wish to participate in this year’s appeal should contact John Rogerson at the Town Hall on 01740 652157 before Monday 19th October.

Chilton Colliery Banner fundraiser

A social event was held on Saturday afternoon, 3rd October, in the Wheatsheaf, Chilton, to raise funds for taking the Chilton Banner to Durham for the annual Miners’ Gala next summer.A spokesperson for the Chilton Banner Committee said, “The afternoon was, as usual, a huge success and resulted in a grand total of £340 being raised.

“Chilton Banner Commit-tee would like to thank the Wheatsheaf for their generous hospitality in hosting the event, Connor for providing first class en-tertainment and everyone who came along to support our fundraiser as well as those who kindly donated prizes for the raffle. “A great afternoon was had by all.”

More than 200 vehicles were left either un-secured or with items of value on display when officers carried out force-wide car security checks this week.Police officers, PCSOs and neighbourhood watch vol-unteers all took part in the patrols, which were carried out across County Durham and Darlington.The aim of the opera-tion was to highlight the consistently high numbers of vehicles that are left vulnerable to thieves, and offer suitable crime prevention advice to those motorists.More than 1,200 vehicles were checked and in total 220 were found to have valuables left in view, or were unsecured.Detective Chief Inspector Dave Ashton said, “We know that a key contribut-ing factor in vehicle crime is unsecured property – whether that is valuable items left in sight or doors being left open – that’s why we are running regular patrols to remind people to leave their property secure.“This week’s patrols were co-ordinated across the force area in an attempt to

get a true reflection of the scale of the issue. We are hoping that by drawing at-tention to the problem, we might be able to increase awareness of the steps people can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of car crime, thus reducing thefts.“We have produced some handy flyers with simple steps people can take to

and Christmas story lovers everywhere.Steven, who aims to get children back into reading paperbacks instead of online versions, is hoping to raise £500 from sales of his self-published book The Child Who Saved Christmas for the NSPCC.The book, priced £4.99, is available through Amazon and has already raised over £100 for the children’s charity, but Stephen hopes to reach his target by December.“You only really appreci-ate the cover of a book, if you are holding it in your hands,” said Stephen. “A lot of work goes into the front cover to not only sell the book, but to want to interact with it.”The Christmas story is his first book for charity and Stephen hopes to be able to work with other chari-ties in the future.Each of the characters in the story are based on real people who have been an influence in the author’s life, which, he says, adds a personal touch to the book.The 44-year-old author, who also works as an engi-neering tutor at Darlington College, has already pub-lished two other books: The Whispering Pegasus and A Dream from the Somme and is now on to his next project, a true story about a mountaineering accident.

Children’s half term entertainmentFerryhill Town Council has organised for Animal Story to return to Ferryhill Library on Thursday 29th October from 2pm - 3pm with their ‘Hoots Hallow-een’ session.There are only 35 places available for this session, so parents are encouraged

New teams are being set up to support children, young people and their families across County Durham, in-cluding in Ferryhill.The Families First teams will include social workers, family support workers and other specialist staff who will work alongside staff in the One Point Service and be based at OnePoint Hubs.Durham County Council believes the ten new teams will enable it to best ensure that children and young people have the best chances in life.Carole Payne, Durham County Council’s head of children’s services, said: “We want all children to be

happy, healthy and achieve their full potential so we’ve been looking at how we can do things differently to best support families in the county.“The new Families First teams will mean that workers are based in the community and will have more time to build strong, professional relation-ships with children, young people and families.“They will also have knowl-edge of local organisations that may be able to provide additional help and support if needed.”Parents and young people who are involved with council services have provided their views,

Ferryhill Town Youth’s under 7s, under 8s and under 9s were all celebrat-ing progression in their various cup tournaments last week.The under 7s took on Norton Amber in the League Cup with Ferryhill starting brightly and being rewarded with a goal from a long range effort from Ben Dargue. Norton pulled a goal back but found themselves behind again at the break courtesy of a goal from Jayden Wilkinson. The second half was end to end, but Ferryhill made sure of the win after some good work from Conner Chaytor was finished off well by Zak Lauder and they progress into the last 16 of the competition. In the second game, Fer-ryhill were well beaten, despite some good tackling from Oliver Heaviside and Fin Cooper. Ferryhill’s goal came from a through ball by Cole Phillips, which was put away neatly by Jude Tracey.The under 7s are at home this Sunday, 11th October, when they will entertain Darlington Locomotives.Next up were the Under 8s, who played Middleton Knights at Dean Bank Rec in the Challenge Cup.Ferryhill started brightly with George and Zach sweeping up in defence and breaking forward to assist Aaron and Jamie any chance they could. After some excellent first half football and clinical finishing, Ferryhill went into the break 4-0 ahead.Ferryhill kept the pressure on in the second half and played well throughout.Kole and Carlton came on in the second half to freshen things up and see the game out. Ferryhill deservedly pro-gressed to the next round with a 9-2 victory. Goals came from Aaron F (5), Zach (3) and one for Jamie.Zach was named Man of the Match but Ferryhill’s manager named all players

as his Men of the Match as he couldn’t single anyone out.It was also a quieter day between the posts for Aidan who did his job well.The second game was a much more even contest with a new team fielded for Ferryhill.In an end to end game, Aaron S and Addison worked hard in defence and Lewis was dynamic in midfield. Kole was able to pick the ball up and make his trade-mark runs to burst into the box. The second half saw Sam, Jonathan and Aidan enter the field and also a debut from William helped towards Ferryhill running out 4-3 winners.The highlight of the game was a stunning free kick from Lewis who was also named Man of the Match due to his technique and skill on the ball.“It was two excellent results and more progress for the team. Well done all,” said the manager. Finally, it was the Under 9s turn to progress, but this time only after extra time and nail biting penalty shoot out.Learning from the last game, the team were up for the game from the moment they took to the field. Hemlington played a physical game leading to many well timed challeng-es, but despite this, Ferry-hill were able to cope.Dillion and Dominic were outstanding in defence having to take and make some crucial goal mouth

Richard O’Neill, a promis-ing boxer from Ferryhill, is getting ready for his first professional fight.The fight will be held at the Federation Brewery in Dunston, Gateshead on Saturday 17th October.Richard, 29, from Conyers Terrace, is training reli-giously to a physical de-manding regime on a daily basis.His passion for boxing over-takes all, giving him the determination dedication and will power required to succeed at what he wants to achieve in the sport.Richard works full time at Clancy Docwra and manages to train two hours daily, six days a week.His passion for boxing started as a teenager when he would box in the garage of his mother’s home on a boxing bag and train on weights.He has since trained and boxed with various gyms in the area, Ferryhill Mainsforth being one were he trained on his own before moving on to Newton Acyliffe ABC with Les Gibson and Ian Dunbar where he had various amateur fights, losing just one bout whilst training with the club.Richard then moved to Spennymoor Boxing

Academy in order to gain more experience and better himself, knowing that the club had a good reputation and has produced lots of local talent. As a result, Richard was given the opportunity of travelling to Canada to box with other members of the club and gained the desired experience along the way for which he thanks head coach Robert Ellis, Mickey Thompson, Stuart Macrone and Darren Smails.Richard has now been signed up with Gus Robin-son’s development squad in Hartlepool where he aims, with the support of head coach Peter Cope and trainer Alan Temple, to achieve success in profes-sional boxing.He said, “I am grateful for all support I have received from my family, my partner Sarah Jayne and my friends.” Tickets for the bout are priced at £35 and there will be a bus leaving from Ferryhill Village.Anyone interested in pur-chasing a ticket should contact Richard on 07711 085635 or Tracy Hodgson on 07523 176855.Both can also be contacted online via their Facebook pages.

In one crunching tackle Dillion was left wiped out on the ground badly winded. Unable to continue Kacie came on to support Dominic in defence.With five minutes to go Hemlington scored to level the match taking the game into extra time.Extra time saw neither side gain advantage to finish the game as it progressed to penalties.After four penalties each, both sides held their breath as the ball was placed on the spot. After two great saves by Kieron, it all came down to Rio who stepped up and converted his kick to send the Ferryhill lads through to the next round.“It was an outstanding effort by the whole team,” said the manager.
