WHO WE ARE…STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THEIR BODIES AS SYSTEMS

Can I Get a System (Q1) Central Idea: When people understand their body systems, they’re able to make responsible choices for their personal health and well-being.

Key Concepts: Function: Specific human body system functions and connection between body and mind. Responsibility: Actions and behaviors that keep the body systems and mind healthy. Perspective: Keeping the human body systems healthy and balanced keeps your mind healthy and balanced. Connection: Compare and contrast the old food pyramid with the updated food pyramid and with the international food pyramid. Lines of Inquiry: Understanding various systems of the human body. Choices fostering good physical and emotional health. Strategies for improving or maintaining health. Trans disciplinary Skills: Healthy Lifestyle skills: How to manage a healthy body and support body systems through nutrition, hygiene and exercise. Research projects. Healthy Choices skills: Nutrition and exercise to support body and its systems. Food pyramid, movement breaks, gym Safety skills: Keeping your body safe physically and mentally (substance abuse, chemicals, etc.) and learning about gym/sports safety. Gross and fine motor skills: Knowing your body and how it moves: stages of development and movement breaks in the classroom and gym Organization and Time Management skills: Keeping a healthy mind and executive functioning during personalized learning/menu time. WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME… STUDENTS EXPLORE THE HISTORY OF

INDIGENOUS PEOPLE Indigenous People: Manifest Destiny or Tragedy? (2)

Central Idea: By means of influences and oppression, the lives of indigenous people changed drastically. Key Concepts: Change: Students will see how oppression has not changed over time by reading, listening, viewing, and investigating primary resources about oppression. Causation: Students will investigate the causes of oppression, which will reinforce the meaning of Manifest Destiny. Perspective: There are always different perspectives to issues. Students will be exposed to both and create arguments to support their perspective. Lines of Inquiry: Indigenous people’s beliefs and traditions (perspective) Circumstances that led to the oppression past and present (causation) (change) Creating a just world for all (change) Transdisciplinary Skills: Social Skills:• Accepting responsibility Students really applied this when they learned how Indigenous people were willing to assume a share of the responsibility for their survival Respecting others This skill was discussed and applied during each class discussion the students had about the oppression of women in Afghanistan and Pakistan and Native Americans. Cooperating- Working cooperatively in a group during their “info boards” projects and during their Inquiry Fair projects. Resolving conflict: Students discussed and formed arguments in terms of the settlers not listening to the Indigenous people, how they didn't com-promise and how they could have. and what solutions they could have made in order to be fair to all. What is normal? (Q1) Central Idea: Is your normal, normal?

Key Concepts: Change: Students will understand that our believes can change as a result of experiences. Perspective: Students will learn to suspend judgment about human differences. Responsibility: Students will learn to take a stand for what is right.

Lines of Inquiry: What is normal, what makes you unique? How have your believes changed over time? Our moral compass.

Transdisciplinary Skills: Social Skills: Students will learn that respect for others creates a balanced and positive environment. Accepting responsibility: Students learn that as members of a community everyone is responsible for the social and emotional well-being of others Self-management: Codes of behavior. Students will learn and develop behavior codes that they apply and model throughout the year.

HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES… STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION OF MONEY

Money Talks (Q2) Central Idea: Understanding the value of money can lead to good financial management. Key Concepts: Function: We discussed other forms of exchange before money and why we need money. Form: Discussing and exploring different forms of money at Federal Reserve presentation and through class discussions. Change: We discussed other forms of exchange before money, such as, bartering, trading, etc. Students were also able to see how the U.S. currency has changed over time at the Money Museum. Perspective: Throughout the entire unit most of the discussions led to how important money is to live and sustain a “normal” life. Lines of Inquiry: How forms of exchange have evolved over time around the world. (Form, Change)The importance of having an income. (Perspective) The importance of spending and saving wisely. (Function, Responsibility) Traits that lead to good financial management. (Perspective) Transdisciplinary Skills: Research Skills: Formulating Questions: What it takes to start a successful business and billionaire inquiries Planning: researching and planning a business plan and billionaire presentations notes and plan. Collecting, Recording, Analyzing, and Interpreting Data: researching entrepreneurs/billionaires, economy, financial decisions and planning for business plan. Presenting Findings: final presentation of business plan, financial forum, brochure of business, billionaires projects Communication: Speaking: speaking in first person while presenting their billionaire inquiry fair project.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention (Q3) Central Idea: People invent to solve problems and to improve the quality of life. Key Concepts: Change: Students will see how inventions evolve over time and how society changes after certain inventions have been invented (the impact on society). Causation: Students will investigate the causes or circumstances that led to the creation of important inventions. Connection: Students will discover the connections among inventions and improving upon them. Reflection: Students will learn that invention and innovation is a process of design and without reflection, the process would be incomplete.

Lines of Inquiry: Creators of life changing inventions. Circumstances that led to the development of important inventions The impact of inventions on society.

Transdisciplinary Skills: Research Skills: Formulating Questions: Identifying something one wants or needs to know and asking compelling and relevant questions that can be researched. Observing: Using all the senses to notice relevant details. Planning: Developing a course of action; writing an outline; devising ways of finding out necessary information. Collecting Data: gathering information from a variety of first- and second-hand sources such as maps, surveys, direct observation, books, films, people, museums and ICT. Organizing Data: Sorting and categorizing information; arranging into understandable forms such as narrative descriptions, tables, timelines, graphs and diagrams. Recording Data: Describing and recording observations by drawing, note taking, making charts, tallying, writing statements. Interpreting Data: Drawing conclusions from relationships and patterns that emerge from organized data. Presenting Findings: Effectively communicating what has been learned; choosing appropriate media. Water the Element of Life (Q3)(Q4) Central Idea: Life depends on water Key Concepts: Connection: Students will investigate water maps and geographical availability of water from around the world. Function : Students will learn location of large bodies of waters, problems and causes and effect of potable water. Responsibility: Students learn that it is everyone's responsibility to conserve water. Lines of Inquiry: What is water and where does it come from? The distribution and availability of usable water. Our responsibility for water conservation and quality

Transdisciplinary Skills: Thinking Skills: Acquisition of knowledge: Students realize the challenges of limited resources such as water. Gathering Data: Students will use data about water to understand its scarcity Communication Skills: Students will communicate their knowledge about water through various forms of presenting information.
