How do you think Paul felt? What were the consequences of Paul’s choice? What choices have you had to make recently, how did you choose and what were the consequences? What did this mean and what would you do if you were in the story? Make a chart to decide good and bad choices in the story and the consequence. Then using this chart go over decisions you have to make in class, at school and at home and think about things with good and bad consequences and then brainstorm feelings and beliefs that affect each actions either before or after

RE Task – week 1

Explore - Choices have consequences Share an experience of your own about making a choice – ensure it has

two choices, a choice is made and the consequence for the person who chooses and for others

Following this share Tom and Jane story and also read the Balaclava story

Questions – Tom and Jane: What do the words choice and consequence mean? What choices can you find in the story? What two choices did Mum give Paul? What do you think Paul said to his Mum? How do you think Jane felt when she heard what Tom said, and what

Andrew said? How do you think Paul felt? What were the consequences of Paul’s choice? What choices have you had to make recently, how did you choose and

what were the consequences? (Perhaps give some examples of class choices.)

Task: Discuss the feelings of various people in the story and the choices they had to make – what were the consequences of the choices in the story.

Or you can choose to focus on the Balaclava story. Answer the following questions:What choices can you find in the story? What choices did the main character have? How do you think the main character felt when his Mum gave him the new balaclava? What were the consequences of the main characters choices? Think about a choice that is made and the feeling. Example: The boy kept hidden that he stole the Balaclava. He might have felt worried that everyone would find out.The boy made a choice to flush the Balaclava down the toilet. If mum had found out, she would have felt very angry that she’d wasted her money and perhaps hurt. When Tony said that he would like to but he couldn’t. He might have felt sorry that he couldn’t play with his friends. Mum chose to buy the Balaclava. Mum was a bit fed up of the boys nagging and maybe felt a big guilt that he couldn’t in with his friends. The boy chose to steal the Balaclava. He was disappointed with himself and instantly regretted it. He felt guilty. The balaclava boys chose not to let their friend join in. This made the boy feel sad, lonely and isolated. When God was teaching the people, and trying to help them, Jesus told this story about two sons who made choices. Choices always have consequences – read Matthew 21: 28-31. Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vbaawet9Yo

Explain context of story – the chief priests and teacher in the temple were questioning Jesus on his authority

Key questions: First son

o What did he choose to answer first?o Why do you think he chose as he did? How do you think he felt?o Can you think of some of the consequences of his choice? o Can you think of reasons why he changed his mind? How did he

feel?o Do you think that was easy? Give reasons.o Have you ever done something like this? When? Why?

Second son o What did the second son choose?o Why do you think he changed his mind? o How do you think he felt?o Have you ever done something like this? When? Why?o How do you think the father felt about his two sons?

Task: Easier challenge: Retell the story and discuss what is happening

in each picture/stage of the story. Think about what might be said. See my example and the picture templates I have also uploaded

More of a challenge: write a letter to our parish community based on what Jesus said in the story, making links between what they’ve heard and how that might help a Christian make choices. See my example if you can begin to add scripture.

Example – easier challenge:

1. There is man who works in a vineyard and where the grapes are ready to pick. The man has two sons.

2. He asks the first son to pick grapes. Please help me. No I’m busy

3. The son is sorry and goes to pick the grapes.

4. He asks the second son to help him pick the grapes. Please help meYes I will

5. The son forgets and does not pick the grapes

6. The father and the first son work together to pick the grapes and the second son never appeared

We learn that our actions are better than the words you say.

What could you do?How was we use this example in our lives? More of a challenge:

Dear Friends in Christ,

You’ll never believe what story I heard in school today. The story was about a Father and Two sons who had a vine yard. The father was picking grapes from the vine yard when he asked his two sons to help. The first responded “I don’t want to go.” but later he changed his mind and came back to help. The second answered “Yes sir.” but he never went. So the first son and father picked the grapes together.

I think the first son did the right thing because he did say “No!” but later he was sorry and went to help his Dad. I think the second son wasn’t good because he kind of lied to his Dad and for him to be sorry he must prove himself in his actions by not doing it again.

We have to remember our actions as Christians are better than what we just say as Matthew 21:28-32 talks about in his parable and when Jesus shared in his message. If we do this then we will be treated like we want to be. The Father in the story is like God and the two sons are like us because we can make bad and good choices, but even when do something wrong God forgives us then like the Father forgave his second son as his actions later on repaid for what he did wrong and he didn’t do it again.

We can show this by saying sorry when we have done something wrong like hurting a friend, but we must show we’re sorry for wrong choices by not doing it again as James 1:22 shows as this proves to God we have learnt from our mistake and we can now make the right choices rather than just saying it.

Structure 1. Retell the parable 2. Say what the first son did well3. Say what the second son did wrong 4. What did this show for our actions as Christians 5. Give an example of something you could do and link to scripture

Scripture 1 John 3:18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth Actions speak louder
