This week, we’re going to explore one of my favourite Ancient Greek myths: the story of Perseus and Medusa!

To hear the story, please click on the following link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/ks2-primary-history-ancient-greece-perseus-and-the-gorgon-medusa/zfr6qp3.

At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to Akrisios, a grumpy and vicious old man. He is desperate to know when he will die, so he visits the mysterious Oracle. The Oracle would often puzzle and infuriate her visitors by speaking in riddles.

Today, I would like you to answer Akrisios’ question with your own riddle.

Follow these links for information to support today’s learning:

https://www.poetry4kids.com/news/writing-riddles/.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4mmn39/articles/z84p97h.

Despite Akrisios’ best attempt to get rid of Perseus and his mother, fortunately, they survived! Eventually, they end up on the Isle of Seriphos, at the hands of the gluttonous King Polydectes. King Polydectes falls in love with Perseus’ mother, Danae and wants to marry her. Sadly, Danae doesn’t feel the same way.

You’ll quickly realise that the Ancient Greek myths are full of horrid, unsavoury characters! King Polydectes was no exception! He refused to leave Danae alone and persistently bullied her son, Perseus. He was an enormous, greasy, rotund and smelly, old king.

Today, I would like you to use your BEST repulsive adjectives to terrify and disgust your reader. I would like you to describe the malevolent king!

For support with this task, I would like you to read some of Roald Dahl’s fantastically vile character descriptions and magpie some vocabulary (particularly of Aunt Spiker, Aunt Sponge, Mr and Mrs Twit and Mrs Trunchball):

https://www.roalddahl.com/roald-dahl/characters/grown-ups.

As Perseus grows older, he becomes a tall, handsome and athletic young man. He finally decides to confront the horrid King Polydectes about the cruel treatment of his mother. During this fateful meeting, Perseus is given an impossible challenge! He is asked to retrieve the head of the gorgon, Medusa!

This morning, I would like you to retell the events of this daring confrontation. I would like you to write the dialogue that unfolds between Perseus and King Polydectes.

Despairing and unsure what to do, Perseus prays to Hermes, one of the Ancient Greek gods. Who is Hermes? He’s not as powerful as Zeus and he’s not as sinister as Hades. What do you know about him?

Today, I would like you to write a non-chronological report about the Ancient Greek gods. You’ll need to include a title, an introduction and subheadings.

Perhaps, you could write about their appearances, their special powers, their friends and families, and how the Ancient Greeks worshipped them.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/znc26v4.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z87tn39/articles/zgt7mp3.

To complete his quest, Perseus will need to visit the Three Grey Sisters, a terrifying group of wretched, wrinkly, old women, who share only one eye between them. They live in a huge, dark cave next to the roaring sea. When he approaches them, he can hear their terrible bickering:

“Where is the eye?”“It’s there!”“Listen! Perseus and Hermes are here! They’re coming!”“Who cares? Why should we help them with their mission?”

Did you notice the homophone used? Their, there and they’re.

Today, I would like you to revise how to use these three homophones, by completing the activities on BBC Bitesize.

ctsR.E. –Pentecost

Yesterday, the Church celebrated Pentecost Sunday. On this day, we remember how the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and filled with them knowledge, wisdom and strength. Immediately, they went out and began to proclaim God’s word in a multitude of different languages.

Today, I would like you to write a newspaper article about this incredible and significant event in the Church’s history.

Science –Properties of Sound

If a tree falls when no one is around, does it still make a sound? Today, I would like you to investigate the answer to this question How far away can a sound be heard?

To complete this investigation, you will need a musical instrument or an audio device. Ask a family member to play the instrument/device and then rate the volume of the sound as you progressively step further and further away from it.

Remember to ensure this is a fair test! What will you keep the same? What will be your only variable?

Topic -Ancient Greek Food

What food did the Ancient Greeks like to eat? Did they have a balanced diet? Did they eat the same food as we do today? What did they enjoy snacking on?

This afternoon, I would like you to research the food of the Ancient Greeks. Once you have completed your research, I would like you to create a menu for an Ancient Greek restaurant.

What will be your starters? Do you have a good idea for the main course? Perhaps you could find out what currency the Ancient Greeks used and write your prices accordingly! Don’t forget to make your menu as eye-catching and persuasive as possible!

R.E. –The Road to Damascus

During the time of Jesus, Saul of Tarsus was a very unkind man. He persecuted Christians for believing that Jesus was the Messiah. He laughed at the idea of Jesus’ resurrection. He even happily encouraged the flogging of Jesus’ followers!

Saul remained a very stubborn non-believer until one fateful journey into Damascus. During this journey, a blinding apparition caused him to fall from his horse. Jesus appeared before him and encouraged him to change his ways. Shocked and shaken, Saul immediately began to transform his life. Soon, he met up with Jesus’ original Apostles, changed his name to Paul and then worked towards becoming the greatest Christian missionary to have ever lived!

Today, I would like you to imagine you are St Paul and write a diary entry about this momentous day in his life.

Please follow this link for scripture to support this activity:https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?

Topic -Ancient Greek Theatre

Did you know that the Ancient Greeks invented theatre? Every city in Ancient Greece would have had a theatre! During Ancient times, however, the theatre was very different. Mostly, theatres were only used during religious festivals, to tell the stories of the various Ancient Greek gods. All of the actors on stage were male, even those playing female parts. Each of the actors would also have worn a mask.

Today, I would like you to create your very own Ancient Greek theatre mask! Will it be for a comedy, tragedy or satire? Will it be a mask fit for the Ancient Greek gods?

Please follow this link for information to support today’s learning:http://www.teachinghistory100.org/objects/about_the_object/greek_theatre_mask.
